"Gabe, it's been a week and I can't even recognize your room. You're miserable." Mick stood in front of his roommate to emphasize his words, blocking Gabe's view of the video game he was trying to play.
"Move."
Gabe's voice was rough, from isolation and refusing to speak, and from far too many cigarettes. Not only was his bedroom hard to see through all the piles of laundry and trash, but it stunk like tar and nicotine too.
Mick stood his ground.
"Move."
Gabriel didn't wait long to speak again, ad his words flowed out of him like an unstoppable wave.
"I can't let anything like this happen again. People can't get close to me. I'll never be with anyone forever. I can't. I can't."
The young man's voice cracked and he quieted. In the dim light, Mick saw the glint of tears in his roommates eyes. Gabe's hands shook, still gripping his game controller. At last he lifted his head and met eyes with his friend and repeated;
"So chill out?"
“Chill out, my dude, we’re all going to die alone.”

comfort sentence starters.
“ there, there, it’s okay, don’t cry. ” “ shhh, it’s okay now, i’m here. ” “ don’t cry, everything will work out. ” “ please don’t cry, i’m so sorry. ” “ i will always be here for you. never forget that. ” “ don’t you ever forget that i am always here. ” “ if you ever feel alone, don’t, because i am right here. ” “ i’m going to be here for you through it all. ” “ are you okay? do you need a hug? ” “ come here, give me a hug, it’s going to be okay. ” “ i will always offer you my shoulder to cry on. ” “ don’t let anyone break you down, rise up from their antics. ” “ you deserve so much better, you are a beautiful being. ” “ stop looking for a reason to die, look for one to live for. ” “ you never have to be alone again, i promise. ” “ please don’t make a promise you can’t keep. ” “ hey, what are friends for, huh? ” “ have i ever not been there for you? ” “ i will hold your hand through it all. ” “ never let anyone bring you down dear. ” “ oh, you can’t let them win, stop that. ” “ well, now, what is crying going to do about it? ” “ you finish crying and stand up and come back ten times harder. ” “ you can always forgive, but never forget. ” “ it sucks, i know, but time heals all pain. ” “ you shouldn’t let them get you down. ” “ you are such a strong person, you can beat this. ” “ you will come out on top, standing strong. ” “ you can’t break someone who is already broken. ” “ you will survive this because you were built for it. ” “ it seems rough right now, but just wait, better days do come. ” “ sometimes you just have to let go and let god. ” “ show them what you’re made of, screw them. ” “ when denied, work harder and serve justice. ” “ you are worthy of so much more, i promise you. ” “ you’re not all bad so stop acting like it. ”

Prom wasn't something Gabe ever really knew about growing up. When you're homeschooled and hidden away from generally every other kid in the world, that made sense to him. Joining a public high school in the 9th grade had been a whirlwind of anxiety. At least by his final year of high school Gabe had learned to keep his head down and his mouth shut.
By now, everyone knew him as the "germophobic freak". It was easier than explaining to anyone that he had to wear gloves and a mask for a totally different reason.
But tonight was senior prom, so he pushed all of his unpleasant high school issues aside. Tonight was all about him and Jason. Perfect, patient, gentle Jason.
Gabriel took in his reflection one more time before putting on his medical mask and black cloth gloves. He took a deep breath and got out of his car.
Tonight would be a night to remember.
He straightened his tie before smiling at himself in the mirror. The suit fit perfectly. His boyfriend was going to love it.

Although Gabe was shocked to have encountered another powered person who was so open about their powers, he remained cautious, and stayed professional behind his mask. Do your job. Don't freak out.
"I can clear your plate away, miss, it won't be a problem," calm down, keep that voice level. He picked up her plate and glass without waiting for a response. He felt the woman's gaze fall to his gloved hands; a familiar occurence for those who meet Gabe at first.
"It's not your fault your mother died."
The mindreader's words blasted through Gabriel's walls like a cannonball. She hadn't opened her mouth, he realized. She was talking inside his head. Gabe staggered, and the tray of dirty dishes slipped from his grasp. The sound of china and glass shattering got the attention of everyone in the restaurant, including the manager.
I'm not the only one.
Shocked, Gabe spoke through gritted teeth.
"Outside. Now."
His wild eyes only met the woman's gaze for a moment before he sped out of the diner, head down. He leaned heavily against the brick wall of the adjacent building.
I'm not the only one.
Gabe almost laughed.
Maybe she can help me.

“I’m a mindreader.”
“Are you going to–”
“Read your mind? Yes, I am.”
“I was gonna say, are you gonna finish that food?”
