I’m so much better now! I left hospital a month ago. Doctor said that it’s a miracle how fast I’m recovering. I’m doing walking exercise everyday. I try to eat healthy. Physically I’m great. Just need a little more time for full recovery.

But mentally I’m still not well. I think the near death experience was really traumatic. My favorite hobby is watching movies (thriller/horror mostly) but when I went to a movie theater to watch Sinners, I had an anxiety attack. I guess watching movies in theaters is too much for me right now. So I’m into reading books these days. I’ve finished reading Carrie and Interview with the Vampire, both I really liked. And currently reading Frankenstein.

In addition to my anxiety, I have trouble sleeping. It’s really painful when you can’t sleep. I need to figure out how to soothe my mind. I want to be peaceful.

Anyway I hope everyone has a great day. Get enough sleep and eat healthy!

Update: I’m in the hospital right now because I suffered brain hemorrhage two weeks ago. Fortunately it happened where I work so I could reach the hospital quickly with the help from my colleagues. They saved my life.

I recently left ICU because I got better. Less headache. I eat more now. I can walk… slowly. I’m just glad that I’m alive. 🥲 I think it will take one or two weeks to leave the hospital.

It's already April! waaaat

I've been tweaking Saja's hair(it's a temporary name but it's stuck now lmao) and testing background props to settle on a style that suits me. I want it to look like opera stage design + stop motion background but it's kinda hard to nail the lighting.

I went to an exhibit of 3D character artists last month. One of the artists was my university colleague so it was super inspiring to see her beautiful work presented in a place like this.

And here's a cat that lives near where I work. He's always there... loafing.

Nuri and Eri are now protected under South Korea copyright law! I've always wanted to register my original characters because it feels official. It's finally done. haha It was surprisingly easy to do and the registration fee wasn't so costly.

BTS stuff!

I drew backgrounds like the last time and made branches that look like papercraft. I painted branches in Procreate first and brought them to Houdini to make very thin 3d models that roughly follow the shapes of the branches. And gave them noise displacement! Noise is always the right answer. Then I applied the drawings on the models in Substance Painter.

Blender Studio's recent log videos gave me this papercraft idea. They actually made real papercraft trees and scanned them all! I think that mixing traditional art and digital art like this always gives great results.

They are Nuri and Eri's guardians. Their masks lack colors and expressions compared to Nuri and Eri because they are old.

This is an animal friend for Nuri and Eri. I need a cute name for them... still thinking. hmmm I think I'm just gonna call them 사자 because I'm lazy.

Modeling is the most boring part of 3D. I really want to skip to texturing and lighting! But first I need to give them fur... or clothing. Maybe tomorrow.

Today's work music. 이랑 Lang Lee is my favorite Korean singer-songwriter. Her lyrics are so beautiful and relatable and the way she sings so calmly... almost feels like she doesn't care anymore. But if you listen to the lyrics, she feels pain because she cares so much. I've seen her performing live once and it made me cry inside. 😭

Throwback to the Eternal Ascent 3D Challenge I participated in last year!

I got into the top 100 artist montage for my artwork. I'm really, really proud of it. This was before I left Cinema4D completely for Houdini. You can see below how much I struggled using Houdini back then. (and still struggling but certainly got better!)

pwnisher hosts this 3d community challenge twice a year. If you are a 3d artist, you should definitely give it a try! I learned a lot from this challenge because you are only given a month to complete your art and you can meet lots of 3d artists from all over the world.

I just saw the recent 3d challenge submission got closed. I wish good luck to everyone!

This was the first version of the last artwork I made. It had a warm, cozy vibe with natural lighting but I wanted stronger contrast between light and darkness. I also wanted to practice using only two colors for lighting to make a composition so I discarded all lighting setup and started again. And I replaced Nuri's sketchbook(from Adobe asset) with a model I made because it looked too detailed considering its size compared to Nuri, who is like a mid sized doll in my mind.

At first I used a photograph I took as a background image but it felt limited. So I was like... why not just draw the background?! It was a great excuse to use Procreate.

As an only child I was alone at home most of the time because my parents were both working. I have fond memories of me just drawing and playing by myself. Watching the sun go down, waiting for mom to come home. I wanted to convey the mood from my childhood in this piece. I like how lighting turned out!

I found out that I made a small mistake on the stitch patterns so I fixed it.. It's unnoticeable but if you noticed it, you are very observant!

Eri is always worried about tomorrow. (bottom text translation)

The origin of Eri's name comes from the Korean word 내일(내일이), which means 'tomorrow'. They are the direct opposite of Nuri. Eri is more mature than Nuri and has many thoughts going on in their mind all the time. Very quiet but attentive to what others have to say.

I had several bad anxiety attacks last year and this experience kinda inspired me to make this character who is afraid of tomorrow.

Fun fact : 이리 means 'wolf' in Korean. So I gave them earrings made of fangs!

It was my first time making clothings for a 3d character so there was a lot of trial and error, especially with UVs... 🥲 After vellum sim you can use vellum post-process node for thicken but it kinda messed up the original UVs and made them unusable for Substance Painter so I had to figure out how to clean it up.

What's cool about Substance Painter is that you can easily make embroidery. I don't know how I would have done this without it.
