Everyone’s gone home, save for the two of them, and while three months ago, Carmy would have probably been crawling out of his skin for anything with Sydney, he’s just happy to have this. Olivia’s at the zoo with Richie and Eva for a penguin encounter experience (a gift presented to her today, followed by a wink from Richie in Carmy’s direction. He’s been trying not to think about it too much), and for the first time in months, he can finally be himself again and attempt to have good in his life. Even still, there’s a part of him that itches for a cigarette as they clean up from the party; a part of him that craves to numb out any feelings he has with each inhale. Is this what peace is? He’s spent so long under his own assumption that there is no such thing, not with a seven year old and a floundering restaurant, but the longer he sits in this space with Sydney, the more he thinks there’s a chance for him.

This is what he’s afraid of. Instinctively, he rubs a fist over his own heart, and they sit together in the uncomfortable silence. She looks like she’s dying to break it, physically holding the words back from leaving her mouth to ease the tension. But she doesn’t. It’s not the easy quiet that they used to relax into while they worked on opposite sides of the Beef’s kitchen, but it’s not the knife’s edge silence that Carmy associates with arguments once they’ve reached their point of no return. When no one breathes, no one moves— no one wants to see where the conflict goes once the Berzattos have run out of words. The gap between them is undeniably vast, but it seems crossable. So long as he does not slap away every hand that reaches across towards him, if he extends his own into the abyss, this might not be the end.

when youre a trans woman you pretty quickly realize that basically every US comedy TV show made between like 1980 and 2018 is going to have anywhere from one episode to a recurring character thats just a really mean spirited caricature of your lived experience and the thing that makes you happy. and if you ever pick up a new show it becomes a sword of damocles hanging over your head. and if you go on tumblr and the show is popular youll see someone praising it for mentioning queer people.
