One thing that I really enjoyed about the latest Deltarune chapters is how much the reveal at the end recontextualised Ralsei's character and the information he presents to us in his introduction. Below are some disjointed thoughts about that.
When Chapter 1 first released, I remember feeling that his explanation of the prophecy and how battle works (and his encouragement of a peaceful approach to resolving conflicts) seemed almost like an introduction to the rules of the world that might have to be subverted later - sort of in the same way that Flowey in Undertale initially establishes the rules of the world as "kill or be killed", which you then override by choosing nonviolence in order to reach the happiest ending.
This observation created a bit of dissonance between my Undertale player brain ("of course I want to approach all battles peacefully and spare everyone!") and my narrative-focused brain ("is the peaceful approach really the right one in the context of this story? is there some future twist that will completely recontextualise what we've been told about how the world works?")
When Chapter 2 released, I felt the dissonance less - it's painfully clear that the consequences of going out of your way to hurt people are Bad, so I felt much better about choosing the peaceful approach.
But I still wasn't sure what to make of Ralsei - why was he so insistent on us being nice to enemies, if he also believes that Darkners' only purpose is to support Lightners (as per the pre-castle conversation in Chapter 1)? Is it just because the prophecy says it's the way to go? Why does it matter so much to him?
To be clear: I never thought he was like. evil or anything. I figured he was doing the best he could with the information he had. But how accurate was that information? Could he be misguided in some way? He was clearly hiding stuff, and not knowing what he was hiding and why left some uncertainty.
But then we get to Chapter 4, and suddenly Ralsei's motivations become a lot clearer. The prophecy didn't say anything about kindness or mercy - that was his own personal advice, given in the hopes that the prophecy could be changed. He wasn't just acting according to the prophecy; he was genuinely trying to make a difference.
And now knowing that Ralsei has been encouraging Kris and Susie to be kind in hopes of altering the prophecy's narrative... it's particularly interesting in light of the fact that every chapter has a Moment where everyone you've befriended in the dark world shows up to help out - but only if you take the pacifist approach (with the exception of Chapter 2).
There's Chapter 1 with the king being overthrown. Chapter 2 with the Ultimate Group Project (Thrash Machine). Chapter 3's version of this is particularly interesting because it interacts with a part of the prophecy: Susie repairs Tenna offscreen if you recruit enough people to help (or just avoid violence?? reports seem varied on this one). The prophecy about Tenna still comes to pass (he's broken), but it's not the end for him.
And - I just found this out a day or two ago, actually - something similar happens in Chapter 4??? It seems that Jackenstein straight up falls to his death(?) in the scene just before the finale if you choose to be violent, but all the Sanctuary Darkners come to his rescue if you stay pacifist the whole way through.
Susie's comment about being nice paying off seems a lot more pointed in this context. Whether you choose a pacifist or violent approach is starting to have more obvious, more significant consequences.
At the end of Chapter 4, Ralsei makes it clear that he believes his own efforts (in guiding Kris and Susie towards nonviolence) have failed, because he was hoping that what's written in the prophecy would change, and it hasn't. But there's a big difference between "Tenna gets broken and stays broken forever" and "Tenna gets broken but is patched up and can still have a happy ending", even though both follow the letter of the prophecy. Maybe there's more than one way for that final prophecy to play out, too.
Susie's the one who has the conviction to fight against fate, but I want to believe that Ralsei's efforts had some meaning as well, even if we can't see it yet.

So just in general, I think Chapter 3 and Tenna in particular make it clear that Darkners' histories aren't limited to what they've experienced since their dark fountain was created. Tenna as a person can't be separated from the history of his light world counterpart (TV).
To be fair this connection could be inferred in the earlier chapters as well, but I felt that Chapter 3 made the connection between light and dark worlds a lot easier to make sense of.
In regards to Darkners' relationship histories being influenced by the light world:
(some spoilers for the secret game/route/whatever it is people are calling it? in Chapter 3)
Ramb dialogue in the green room:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Implying that Queen and King (the Darkners) met when they (the laptop/cards) were taken to Kris's house to play make believe.
I don't think I got this dialogue on my first playthrough, though, so it's possible you have to get S-rank on the first board for it?
Tenna when talking about Spamton near the end of the backstage game:
Tumblr media
Implying that he met Spamton due to the laptop (light world object, is literally Queen but also would contain other Cyber World Darkners) being brought home.
ALRIGHT it's been two weeks, I've either seen for myself or been spoiled on most everything in the new chapters, it's time for some Deltarune posting!
First impressions/some general thoughts below. Mostly just throwing stuff out into the void here. Long post under the cut!
-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
-loved the new chapters
-One of my first thoughts on my playthrough of Chapter 3 was "Ralsei please just explain to Susie that Darkners can't go to the light world" and fortunately he immediately did that, but uh. Ralsei hesitating to tell Susie about something he knows will upset her was certainly a running theme huh
-I love Susie and Ralsei's dynamic in these two chapters so so so much they're killing me
-Overall these two chapters addressed/cleared up a lot of things in a really satisfying way - one highlight, I think, is we learned exactly how Darkners can be influenced by the history of their light world counterparts. The question of "how did the Spade King know Queen if their worlds were literally just created and also in different buildings" has been haunting me since Chapter 2 released, and I am so glad that we have an answer for that now!
-My first impression of Tenna: oh god it's just another Spamton. -My current impression of Tenna: ...I was not immune to the sad TV man
-Missed out on the majority of the secret stuff in Chapter 3 the first time around, got the Mantle the second time, but... I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the requirements for getting it. not sure it's worth it. feeling a little wary about the video game murder.
-Ramb's complaint that Tenna's version of the game is a "line from A to B" that doesn't permit freedom struck me as somewhat hypocritical, considering the version of the game Ramb presents permits no solution other than violence and is just as linear, even if the endpoint is different. At least in Tenna's games you're given more ways to get keys/photos than you actually need, which gives you options in how you complete the game - you can do as much or as little as you want!
-That being said, while it's hard to gauge Kris's opinion of... a lot of things in the chapter, I get the impression that Ramb may have been right about what type of game they'd prefer playing, given their stat description after acquiring the Mantle? hmm
-speaking of Tenna's version of the games, I loved the bit where they switch the controllers. I wish that went on for longer.
-Somehow my favourite scene in every chapter so far (or like. one of my favourites. at the very least a scene that lives rent free in my head) is "character has a big development moment and/or complete and utter breakdown at the end of the second act/beginning of the third act"
-Somehow I also have a different fave character in every chapter
-Chapter 4 is so cinematic. many many instances of me going "whoa... that's really cool..."
-on the flipside the gameplay was very stressful because I don't do spooky dark areas/chase sequences very well and there was a lot of that, but it set the atmosphere well so I can't really complain!
-One highlight of the chapter is definitely Kris going after the soul with a stick while Noelle and Susie are having a Moment just outside in Noelle's dead/missing/??? sister's room. almost made up for getting jumpscared by them.
-Kris can we talk about it. Kris I don't know what's going on with you, I'm just trying to work with Susie here. Kris do you want to talk to literally anyone about it. Kris who was phone. Kris are you okay. Kris.
-mixed feelings on the Berdly content - while everything that happened with him was understandable in context, I'm irrationally sad that it seems as though he's back to being framed as an irrelevant joke character where his gimmick is that no one likes him or wants his company. except possibly Kris. the interactions make complete sense but on a meta level they feel like an indication that we're basically done with him. and I don't like it.
-like I know the reason they exclude him from the "group studying session" is that everyone involved has ulterior motives and no actual studying is going to happen, but the exclusion itself is... upsetting.
-also the phone call scene is really easy to misread if you forgot/disregarded a key part of his character and people sure are doing that a lot now. guys. guys. Berdly doesn't actually want to go on a romantic date with Noelle to the festival he just thinks she does and is trying to be considerate of her feelings because no one actually ever told him even in the Dark World that she's not into him. them finding out Cyber World wasn't a dream wouldn't even fix the problem here. Susie yelling at him on Noelle's behalf is sweet but it also isn't going to fix the problem here. Noelle is the only person who is aware of this misunderstanding and she never cleared it up!! he's not homophobic or whatever he's just stupid!! he's not going to get it if she doesn't tell him!!
-so yeah my one fear is that Berdly is going to continue to be played in this pseudo-antagonistic role and people are going to continue to hate him for it. and that he's going to be otherwise irrelevant. please please please don't do this to him.
-also apparently unpopular opinion but I think Kris is actually fine with the idea of going with him to the festival. they like him. they're gamer pals.
-also also speaking of favourite characters WHERE IS PAPYRUS--
-okay moving on
-As soon as the old man appeared I knew who he was and I knew where this was going. I wasn't quite prepared for the scene in the office though.
-Gerson might be my favourite secret boss fight so far. It's pretty much the only time in the entire game you can feel good about letting loose and just attacking (in my experience, at least). You can't really hurt him and he won't really kill you. Susie's having a great time. He's having a great time. Susie's getting better and better at healing and the improvement sticks because a loss =/= a death. She could just take the axe and he'd let her but she chooses the honorable method instead of taking the easy way out I love her. It's a friendly, wholesome sparring match. Despite being difficult in its own way it feels like a break from the general stress and pain of the rest of the chapter.
-It also makes the sequence with the statue in the second sanctuary hit way harder because it's a distorted version of a fight you've just been through and it makes it so much more obvious that Something's Wrong.
-loving the developing pattern in the new chapters of: Susie meets a guy -> Susie thinks the guy is annoying and doesn't want anything to do with him at first -> Susie gets deeply attached to the guy within a matter of hours -> the guy is now dead. and by loving it I mean ough
-At least she can save Tenna (provided you choose to be kind)
-I was not prepared for the Actual Roaring Knight in Chapter 3, but when the gang cornered it in Chapter 4 and it went and pulled out an entire Titan my thought at that point was more or less "ok yeah this might as well happen" because, well, we had to fight something.
-it was a really cool fight though
-I love that Gerson came back, somehow, to help them at the end. But I do wonder if it was actually him? since he vanishes after the battle......
-wait is he the one who stops you from backtracking
-Like many others, I thought for a bit that the twist on the prophecy would be that Susie wasn't one of the heroes. And, well, that is still a possibility - but reflecting on the church section at the beginning (specifically Catty's mess of a speech), I'm wondering if it's really that important, who a given hero is? Maybe the hero descriptions are so vague because there are multiple people who could step in to fill the role - all that matters is someone does it.
-I was also convinced that - with how much the final prophecy was set up as a big deal - we'd surely see it by the end. It's impressive how well the narrative threaded the needle between giving/withholding information - we now know for certain it's something very very bad, but we don't actually know what it is.
-I have some thoughts about the reveals regarding Ralsei but it got long so I'm making that a different post I think. Suffice it to say I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that Ralsei was never blindly following the prophecy - he was trying to find a way to subvert it from the beginning.
-also makes the first Sanctuary section hit harder when you realise that on top of his worry that Susie will see the final prophecy, he also sees it written in glass there for the first time himself, and that's when he knows his efforts to change it have failed.
-uhhhh
-okay I have other thoughts probably but these are my most coherent offerings for now.
-HOW do you get this treasure chest

Toby was reportedly quite the storyteller during the development of Deltarune Chapter 2! @videochess stated in a recent interview that “he'd basically act out a live radio drama of the entire chapter himself”, voice acting the characters and even playing the correct music for each scene! So, I’ve spent the past few weeks doing basically nothing but playing Tears of the Kingdom... and I’ve gotta talk about it a little. This is your warning that I will probably be posting about spoilers going forward, so do be careful if you’re trying to avoid that!
I have a lot of thoughts about this game and somewhat mixed feelings, but on the whole I think it’s a very impressive game. Some more specific thoughts below the cut:
One thing that’s made me very happy so far: WE HAVE CHEESE NOW.
No, but seriously, I think the recipe system in BotW was a whole lot of fun and I’m so glad they expanded on it in TotK with new ingredients and recipes, plus there’s that new recipe system that records them for you! I’m this close to making a list of all the new recipes I can get my hands on, and I’m probably actually going to make a post for that soon.
One thing that made me mad: okay if I’m being honest there’s a lot of things. But starting at my most petty, WHY did they nerf the Rito bows?? They’re supposed to be the archers, so if anything their bows should be more powerful! The bows wouldn’t even decay because they’re not made of metal so what is the justification here?? I want my base-20-damage Falcon Bow back!
(With that being said, I’m so glad they let us have replica Champion weapons from the getgo while giving the original weapons to NPCs who don’t have to worry about weapon durability - it’s a great way to ensure that I (and many others, I’m sure) will actually use them.)
One thing that made me sad: Dinraal’s new path doesn’t go through Tanagar Canyon.
This one’s partly personal, because Dinraal was the first dragon I ever saw as I was first crossing through the canyon in my initial playthrough of BotW, so I’ve always personally associated her with that area. But there’s also the fact that if I’m remembering correctly, it’s mentioned during the Champion’s Ballad that Dinraal has followed that path by Rito Village for so long that she’s considered a guardian spirit of the village, not to mention the fact that she’s a part of the trials that were created for the Rito Champion an entire 10,000 years ago, suggesting that she has inhabited that region for a very, very long time. And now she just... doesn’t??
This is just one of many changes in this game that felt just slightly disrespectful to the lore established in BotW, but it’s the only one I haven’t seen anyone else make note of yet, so here I am.
(Plus, her new path feels... a bit boring compared to the other two? Naydra and Farosh each do a proper loop through a section of Hyrule, but Dinraal just covers the same arc on land and then in the Depths. Now this is mostly outweighed by the fact that you can ride the dragons now and I’m absolutely ecstatic about that, but it was a little bit of a letdown realising she was just going back the way she came once she got out of the Depths...)
Still, with that being said...
One thing that filled me with glee: you can ride on the dragons! I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time just hanging out with them since I heard about this, and I’m probably going to spend a whole lot more time doing it in the future, too. It’s so much fun.

i’ve been thinking about berdly’s behavior in cyber world, and more specifically the way he acts around queen—rethinking it, actually. there’s a few angles to approach this from, like the very obvious fact that he desperately seeks queen’s attention and approval due to a lack of parental attention and approval from his home life. of course he’s going to take opportunity to try and impress her, when the image she has curated for herself is very much “Mom.”
and there’s the less obvious fact that he is so eager to help her with her world domination plans because they fulfill a wish of his own. he doesn’t want to go back to the real world, because in the real world, he’s running out of time. college is just around the corner, and once it hits, he’s pretty convinced he’s going to lose noelle’s friendship. in a bigger city with more people, she just… won’t need him anymore. she can make all the friends she wants. she’s pretty, she’s kind and selfless, she’s smart as all hell, and she’s talented. she can do anything. she’s moving onto a bright future, and berdly believes himself to be incapable of keeping up. he’s never going to get into the same colleges noelle will. or he’ll flunk out if he does. but most importantly, he’s going to be left behind, because he’s not good enough. at least in queen’s dark world “smartopia”, they never have to grow up. no one has to leave. no one has to be left behind.
(this has been labeled “slightly less obvious” because the full scope of it is not clear from the beginning, and still isn’t clear until you read in-between the lines some.)
we’ve talked about this before. these two perspectives come together to fully explain berdly’s behavior and we don’t need to discuss it anymore except yes we do because
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: a textbox from queen that reads “Perhaps If I Make Her Face Into A Robot One…?” followed by a textbox from berdly that reads “B-but… you said you wouldn’t do that if I…” end ID.]
?
she said she wouldn’t do that if you what, berdly? if you obeyed and never questioned her? if you became her “willing peon” to encourage noelle to obey in turn…?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: two textboxes from queen that read “A Peon Must Be ‘Willing’ To Assist Me In World Domination. If Only She Had Fellow Peons To Encourage Her” end ID.]
there’s another layer to berdly chasing queen through cyber city, desperately trying to get her attention—and it’s not just because he wanted her praise, although that remains true. i think a lot of it was he was trying to divert her attention to him.
look. right here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: a textbox from susie that reads “Berdly!? You asked BERDLY to be on your team!?” followed by a textbox from queen that reads “(I Did Not Ask Him I Did Not Ask Him I Did Not Ask Him)” end ID.]
the usual interpretation of this exchange is that queen was completely disinterested in having berdly as a Peon from the start, and that he was simply overeager and essentially shoved his way onto the team and queen was like Oh My Godddd Fine. but the above screenshots contradict this. “you said you wouldn’t do that if—” this indicates that berdly was not 100% compliant when they first met. because queen had to threaten him with hurting noelle to get him to listen to her.
no, she didn’t ask him. she coerced him.
she lies to him and tells him he can trust her. he seems to be pretty gullible, but i don’t think that’s necessarily the case here. he wants to believe her, and he would also like her unreserved approval, and he would also like her plans to succeed for his own reasons, but you know what else i think he wants? i think he wants to distract her from noelle and prove himself to be just as capable of opening the fountain. look, look! he’ll do anything she asks, he’ll kiss up to her the way she likes so much, he doesn’t need Fellow Peons to encourage him, he’ll obey on his own already…!! it’s his way of trying to shield noelle. unfortunately he’s too overbearing with his attempts (and this is another part of why i believe his kissing-up-antics are not entirely genuine; he is trying way, way, way too hard) and ends up annoying queen.
but he’s thinking about it this way: if queen changes her mind and decides to use him for her plans instead, he can be certain that noelle won’t be hurt. maybe he’ll get hurt, but who cares about him? he’s never mattered. noelle’s the important one, the talented one, the one who deserves the moon and all the stars in the sky, the one everyone loves. that’s why he’s so willing to risk himself in her place.
if queen’s plans don’t work out and they all go back to their regular lives, hometown can’t afford to lose noelle. but no one’s going to miss a little bluebird.

The sudden realization that Berdly would've related a lot to Spamton if they had the chance to meet...
He was starved for attention. No one looked his way until he caught a lucky break. He knew he wasn't fully responsible for his own success, and that he was dependent on someone else to sustain this reputation that was his first successful opportunity to become someone memorable. He feared the day that he and the person he relied on would start leading separate lives, but that he was in too deep now to turn back.
