But these synthetic fabrics, from which 60% of all clothing on earth is made, have a big hidden problem: when they’re washed, they release tiny plastic bits — called microfibers — that flow down our drains, through water treatment plants, and out into our rivers, lakes and oceans by the billions.”

All you need to do is find a second-hand outfit from a second-hand store or a clothing swap, upload a photo to your Instagram using the hashtags #secondhandnotsecondbest and #TrustedClothes, and write a blog article about how textile waste and the clothes we wear affects the environment.

All blog articles must be submitted to contests@trustedclothes.com with the applicant’s name, age, preferred contact information, and postal address.

Deadline is May 15 at 11:59 PM with winners being revealed on May 30 with prizes of $250, $100, and $50 awarded to the top three entrants.

Winning submissions will be evaluated by the number of likes the photo receives on Instagram and the quality of the article. Assessment of quality will be performed by a professional journalist.
