Hi! I wanted to say how beautiful your combinations of Mission Impossible and A Softer World is, and I'm curious about how you make them. What app/site do you use to organize your pictures? Do you come up with quotes based on the ones from A Softer World website or do you use the ones that were already there? Of course, if you want to share these details, there's no pressure if you don't.🌻
Have a nice day!
Thanks so much, I’m so glad you like them! <3 Much time was spent on these last weekend, my favorite niche hobby.
I use Clip Studio Paint for everything; specifically ye ole version 1.9.7, but I assume the current 2.0+ release generally has the same features and is probably less buggy on MacOS Sonoma, lol. It’s great for adjusting colors, since Tonal Correction has sliders for Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Levels (for Shadows/Midtones/Highlights), and Color Balance (Cyan/Red, Magenta/Green, and Yellow/Blue for Shadows/Midtones/Highlights).
And the text is all from the original strips, I just choose images that combine with the text to achieve some kind of narrative! :-) The most recent set uses 556, 617, 942, 1071, 776, 1057, 621, 1234, 913, 1164, 1175, while the “ethan & the impossible” set uses 1188, 273, 1024, 827, 791, 938, 370. If the on-click alt text from the original strip fits what I’m going for I include it as upside down gray text at the bottom (based off how the original comic handled the alt text in this set of multiple, as a friend pointed out to me a few years ago), otherwise I leave it out.
unless you play it good and right — 38,000 words, Ivan Vorpatril/Byerly Vorrutyer, post-CVA mutual pining fake dating ft. undercover ImpSec mission at a seaside casino resort.
“Um.” Ivan colored under By’s gaze. He was pretty sure that behind the dark glasses By was staring at him like he’d grown a second head. “It’s just—I usually bring girls here.”
In which there are an undercover surveillance job, an old enemy, and Byerly Vorrutyer’s broken heart.
Being on something of Vladimir Vysotsky translation kick I have translated «Москва – Одесса» / “Moscow to Odessa” (Spotify, Youtube) into English and made it singable! Lyrics below the cut:
—
Again I fly from Moscow to Odessa!
My plane is stuck again on the concrete
And here comes our stewardess, god bless her, blue-clad contessa
Reliable as the whole civilian fleet.
In Murmansk the clouds are thinning out
And Ashgabat waits in the open air
Open are Kyiv, and Kharkov, Chisinau
And Lvov is too—but I don’t need to go there!
They tell me, “There’s not a chance today
Don’t count upon the heavens to be nice!”
And sure enough, they’re saying no express flights to Odessa
The runway’s covered hopelessly in ice!
In Leningrad the snow is melting fast
But why should I for Leningrad declare?
In Tbilisi as always it is warm—
They grow tea there, but I don’t need to go there!
I hear: last flight to Rostov is departing!
But it’s Odessa that’s where I need to be!
But where I need to go—landing lights aren’t restarting
And so the flight is once again delayed!
Where I go, the streets are clad in white
And tomorrow there will be heavy snow
And somewhere else it is all clear and bright
I’m sure that’s nice—but I don’t need to go there!
Here you can’t fly out—and there you can’t fly in
It’s so unfair, I know only defeat
But the stewardess, she dully invites us to board
Reliable as the whole civilian fleet.
You can go to anywhere on the map
To a place that no reward could get me to bear
The port of Vladivostok has been breached
Paris has too—but I don’t need to go there!
Lift off, the sky is clearing, our destination nearing
The liner’s engine working hard and shrill
I’m just on pins and needles, they’ll reroute any minute
Of all their reasons I have had my fill!
Where I go, it’s impenetrable fog
And tomorrow is still more heavy snowfall!
They’ve opened London, Delhi, even Prague
It’s all good now—but I don’t need to go there!
Do I laugh or cry now, delayed again and how now,
And very soon we will our past selves meet
Led swiftly in reverse by the stewardess, our miss Odessa
Who looks just like the whole civilian fleet.
Departures delayed till eight again!
And the weary masses can only accept it!
I’m sick to death of waiting, damn it all!
And I’m flying to wherever they will have me!
I’m sick to death of waiting, damn it all!
I am flying to wherever they will have me.
By didn’t make his living through charity. But he did make his living through a weird sort of loyalty. And, somewhere underneath the persiflage, camouflage, and just plain flage, he was high Vor of the highest…
A(n electropop & alt rock) fanmix for Byerly Vorrutyer, ImpSec informant.
Byerly Vorrutyer | The Vorkosigan Saga - Lois McMaster Bujold
Usually, his job is to observe, not to act. Not even to pass judgment on the gossip he passes on—that's the ImpSec analysts’ job—but after several years, he is doubtless developing considerable discernment in his own right. Street smarts, for a narrow value of “street.”
By does have his speciality, low dives and high Vor, which is somewhat geographically constrained. But if one of his targets went off-planet, so might he.
what keeps us standing in this view — 12300 words, tej arqua vopatril/ivan vorpatril/byerly vorrutyer. post-captain vorpatril’s alliance.
“The Imperium has to honor off-world marriages,” Ivan said. “We’re trying to get people to emigrate to Sergyar, remember? Can’t be scaring off potential colonists by refusing to accept their family ties. We have to have, y’know, a comity doctrine.”
In which the Vorpatrils get married to Byerly Vorrutyer, for better or worse.
