Tobias Larkspur character interview

Helloo!! I'm currently writing my first novel and want to document my process. I just did some of a character interview to get to know one of my main characters better. His name is Tobias Larkspur, he's a young prince who has to fight to regain his throne.

1. What is your name?

He smiles broadly, straightening his shoulders. “Tobias Larkspur.” He answers confidently. His accent is trimmed and precise, years of private lessons shining through.

2. Do you have any nicknames? If you do, who gave it to you and why?

He looks almost wistful as he ponders the question. “Toby, by my sister Freya. Larkspur, by Thomas. Ass by Felix.” The last comment causes the corners of his mouth to twitch slightly.

3. How old are you now?

“19.” 

4. When were you born?

5. Where do you call home now?

A sorrowful look enters his grass green eyes. He looks down at his hands and twists his fingers together. “I used to live in the palace. Now I do not really have a home.”

6. To what social class do you belong?

He twists the ring on his left pinky. “I am the rightful heir to the throne of Cindralis.”

7. What is your eye color?

“Green.”

8. What is your hair color?

“Blonde.”

9. Do you have any distinguishing facial features?

He appears to ponder this question. “I have a lot of freckles across my nose, if that counts.” He says. 

10. Do you have any birthmarks? Where are they?

“Just a small mole on my left hip.” 

11. Do you have any scars? How did you get them?

A hardened look enters his eyes. “Just one.” He lifts the hem of his pants, revealing a healed laceration that stretches from his knee to the ball of his ankle. “Sparring incident.” He says.

12. Do you have any tattoos or other markings? How and why did you get them?

“I have a tattoo on my back. It spreads from my neck to the small of my back, and across to reach both shoulder blades. It is meant to look like wind.” He turns and lifts the back of his shirt, revealing a swirling tattoo that is done in such a pale blue ink, it almost blends in completely with his skin. 

13. Do you have any allergies, diseases, or other physical weaknesses?

“No, thankfully.”

14. Are you right or left handed?

“Left.”

15. What does your voice sound like?

He puzzles over this question for a moment. “It’s deep, and warm. It cracks when I get upset.” He laughs nervously at the admission. 

16. How do you dress most of the time?

“Usually in palace attire, but as of late, lots of leather and armour.”

17. How do you dress up?

“If I am honest, my clothes are usually chosen for me by my valet, Lucius.”

18. How do you dress down?

“I don't often dress down, but if I were to, I would wear a comfortable white blouse and black slacks.” He smiles. 

19. What do you wear when you go to sleep?

He blushes. 

20. Do you wear any jewelry?

He flexes his left hand, which is adorned with various gold rings, each marked with a different gem. “I love gold.” He admits, his hand absentmindedly passing over the silver necklace hanging from his neck. I gesture towards it. He blinks, blush creeping into his cheeks. “This is an exception.”

21. What words and/or phrases do you use frequently?

“I don’t think I have any.”

22. Do you have any quirks, strange mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics?

“I love herbal medicine, but Charlotte says that none of my medicinal poultices are proven to work. They do work though, every time.” He fiddles with his rings. “I suppose one of my annoying habits is my inability to do what I’m told.”

23. Do you have any bad habits? If so, what are they and how do you plan to get rid of them?

“Biting my nails.” He rubs a finger over his thumb nail, the skin beside the nail raw and red. 

24. Do you have a lifelong dream or aspiration?

“To return to my kingdom.” His voice softens at this comment.

25. Do you own a car (or other form of transportation)? Why or why not? Describe it.

“What is a car? I travel by horse and carriage.” He glances at his boots, which are covered in mud. “I haven’t had that luxury in a while.”

26. What is your current state of mind?

“I am determined to win back my throne. There is nothing else on my mind but dethroning Aurelius.”
