Title: Preysight: Son of darkness (2023) Author: Tod Townsend Vote: 7.5/10 Short story that manages to show the suffering of a nightlord before the suicidal desire of his primarch. It doesn't shine with particular originality but few writings set in the Warhammer 40k universe have this quality. On the other hand it has a good stylistic expressiveness.

Title: Choices (2021) Author: Tod Townsend Vote:7.5/10 Monologue of a traitor space marines but not by his choice. The theme of choice is at the heart of the short story, choices made, choices to be made and choices that have not been made. An intense and memorable story about the possibility of choosing even in the cruellest situations.

Title: Aquila (2021) Author: Rhysh63 Vote: 6.5/10 Short story of a little girl in the gloomy world of Warhammer 40k. Sad but sweet, the story is surprising because it doesn't end with the usual carnage but in a decidedly more optimistic way towards a future that no one expects to be easy.

Title: The Totem-Pole (1939) Author: Robert Bloch Vote: 7.5/10 This is definitely one of the best stories written by Bloch. Although brief, the revelation of the mystery occurs little by little until the horror reveals itself before the protagonist, the reader and the victim. Good karmic story on the theme of guilt and punishment.

Title: The temple (1920) Author: H.P.Lovecraft Vote: 6.5/10
This Teutonic captain of a German submarine drives with Germanic determination towards the abyss pushed by unknown forces. The story well describes the sense of suffocation inside the submarine but this constant pressure on the Germanic character of the protagonist becomes strange after the thirteenth time.

Title: Herbert West, Reanimator (1921) Author: H. P. Lovecraft Vote: 7/10 6 stories with a medical file in the center with the intention of reanimating the corpses. Disturbing and perverse with each new story West slips more and more into madness while maintaining an appearance of mental clarity and reasonableness. A worthy heir to Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll without a doubt.

Title: The Capital of the World (1936) Author: Ernest Hemingway Vote:6/10
The protagonist of this story is the perfect example of the typical character written by Hemingway: a man or a boy who doesn't want to grow up but wants to live in an eternal childhood always chasing dangers and risks. In this specific case, however, the risk ends up being too great and yet even in death he maintains that reckless innocence of one who has dared too much others who have aged and died without ever having really lived.

Title:  Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)
Vote: 6/10
This movie deviates only marginally from the story of Jules Verne but makes good use of modern special effects resulting good even if not memorable, indeed. It looks like a generic Sunday afternoon movie. It has no major flaws but no major advantages either.

Title: The shunned house (1924) Author: H.P.Lovecraft Vote:6/10 A story in which the real protagonists are the molds and poisonous gases that fill an abandoned house. The unfortunate protagonist of this novel remains fascinated by the aura of mystery surrounding the house as well as his grandfather and the two in their investigations end up getting a very particular idea of the cause of the many mysterious deaths. A well-written story that however leans a little too much on the numerous misfortunes of the family that owns the house, giving the impression of reading a crime news article in which the author got carried away.

Title: The tomb (1917) Author: H.P.Lovecraft   Vote: 7.5/10 A man's obsession with a Roman woman turns out to be a spirit possession that slowly makes its way to the protagonist. The transformation takes place so slowly that only at the end we realize what is really happening.

Title: RRR (2022) Vote: 7/10 Movie full of a deep nationalism with action scenes so exaggerated as to be almost comical. The plot is nothing exceptional but it is the two superhuman protagonists who hold up the entire three hours of duration. We are not told in the film that they are more than just men but what they do has obvious heroic overtones. They are stronger, faster, more determined and vital than any other person. When at a certain point one of the two steals the clothes as well as the bow and arrow from the statue of an Indian god whose name it bears, the divine parallelism was clear. This movie is worth seeing even if only for the action scenes and for the dances in full Bollywood musical style. Another feature of Indian cinema that stands out several times. But the animals in cgi are atrocious, unwatchable. They looked like they were made of plastic.

Title: The Yellow Sign (1895) Author: Robert Chambers Vote: 6.5/10 Tale from which Lovecraft drew inspiration. This is certain but the two writers remain very different and in a certain sense Chambers is less prone to cosmic horrors and more to the single individual who remains at the mercy of events that he does not understand and only vaguely senses.

Title:  The Carrion Throne (2017)
Author:  Chris Wraight
Vote: 7.5/10
Characters well characterized even if not with many pages available fill a world that lives in fear and stagnation under the watchful eye of the Inquisition. The real protagonist is the great mother planet earth with its trillions of inhabitants who live like insects in gigantic anthill cities, forgotten and abandoned, without any protection against xenos threats.
