Okay, as someone who is obsessive about shotguns, ballistically and mechanically, these are my personal top 10 shotguns for defensive use:
10. Benelli M4.
9. Winchester SPX.
8. Benelli M2.
7. Beretta 1301.
6. Mossberg 930.
5. Benelli supernova.
4. Mossberg 500.
3. Remington 870.
2. Mossberg 590A1.

You might look at this and go: what the hell, why is such venerable shotguns like the Benelli in M4 dead last?
Well, I included things like how much each gun costs into the factor of where they go. You'll also notice number one is a Maverick 88.
For the price of a legitimate Benelli M4 shotgun, you can purchase a Maverick 88, and take a few tactical shotgun courses. A man with a $260 pump action and a few classes under his belt will stomp the guts out of someone who paid around $2500 and took no classes.
