Career Assistance
Career Assistance
Hi as you all know I am passionate about working with people to find employment as my many posts on the subject suggest. I want to focus more on helping people in this area and have repackaged my service offering so that it focuses more on discussions and making people aware of the fact that you are looking for work
With that in mind, my amended  service offering is
1) Linked in posting written on your behalf  - This is free
2) Discussions around your career You can either take the services separately or as a package of 3 sessions including Linked in Posting
3) Resume and Linked in a Profile review
What makes me different to anyone else offering these services? simple I have seen this process on both sides of the fence. Not only am I a Senior international HR Practitioner of many years experience I am a guy who was laid off.   I have personally been through the crap associated with the modern hiring system.  Everything from the wall of silence through to discrimination and I have also set up my own business so I can relate at all levels to what people are going through.  If you want help please pm me or call +97338342852. An initial consultation is absolutely free

On Social Media, letting people be and accepting them for who they are
I must admit that the more I work within the framework of social media I realize what a complicated beast it actually is. Consider the following
It must be constantly fed - My son who is 18 and I often joke about this and call social media Audrey after the big green plant in the movie Little Shop of Horrors that is always saying feed me
To achieve ABC on Social Media you have to do XYZ. One of the keys to success in getting a job is not your ability in the role but the content that you produce . One does not necessarily follow from the other
While hits on posts and likes may be some indication of interest they are not of themselves sales
All in all the introduction of social media has given great benefits in terms of our capacity to reach out to an instant global audience. One of the major benefits that I can see, when you look at the issue of Social Media generally is the opportunity to maintain contact with people and indeed renew contact with those who had gone from our lives for a period of time. The fact that I am writing this article on Linked in should be evidenced enough of the importance I place on it.
This brings me to the main point of this article. I have been going through a very rough period in my life these last few months. Probably the worst period that I can recall I decided to be honest and upfront about it. I was advised before I did it not to do it because it would send out a negative message and that people only want to hear positive things on social media. I thought about this and decided to go ahead anyway because in my view social media needs to be about life, not bread and circuses and for all of us life goes up and down and not in a straight line. I have also been a person who believes in the saying " speak only of me as you find". The response that I have received has been overwhelmingly positive.
So how does this play out for people in the job market? Simply those involved in the hiring process need to check the unconscious bias in at the door. If you are interviewing someone who might be going through a rough patch in their personal life then it won't last, these are temporary periods for people and the perfect candidate for the role may be sitting right in front of you.

The Beat goes On
This, of course, was the title of a great Sonny and Cher song but despite statistics coming out about record low levels of unemployment, particularly in the USA  the time taken to find a job is still too high so as Sonny and Cher put it the beat is going on.
According to the website, https://www.thebalancecareers.com  in 2018 experts have estimated it would take very, very roughly one month to find a job for every $10,000 of the paycheck you would like to earn. So, in theory, if you were looking to earn $60,000 a year, your job search could take six months which means that there are different factors in play
Tumblr media
Contrast this to 2005.  According to the Office of Publications & Special Studies Issues in Labor Statistics | Summary 11-01 | May 2011  47.3% of those unemployed in the USA found jobs in less than 5 weeks
The influences of technological change and the era of mergers acquisitions and restructuring that we live in can be seen
As can flawed recruitment processes
Maybe then getting a job may catch up to the Labor Market
The beat goes on

To Freelance or not to Freelance That is the Question
The challenges of the current job market are well documented. Lengthy and time consuming recruitment processes , communication issues and technology are amongst the many challenges that a candidate faces and stories of long periods of unemployment, unnecessary periods abound on social media as we adjust to this period of great upheaval in the workforce with a process which has gotten worse from the candidates perspective despite the introduction of  technological change. These challenges are further amplified for the older worker where despite the knowledge and experience you have built up, the assumption is made by some that you are no longer capable of adding value or contributing to society once you hit the age of 50 and the age where you are effectively barred from the employed workforce will only get younger as time goes on.
Human nature being what it is we revert to familiar behavior in times of adversity so we apply for new positions within the context of the contract of employment because this is what we are used to and we are comforted that, with the statutory and contractual entitlements that we get that we will be looked after and we will be able to provide for our families and also build our futures with savings and related activity.
The sad reality is that this mode of employment is dying as costs are driven down to the lowest common denominator  by companies and people are using savings to survive because they have no choice.  Again this has been very well documented and while the absolute necessity of it all may be questioned it is occurring, it is what it is and we have to do our best to come up with alternate strategies to carve out our own place in this brave new world .  It is known as the gig economy or uberisation of the workforce.
So we need to think outside the box and say rather that I need a full time job start to think within the framework of "what income do I need and what is the best way to secure it"  If for example you needed an income of say $100,000 and you get that in a full time job you are back to zero if you get laid off.  If you have four clients bringing you $100,000 USD income and you lose one client you still have income from the other three so you are doing a better job at mitigating the risk.
I know that to have your own business or act as a freelancer is not easy and may not have been on your agenda.  From my own point of view it has been  a major learning experience as I try to build brand awareness, get clients and form what I hope will be long term, income producing partnerships. There are websites  for freelancers such as upwork  (www.upwork.com)  which I use to bid for work.   It is a competitive market and you don't get every job that you submit a proposal for but people do have conversations with you.  I have personally found some good opportunities via Upwork which forms part of my business but is not my complete service offering.
We need to think outside the square in this brave new world and accept that the contract of employment and the control test, which have regulated employment so well for so long are diminishing and the gig economy is on the rise.   We all need to survive and prosper so we need all options on the table .  The bottom line is that the only person that you can trust you can secure your future and your families future is you and it is not going to get any better as the march of technological change continues.  When like me you have committed the terrible crime  of being over the age of 50 it becomes the only game in town unless the law dealing with  issues surrounding discrimination is strengthened.
I would be happy to offer my services in a coaching capacity to assist people wrestling with these questions.  Please e-mail me on [email protected] or call +97338342852 mobile/whats app
