To me the most fun part about fix-its is placing dominoes.

Tragedies often consist of escalating series of actions and circumstances which, in isolation, were not clearly leading to the tragic end but form a chain of cause-and-effect directly towards it in hindsight. In equal but opposite fashion, I love starting with small inoccuous changes to canon that in themselves do not obviously fix everything but start a new chain that leads to a better ending.

It's kind of impossible for fix-its to feel fully natural– the reader by definition knows what the original ending was and that this ending will be happier because the writer wants it to be– but it is possible for them to not feel contrived. A big deus-ex-machina, or a character breaking with their pre-established tragic flaws to suddenly make all the "correct" decisions almost always feels unsatisfying to me.

But a few carefully placed small domino pieces slowly knocking over bigger and bigger tiles until the entire story has radically changed? That's a lot more fun.

It recquires the author to both correctly identify the original chain of cause-and-effect and understand the characters well enough to know how they'd react to different circumstances. Because if the story feels like it's fixing the wrong problem or the characters don't act like themselves the magic is lost. But when it works? When it clicks and the reader sees the domino chain laid out in front of them? It's beautiful.

senku is the most sentimental guy out there even though he'd rather die than admit it. the first invention he made once he had enough resources and manpower was ramen– his favourite food because he used to frequent a ramen stall with byakuya all the time. similarly, the first earnest request from gen to senku was a bottle of cola– gen's favourite drink from the past. this was also a silent admission from gen, that they are both incredibly nostalgic and sentimental people. what follows after was senku bringing back christmas, a celebration that he used to enjoy with his dearest father, which the meaning was only understood by senku and gen. and senku very much wanted gen to know that it was christmas, he didn't want to celebrate it alone. another silent conversation between them, in which they both say the complete opposite on the outside ("what a coincidence") because they're well aware that the other understands them even without words. this is senku, standing under bright lights, admitting to gen that he is a sentimental guy too and he enjoys celebrations in particular. and so, their little game to surprise each other never ends– gen surprised senku with his birthday next, another celebration that brought senku back to his time with his father. it's senku's silent way of grieving... to relieve his memories with byakuya. and gen is always there to help him through it.

they really fit each other like puzzles... senku, who needs to process his grief in a subtle way but would not ever admit to it, and gen, who is a mentalist who manages the mental health of everyone and brings the people together through celebrations. no words are needed between them. they already have each other :(

Idk if you can do something like, Senku having his time to mourn his father, because I've seen a lot of drawings of him with his dad but, not really... Like sad or taking time to process his lost, sorry if it's a bother I love your art! ☁

it's so wild to me that you absolutely cannot force a hyperfixation to happen. like you'll watch the most perfectly tailor-made-for-you content that everyone says you'll love and feel absolutely nothing, and then the thing you watch on a whim to fill time will reach through the screen and put its damn fingers in your brain and start rearranging the neurons right in front of you and every single time you're like THIS??? THIS??????? and this happens like every 6-12 months forever
