Say, even if you're only familiar with Gen 1, what Pokémon do you think the Animorphs would want to acquire if they could?

Marco: Would get a Magikarp, train it up well past level 20, and refuse to let it evolve. Would pull out this Magikarp every battle, and contentedly lose every battle, for the sheer joy of fucking with his opponents.

Cassie: Would become way too attached to her starter Bulbasaur, keeping her Venusaur on even well after its effectiveness had peaked. Would be offended at the mere suggestion of ever storing Zack (the Venusaur's name is Zack) in the PC, because they've been together so long.

Tobias: Would meticulously fill his entire Pokédex, indeed catching them all, including a month spent just acquiring an Abra. Would carefully evolve all of his Pokémon to their final forms, rotating evenly between them so none would feel left out. Would only ever win gym battles when required to do so in order to find more areas to get more Pokémon.

Rachel: Would build her Tauros-Jynx-Jolteon-Dodrio dream team, and would go around annihilating gym leaders. Has a slight problem with min-maxing, and gets defeated every time she forgets defensive attacks exist, but the battles are their own reward.

Ax: Would have no idea the game exists, but instead be an obsessive card collector. Somehow, from the four castoff cards Tobias gave him (a Ninetails and three Cubones), Ax has traded his way into a small fortune of Charizards, Alakazams, and Gyradoses. And so many Chanseys. Over 30 holographic Chanseys, and counting. He especially likes the sparkly cards, which is why all of his cards have sparkly backgrounds. Ax insists these were all legal trades, agreed to by all parties. Marco's pretty sure he should give up yeerk-fighting and go trade on Wall Street.

Jake: Would make a big show of not caring about pocket monster games — hello, there's a war on! Would have exactly one pack of 10 cards he keeps in the back of his desk. There's nothing special in there, unless you count Togepi. It's just that it was a gift from Tom.

hey so what's the animorphs college au?

Right, so, I actually wrote the first chapter and put it on AO3 (PSA: the first chapter is basically just smut?  like, there will be more other stuff but the story is basically structured around a fuckbuddies-to-dating plotline, so: smut), but here is some of the behind-the-scenes of the Animorphs college AU.

So, I started reading @lathori the Animorphs books because we’re domestic like that and after two books she stared at me and went “There’d better be happy AU fic or I’m gonna kill you.”  And…um, there’s actually not a lot of happy AU fic for these books because we’re all fucking sadists, s/o to my fellow fucking sadists.  So in order to preserve my best friend’s sanity as well as my own life (um…she knows where I sleep, y’all), I agreed on a few happy AU’s to write for her.  The D&D AU and the College AU were the first two, and she wants me to write the Morph Dancer AU as well.

But the actual premise of the college AU is based around the idea that Rachel and her cousin Jake and her recently acquired best friend Cassie and his recently acquired best friend Marco all get assigned to a house living arrangement with two complete strangers.  (If this sounds absurd, let me assure you that this happened in my school, except only two of the people knew each other.)  The night before they move into their new housing assignment, the lot of them go to a party, where Rachel hooks up with the cute quiet guy from her Shakespeare class the previous semester.

Imagine her alarm when he shows up at the house the next morning with his Very Weird friend (Ax makes a weird human in any universe okay) with his one (1) bag of possessions plus a box of books.

The ensuing plot mostly revolves around Rachel and Tobias pretending not to have feelings about sleeping together while they try to leverage Jake and Cassie into so much as holding hands instead of nervously tiptoeing around each other the whole time.  Also, it includes Jake laying down some House Rules, such as #2: All house residents must be wearing AT LEAST pants and/or a shirt at all times in all public areas, as well as all pertinent underwear.  And also #5: No drinking on school nights in the house.  And also #8: Thou shalt not risk getting arrested for illegal purchase of alcohol when Ax’s adult brother is LITERALLY an hour away and willing to buy the stuff legally.

All I really have worked out for this is some general backstory and people’s majors, I haven’t even gotten through the second chapter, despite my best efforts.

Rachel and Jake intentionally went to the same college Anywhere But Home because Tom just got out of a cult and it was making life a little stressful with their parents hovering anxiously at all times.  Rachel switched from gymnastics to krav maga, jiu jitsu, and kickboxing when she was thirteen and is majoring in kinesiology so that she can open her own self-defense studio.  Jake is a history major and Rachel considers it her sacred duty to make sure he has a life outside of the library and the gym, which is how he meets Cassie, Rachel’s new best friend, and almost swallows his tongue.  Cassie is on the pre-med track so that she can become a vet, and fills all of her additional credit openings with ecology classes because she’s like that.  Marco is kind of idly majoring in comp sci because it’s what his dad does and he doesn’t have a really heavy interest in anything else, but at the end of his sophomore year he declares a poli sci major out of the fucking blue and crams his schedule to finish on time.  Tobias is an English major who wants to be a teacher, and also he has a minor in studio drawing and a fascination with birds.  And of course there’s Ax who, for some perverse reason, really genuinely loves physics and comp sci and manages to major in both at once through sheer enthusiasm.  And Elfangor is alive and kind of thrilled that his baby brother has Real Friends, and he comes over and hangs out at the house sometimes and is much beloved by all of them, not least because he provides them with advance copies of video games sometimes and also bought the house PlayStation.

Just found out that Rachel and Melissa quit Gymnastic and start playing Badminton as women doubles.

Tobias went from being a bully magnet who spent a non-zero amount of time with his head in a toilet to being someone who forces ““god”” to stop what they’re doing to negotiate salary with him in just a matter of months. There were a lot of life changes that happened during that time that made him more confident, but I think we can all agree that one factor was the most significant: he got a hot girlfriend.

For me, it's probably Marco. He has a bigger chance than others. I love being around people who know to tell a good joke and make a lot of sarcastic comments about life. Then Cassie. I don't know but usually, I befriend with a good person who is too good for his/her surrounding. Maybe I am fed up with him/her behavior, but I will respect him/her for what he/she do.

If I ever see Tobias' drawing, maybe I will admire him. I like the person who can draw and read a good book/story.

If I have a good amount of self-confident maybe I can befriend with Rachel and become a partner in crime, who will do whatever we wanna do.

Which Animorph(s) would you have been friends with if you went to their school? Realistic answers only, you don't know about the war and the Yeerk in your head doesn't suspect them of being the Andalite Bandits. (If you don't have a Yeerk then you wouldn't know about the Andalite Bandits anyways, would you?)

I think Tobias would have been the one I would share the most interests with at school. But then he just disappeared one day and I wouldn't have anyone to lab partner with in biology.

For Tobias Santorelli, I think that's because there's a fic that makes them as father and son (Santorelli was the man that Loren married, sent from the future). Ellimist's works.

And btw, Elfangor - Arbron would be good/best bromance ever! They'll be perfect for each other.

Let’s see more Ax ships that aren’t with Marco. LET’S HAVE SHIPPING VARIETY IN GENERAL IN THE ANIMORPHS FANDOM.  Let’s fucking ship Elfangor with Aldrea or Jake with sleep.

b. Who would have been an awesome second choice for POV character?

Ax feels like the obvious choice here, but I’m gonna go with Rachel. I’ve talked before about how the dance in the beginning of 33 is really important for her arc, and one of the things I love about Rachel/Tobias is how much we learn about her in his books. This is really no exception. She’s having a major reckoning with herself, coming to terms with who she is after the events of 22-27-32, and so I’d love to see inside her head, you know?

o. Favorite new piece of info you learned in this book?

the Utzum!!!! the Utzum, because holy shit, Tobias seeing Elfangor? Tobias being accepted as an Andalite warrior?! just kill me now. just take my heart, it’s only flesh. also it lends so much depth to their culture, their spirituality? we see the Andalites apart from war here - optimistic, confident, loving, kind people. I love it.

q. Could any scene be improved by letting one of the characters curse? Which curse word?

LET TOBIAS SAY FUCK I mean. Actually I really want Rachel to call Taylor a bitch. She needs to. I don’t care when but I just need that to happen.

y. What, if anything, do you think would have been different if this had been written by KAA?

This is one of the few ghostwritten books where I can’t see really any places where things can be easily improved. No one’s OOC, there’s not clunky writing. A lot of the ghostwritten books have bad emotional flow when compared to ones written by Applegrant but that’s really not a problem here.

If I were being super picky? I’d say that I’d want to see a bit more time with Tobias learning to be an Andalite - that scene feels short, but as the tagline says I’m a known Andalite stan so of course I’d say that.

But she's not that kind of person. She's the type of "the world can burn, but not my dearest friend!"

She will protect them for whatever the cost, she always throwing herself into danger for saving them, whatever the consequences were. She almost call 911 when Cassie collapsed at book #4 because she priority her best friend life (she can deal with the controller later after she's sure that Cassie was safe). She tells Tobias to leave the mission if that thing is dangerous for him (anything as long he's safe) at book #33. She does everything she's afraid the most, as long as her friends no need to face the horror at book #27 (and almost every time). So... yes, she was the gung ho warrior who will do anything for the war except sacrifice her dearest friend.

Everyone loves Rachel: even the two "God" was fight each other just to get her at their side

Tobias' the badass hybrid species ever, and that's why we love him that much: who else can curse to the god and said he was baloney and lunatic directly

Only the bad will love Jake: not like the other two (who have much love from Ellimist so he greet them personally), only Crayak and Drode who reach him personally
