Robotics Trends in the Industry you must know - Towards Robotics
New Trends in Robotics and Controller Design
Industrial robots can not perform their application tasks without a controller. Controllers provide software that gives robots the knowledge to perform complex tasks and provides the robot with a way to communicate with the physical world. Developments in the device design promote collaborative robotics, where robots will be able to operate in close contact with humans. The proposed amendments to the robot safety standards guidelines for ANSI / RIA R15.06 reflect the movement towards collaborative robotics and require “robotification” by incorporating robotics in new applications.
I see a trend towards the robot controller is more of a controller of the whole manufacturing process. With increased processing power, integrators can add more items into the robot controller,” said Erik Carrier, Product Engineering Manager with Kawasaki Robotic (USA) Inc. (Wixom, Michigan).” Traditionally, a robot had one function or one program. Now, administrators can run multiple applications at the same time. ” “Integration enables robots to operate more easily, faster to meet the increasing demand for automation, and contributes to a further reduction in the cost of robotic systems compared to automated system processes.”
Dinsmoor sees this trend continuing. “We see this trend accelerating with a growing focus on robot software ease of use, increasing the robot’s ability to perform functions normally performed by external devices. We also see the daybreak of learning robots. These machines learn from experience in executing an application to optimize their performance so that production becomes faster, more accurate, and more flexible.”
So, in short, what all these experts from the industry are saying is that: Advancement in controllers will make the integration of robots to work together a lot easier. The ease in the integration will make the application of robots easier, resulting in more robust automation, also decreasing the cost of applying these automation solutions. In the future, the software used to control robots will become more comfortable to use, increasing robots’ ability to perform most of the functions usually performed by external devices.
More Power, Less Package
Controllers were downsized, a trend which robotics industry players expect to continue. “The controllers’ size is getting smaller, and in the next five years, I hope to see more of that trend. As with other electronic devices, due to consolidation, robot controllers will have fewer components inside, “said Joseph Campbell, Vice President, ABB Inc.’s (Auburn Hills, Michigan) Robot Products Group. “End-users can now mount or embed smaller controllers above a robot. They keep the footprint small and flexible, giving integration options where the controller is to be located. Campbell says. Likewise, James Shimano, Product Manager at Precise Automation Inc. (San Jose, California), predicts the continued shrinkage of robot controllers. “I see a continuous drive to shrink the controllers. In the past, the controller cabinets were large, bulky, and unwieldy that the robot needed to be harnessed. System integrators are required to find a place for the controller and its harnesses while keeping them safe too. Controller placement can be a problem in an industrial factory where large and hazardous objects are moving around. For the successful “robotification” of research laboratories and life science installations, Shimano notes smaller controllers are essential. “The trend towards smaller tabletop controllers and robots in pharmaceuticals, life sciences, labs, solar panel assembly, and semiconductors has grown in the last three years. In both their computing sections, integrated controllers are smaller, containing the processor and memory and the amplifiers. “Incorporating the amplifier and the controls into a tiny package inside the robot structure eliminates some extra cabinets while making controllers more compact, a necessity for tabletop robotics in the laboratory,” Shimano concludes. Miniaturization makes robotic safety easier in non-industrial applications, says Shimano. “Integrated controllers can create safer robots without safety shields for use in non-factory settings. Those controllers are more comfortable to use by people who are not engineers, assembly technicians, or scientists who want to use robotics collaboratively. Shrinking controllers are also in the minds of Nachi Robotic Systems Inc. (Novi, Michigan) president Michael Bomya. “The trend towards reducing the size of robot controllers will continue to the point where the controller’s integration into the robot arm will be simple and practical. The integration of the controller into the robot arm is a requirement for a humanoid robot.” The robot controllers will be small enough to be positioned within the manipulator to advance the mobile robots, Bomya says.
Collaborative Robotics
More powerful and small robot controllers facilitate “collaborative robotics,” allowing people and robots to work within a workspace in relatively close collaboration. “I see new platforms for controller enabling collaborative application. The robot is just one portion of the collaborative work cells, and other devices must facilitate it, “Carrier says. “Proposed revisions to the robot safety standard (R15.06) will help move the technology toward collaborative robots.” Robot manufacturers and integrators are both working towards collaborative robotics. Some robotic equipment is currently able to meet proposed revisions to the safety standard R15.06, says Charles Ridley, Material Handling Service Manager for PaR Systems Inc. (Shoreview, Minnesota). “Safety circuits have to be dual channeled and dually monitored to meet the new robot safety standard, with multiple processors controlling each safety circuit redundantly. The robot program limits the work envelope tracks the robot’s location and speed by dual processors. Ridley illustrates its point by citing an application for palletizing. “To pick up slip-sheets, the robot goes to a certain point within its work envelope. The safety inputs allow the operator to replenish them without stopping the robot when slip-sheets need replenishment. The robot continues to palletize, while safety inputs limit the robot ‘s ability to go where the operators are. “Ridley adds that controlling software recognizes when the palletizing work cell needs more slip-sheets and prevents the robot from moving into the area where an operator is inside the robot’s work envelope.
Jeff Fryman, the Robotic Industries Association ‘s Director of Standards Development (RIA, Ann Arbor, Michigan), takes a similar view to Ridley on the role of collaborative robotics. “During collaborative operations, the robot is in automatic mode, and the robot stops for cooperative service. Collaboration operation allows work cells to be designed without fixtures and simply drives the robot to a starting point. “The operator then commands the robot to perform a pre-programmed run. Fryman recalls a demonstration of a hand-guided collaborative operation during the March 2011 Automate trade show. “A simulation of a waterjet cutting work cell had been demonstrated at Automate 2011. A robot with 150 kg capacity stopped and waited for the operator to maneuver it inside the work cell. The operator would then exit the working space and return the robot to its fully automatic mode, where the robot would cut a pre-designed pattern without using fixtures, “said Fryman. “It is impressive to grab a robot by a joystick on the wrist plate and drive it around.” Continuing, Fryman says, “Collaborative robots can also assist the operator by doing the heavy lifting so the person can only focus on the thought processes without worrying about other works. Also, the controller designs have inbuilt safety-rated features that assure that robot will do exactly what it is told to do and stops on is own when it knows it did not.”
While the robot controller and its software make the work cell more predictable, human nature remains unpredictable. “The difficulty with the collaborative operation is that human operators do not always perform in a controlled or reliable fashion so that safeguarding could become a challenge. The revised safety standard will also require a risk assessment to address the potential hazards of some particular installation,” says Chris Anderson, The Welding Technology Leader with the Motoman Robotics Division of Yaskawa America Inc. Brandon Rohrer, Principal Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, New Mexico), agrees with Anderson’s assessment. “I am watching the trend of enabling robots to behave well in unpredictable, unexpected, and poorly modeled environments. Traditional assembly line robots work well as long as the lighting is just right, and everything coming down the conveyor belt is oriented the same way. If circumstances deviate too much from design conditions, the system chokes fast. New developments in controllers are pushing back those limits on how structured the environment must be.”
The notion of ridding work cells of hard stops intrigues John D’Silva, Marketing Manager with Siemens Industry Inc. (Norcross, Georgia). “The revised R15.06 robot safety standard could do away with hard stop requirements in new robots, with better control of restricted space. Collaborative robotics is a way of the future because both the robot and operator can work in harmony to increase production. The safety controller provides reliable safety during operation, setup, and commissioning phases of the work cell.” Both Fryman and D’Silva pointed out that proposed revisions to R15.06 relating to shield-free work cells will be applied to new robotic systems, and retrofitting current policies will not be an option for end-users.
Robotification
Controller advances will help lead the robotics into the latest applications. “Controller technology will continue to open new applications for robots, particularly in non-traditional areas such as people or custom machines, such as surface finishing, on-the-fly weight measurement, and precise assembly,” Dinsmoor. Likewise, John Boutsikaris, Senior Vice President of Adept Technology Inc. (Pleasanton, California), said: “Modern applications will continue to evolve with new gripper technologies and continuous performance improvements. The integration of sensory inputs, including sonar, scanning lasers, three-dimensional vision systems, and more, continues to broaden robotic applications into more versatile, interactive applications. When controllers become more efficient, they will be more able to handle other work cell equipment and facets, says Amy Peters, Rockwell Automation Inc.’s business planning manager (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). “End users want better interaction with the logic systems, integrated cinematics, and the ability to handle other elements of a production facility.”
Joe Campbell claims, “More smart controllers and improved safety circuits will allow robots to function closer to humans and open up many new applications. I see opportunities where multiple robots operate in a working cell in a very organized fashion.” Campbell also anticipates robots operating outdoors. “I see outside manufacturing and robots performing maintenance and repair of ship components onboard ships, also on oil rigs whose controllers can withstand the weather.” Greg Garmann, Motoman ‘s software, and control development chief, says, “Robot controllers have all the resources they need to leap into almost any new application. The only limitations are the creativity of programming engineers and the difficulty of the mission.
Dangerous and Hazardous Applications
Remote autonomous robots are witnessing several significant developments. One is that they are used in dangerous and dangerous areas and situations. RoboTex has produced robotics to keep law enforcement safe. “90% of all mobile robots are ROS-based / open source, and 100% of our robots are open source ROS-based. Users generally do not like being forced into a store, “says Nick Fragale, founder of Rover Robotics. “Furthermore, RoboTex already had many of the molds for injection molding parts and housings. Getting to market with metal sheeting could be easier and faster, but added weight can make a real difference in performance.” Clearpath Robotics, established in 2009, has manufactured autonomous mobile robots before Rover Robotics. Robots such as the Husky UGV can monitor construction sites autonomously, or collect data from hazardous areas for researchers. Robots like this provide more data while promoting safety and cost savings linked to having people in the field. Besides, large areas can be monitored with one robot, or fewer, than the multitude of sensors, batteries, and cables or wireless signals that would need to be manually placed around a site to gain similar data. The ability of mobile robots to roam autonomously continuously can gather many data points over time to cover an area that might be too large for wireless sensors. Additionally, in some applications, it is possible to have a real-time video where a remote pilot could take over the machine to inspect an area, inventory, or see what resources are on-site without leaving the office.

Artificial Pollination using Drones with Bubble Machine - Towards Robotics
Pollen-bearing soap bubbles may provide an effective and convenient form of artificial pollination
You have heard no doubt that bees are dying off, and that you should be worried about it. For the same reason, people are worried about cuddly polar bears, but not as many people are concerned about bees compared to the bears. Bees are integral to food production and hence their extinction is more threatening. Greenpeace reports that from 1947 to 2008, US National Agricultural Statistics showed a 60 percent decrease in the number of honeybee hives. Around one-third of your food can be attributed to the pollination of honey bees, so that’s a big deal. To aid in replacing these bees, Researchers have built a bubble-making drone capable of artificial pollination of flowers.
This research was carried out at the Japan Advanced Science and Technology Institute (JAIST) with the simple goal of providing a practical means of artificial pollination. Since years a number of scholars around the world have been working on this subject and some of them have experienced modest results. Yet it has not been realistic for robotic pollinators. They have to make direct contact with flowers, which is highly inefficient and sometimes leads to flower damage. Artificial pollination approach solves all problems, and in retrospect seems almost obvious: just fire pollen-laden bubbles at the flowers.
If you were at a birthday party for a kid then you already know how easy it is to make soap bubbles. The researchers developed special pollen carrying solutions in those bubbles, which was specially designed for effective pollination. They then placed the solution in a bubble system attached to a regular hex copter drone’s bottom. The drone can fly over flowers at two meters of speed per second and two meters of height, and still achieve a 90 percent pollination success rate. In no way will the bubbles hit flowers, but it is hardly important when you spray a field with thousands of bubbles per second.
In a press release for a paper published in the iScience newspaper 17-JUN-2020, JAIST researcher Eijiro Miyako explains how his team operated on a small pollinating drone which had the unfortunate side effect of constantly killing the flowers with which it came into touch. Frustrated, Miyako wanted to consider a suitable method for artificial pollination, and when blowing bubbles with his son at a playground, Miyako realized that if those bubbles could hold pollen grains, they would make a perfect distribution system: You can create and transport them very efficiently, generate them easily and after delivering their payload they literally disappear. Of course, they are not targetable, but it’s not like they need to chase anything, and there’s absolutely no reason not to compensate with high volume for low precision.
One advantage of using bubbles instead of feather brushes is that the bubbles require significantly less pollen. The researchers found that a feather brush applies about 1800 milligrams of pollen to each flower, whereas the bubbles require only 0.06 milligrams. That means farmers will need to harvest even less pollen before they manually pollinate their flowers if they apply it to a soap solution.
Henry Williams, a roboticist at the University of Auckland, who was not involved in the work says those savings could be significant. Considering the economy, he helped develop a pollinating robot of the size of a golf cart. Using a movable ram, it will move through a kiwi orchard that distinguishes individual kiwi flowers and pollinates them with a liquid sprayer. “Pollen was a considerable expense during the pollination season, and the primary impetus for the project was reducing pollen consumption,” he says. It used less pollen than handheld sprayers or air blowers because the robot targeted the spray precisely onto flowers. Bubbles may have the potential for incremental savings, he notes.
Miyako also works with robots, albeit a lot simpler. His team attached a bubble sprayer to an aerial drone and programmed the drone to fly a path around a line of fake lily flowers. They found that the drone could hit 90 percent of the flowers with bubbles after trying different speeds and heights.
The concern was so many bubbles exceeded their targets, and pollen lost. Miyako suggested two improvements: Better targeting by having a drone that could identify flowers might improve outcomes and formulating an environmentally friendly soap bubble solution that can biodegrade more rapidly.
However, Yu Gu, a roboticist at the University of West Virginia, is skeptical about using drones to deliver bubbles. He points out that the wind from the rotors makes it difficult to locate the bubbles with accuracy. They might be delivered more efficiently from a ground-based robot, such as a wheeled unit with a manipulator’s arm. Gu and colleagues have only this sort of robot, initially designed to gather samples on missions in space. And they’ve tested it in a greenhouse, pollinating raspberries. It uses a fine brush to collect and distribute pollen, which saves the step of collecting a supply of pollen.
Simon Potts, an agro-ecologist at Reading University, worries that such efforts will distract from the preservation of bees, which in many places are declining. The solution to bubbles raises the possibility of chemical interaction with pollination and polluting water, he says. “This is yet another piece of smart engineering that is being shoehorned to solve a problem that can be solved much more efficiently and sustainably.”

Computer Vision: Starting with a pinhole camera
Computer vision as the name suggests the study of the visual system for artificially intelligent systems like robots. Computer vision involves using a combination of camera hardware and computer algorithms to allow robots to collect visual information from its environment.
Robotics is a field that is heavily inspired by nature. We can attribute the features of the robotic computer vision system to that of a human vision system. Humans collect visual information through their eyes which, is sent to the brain and processed for further work. Robotic vision also functions similarly.
Basic pipeline:
Step 1: The robot scans the environment using a CCD (Charged Coupled Device) camera.
Step 2: Light intensities cause the accumulation of varying charges at the photo-sites. An electron beam scanner is responsible for measuring these intensities in each direction. The analog plot of the light intensities obtained is digitized (A/D conversion).
Step 3: The image is stored in the memory in the form of an array. This step is also known as the Frame Grabbing step.
Step 4: The obtained image information is operated upon to achieve a better vision. Techniques to achieve noise reduction and lost information retrieval are performed.
In this article, We shall cover the most basic and first block in the study of machine computer vision. Let us begin by introducing ourselves to the idea behind a pinhole camera and photometry.
Photometry:
The human eye is not equally sensitive to all wavelengths of visible light. Radiometry is the science of measuring light while photometry concentrates on the visible areas of light. Photometry attempts to account for this by weighing the measured power at each wavelength with a factor that represents how sensitive the eye is at that wavelength.
So how is the brightness at a pixel in the scene image determined?
To answer this question let us first understand the concept of Radiance, Irradiance, and Solid Angle.
Radiance:
Radiance is the power per unit foreshortened area emitted into a unit solid angle (W · m−2 sr−1 watts per square meter per steradian) by a surface. Luminance is a spectrally weighted radiance (Lumen · m−2· sr−1).
Irradiance:
Irradiance is the power per unit area (W · m−2 watts per square meter) of the radiant energy falling on a surface. Illuminance is spectrally weighted irradiance (Lumen · m−2).
Solid Angle:
The solid angle of a cone of directions is defined as the area cut out by the cone on the unit sphere. It is formulated as . Using simple logic we know that the more the power radiated by the scene the brighter the image will be. Therefore,

We will revisit the topic of brightness. For now, I leave you to think about how the solid angle, the power reflected by the scene, the power received by the scene, and the above proposition can be related to output the image irradiance. Below is the template you can brainstorm with.
Pinhole Camera:
Let us now try to capture an image from the given scene.
The image shows a peacock standing against the images sensors (which are in reality inside the camera). If you notice all the image sensors are equally exposed to each part of the peacock. This will cause each image sensor to pick up rays from each reflecting point the peacock’s body and cause the image to appear blurry as shown in the below photo.
To avoid this let us introduce a slit layer between the sensors and object of interest. This will each sensor to pick energy from only a certain localised region. For a better understanding look at the image below.
The image obtained is dark as the energy collected from a particular point on the image sensor is substantially less in amount. Therefore we get the following as a result of this.
We are getting a better image but need to collect more energy so that the image appears brighter. We do that using a lens as is shown below. The lens will be able to focus more energy on the image sensors.
This is the basic concept behind a pinhole camera. You should try to make one at home too for a better understanding. You can make one using the instruction given in the video below.

Automobile robotics: Applications and Methods
Introduction:
An automobile robot is a software-controlled machine that uses sensors and other technology to identify its environment and act accordingly. They work by combining artificial intelligence (AI) with physical robotic elements like wheels, tracks, and legs. Mobile robots are gaining increasing popularity across various business sectors. They assist with job processes and perform activities that are difficult or hazardous for human employees.
Structure and Methods:
The mechanical structure must be managed to accomplish tasks and attain its objectives. The control system consists of four distinct pillars: vision, memory, reasoning, and action. The perception system provides knowledge about the world, the robot itself, and the robot-environment relationship. After processing this information, sending the appropriate commands to the actuators that move the mechanical structure. Once the environment, and destination, or purpose of the robot is known, the robot’s cognitive architecture must plan the path that the robot must take to attain its goals.
The cognitive architecture reflects the purpose of the robot, its environment, and the way they communicate. Computer vision and identification of patterns are used to track objects. Mapping algorithms are used for the construction of environment maps. Motion planning and other artificial intelligence algorithms could eventually be used to determine how the robot should interact with each other. A planner, for example, might determine how to achieve a task without colliding with obstacles, falling over, etc. Artificial intelligence is called upon to play an important role in the treatment of all the information the robot collects to give the robot orders in the next few years. Nonlinear dynamics found in robots. Nonlinear control techniques utilize the knowledge and/or parameters of the system to reproduce its behavior. Complex algorithms benefit from nonlinear power, estimation, and observation.
Following are best-known control methods:
Computed torque control methods: A computed torque is defined using the second position derivatives, target positions, and mass matrix expressed in a conventional way with explicit gains for the proportional and derivative errors (feedback).
Robust control methods: These methods are similar to simulated methods of torque control, with the addition of a feedback variable depending on an arbitrarily small positive design constant E.
Sliding mode control methods: Increasing the controller frequency may be used to increase the system’s steady error. Taken to the extreme, the controller requires infinite actuator bandwidth if the design parameter E is set to zero, and the state error vanishes. This discontinuous controller is called a controller on sliding mode.
Adaptive methods: Awareness of the exact robot dynamics is relaxed compared to previous methods and this approach uses a linear assumption of parameters. These methods use feed-forward terminology estimation, thereby reducing the requirement for high gains and high frequency to compensate for uncertainties/disturbance in the dynamic model.
Invariant manifold method: the dynamic equation is broken down into components to perform functions independently.
Zero moment point control: This is a concept for humanoid robots associated, for example, with the control and dynamics of legged locomotion. It identifies the point around which no torque is generated by the dynamic reaction force between the foot and the ground, that is, the point at which the total horizontal inertia and gravity forces are equal to zero. This definition means the contact patch is planar and has adequate friction to prevent the feet from sliding
Navigation Methods: Navigation skills are the most important thing in the field of automobile robotics. The aim is for the robot to move in a known or unknown environment from one place to another, taking into account the sensor values to achieve the desired targets. This means that the robot must rely on certain factors such as perception (the robot must use its sensors to obtain valuable data), localization (the robot must use its sensors to obtain valuable data) The robot must be aware of its position and configuration, cognition (the robot must decide what to do to achieve its objectives), and motion control (the robot must calculate the input forces on the actuators to achieve the desired trajectory).
Path, trajectory, and motion planning:
The aim of path planning is to find the best route for the mobile robot to meet the target without collision, allowing a mobile robot to maneuver through obstacles from an initial configuration to a specific environment. It neglects the temporal evolution of motion. It does not consider velocities and accelerations. A more complete study is trajectory planning, with broader goals.
Trajectory planning involves finding the force inputs (control u (t)) to push the actuators so that the robot follows a q (t) trajectory which allows it to go from the initial to the final configuration while avoiding obstacles. To plan the trajectory it takes into account the dynamics and physical characteristics of the robot. In short, both the temporal evolution of the motion and the forces needed to achieve that motion are calculated. Most path and trajectory planning techniques are shared.
Applications of Automobile robotics:
A mobile robot’s core functions include the ability to move and explore, carry payloads or revenue-generating cargo, and complete complex tasks using an onboard system, such as robotic arms. While the industrial use of mobile robots is popular, particularly in warehouses and distribution centers, its functions may also be applied to medicine, surgery, personal assistance, and safety. Exploration and navigation at ocean and space are also among the most common uses of mobile robots.
Mobile robots are used to access areas, such as nuclear power plants, where factors such as high radiation make the area too dangerous for people to inspect themselves and monitor. Current automobile robotics, however, do not build robots that can withstand high radiation without having to compromise their electronic circuitry. Attempts are currently being made to invent mobile robots to deal specifically with those situations.
Other uses of mobile robots include:
shoreline exploration of mines
repairing ships
a robotic pack dog or exoskeleton to carry heavy loads for military troopers
painting and stripping machines or other structures
robotic arms to assist doctors in surgery
manufacturing automated prosthetics that imitate the body’s natural functions and
patrolling and monitoring applications, such as determining thermal and other environmental conditions
Cons and Pros of automobile robotics:
Their machine vision capabilities are a big benefit of automobile robots. The complex array of sensors that mobile robots use to detect their surroundings allows them to observe their environment accurately in real-time. That is especially valuable in constantly evolving and shifting industrial settings.
Another benefit lies in the onboard information system and AI used by AMRs. The autonomy provided by the ability of the mobile robots to learn their surroundings either through an uploaded blueprint or by driving around and developing a map allows for quick adaptation to new environments and helps in the continued pursuit of industrial productivity. Furthermore, mobile robots are quick and flexible to implement. These robots can make their own path for motion.

Communication challenges between robot and endpoint
Looking ahead in the future, manufacturers are trying to find more non-industrial applications for automobile robotics. Current technology is a mix of hardware, software, and advanced machine learning; it is considered solution-focused and rapidly evolving. AMRs are still struggling to move from one point to another; it is important to enhance spatial awareness. The design of the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) algorithm is one invention that is trying to solve this problem.
