Time to Review: More Than We Can Tell by Brigid Kemmerer
Goodreads Summary:
Rev Fletcher is battling the demons of his past. But with loving adoptive parents by his side, he’s managed to keep them at bay…until he gets a letter from his abusive father and the trauma of his childhood comes hurtling back.
Emma Blue spends her time perfecting the computer game she built from scratch, rather than facing her parents’ crumbling marriage. She can solve any problem with the right code, but when an online troll’s harassment escalates, she’s truly afraid.
When Rev and Emma meet, they both long to lift the burden of their secrets and bond instantly over their shared turmoil. But when their situations turn dangerous, their trust in each other will be tested in ways they never expected.
Rapid Fire Review
*SCREAMING*
This book is an anxiety NIGHTMARE
The whole thing in this book is that these two kids have very real threats who they cannot see and cannot stop
It made me SO AFRAID for my future children to get on the internet (be careful!!!!!!!!!!!)
The whole time all I could think was TALK TO YOUR PARENTS
I’ve seen other books that says this book is romantic and that might be true
The characters are GREAT wow wow great internal conflicts in addition to the very scary external conflicts
Good writing overall I started reading the companion book Letters to the Lost (which you don’t have to read for this one) (and is much less stressful)
But oh my god hit me up for trigger warnings if you are going to read this
7/10 would read again now that i know how it ends

Pretending to be Erica by Michelle Painchaud
Amazon Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Violet’s entire life has revolved around one thing: becoming Erica Silverman, an heiress kidnapped at age five and never seen again. Violet’s father, the best con man in Las Vegas, has a plan, chilling in its very specific precision. Violet shares a blood type with Erica…[W]hen the time is right, she “reappears”—Erica Silverman, brought home by some kind of miracle. But she is also Violet, and she has a job: Stay long enough to steal the Silverman Painting, an Old Master legendary in the Vegas crime world.
I mean.
It took me a bit to find a summary that didn’t make the book sounds totally ridiculous which could be a bad sign. I picked up this book after spending too much time researching a real and nearly equally fantastical case of Frédéric Bourdin, a French conman pretending to be a missing American teenager.
Violet has been getting groomed to become Erica for years. This included plastic surgery and having a bone broken because Erica had that bone broken too. Despite a faked positive DNA test lots of the characters still doubt that Violet is Erica and a PI is investigating her. Violet has struggling between loyalty to the new who care about her, and Sal, her father figure who expect her to finish the con.
Weirdly this high stakes plot comes off as low stakes and boring. Violet is supossed to be experiencing intense internal conflict but she mostly seems annoyed and bored–and not in a “I’m acting detached to hide how much I care” way. No one is at all likable. There’s a half hearted romantic subplot with a Sad Boy™  but I couldn’t even tell you his name.
The pacing is also kind of wonky. Most of the narrative it is dedicated to Erica/Violet hanging out with her new friends while low key dealing with committing fraud, while the action-y third act happens in was feels like 12 pages then suddenly it’s over.
All this said, I finished this book VERY quickly and stayed up past my grown-up-bedtime to finish it, so it’s got readability going for it.

Takashi Miike (1960 - present) is a highly prolific and controversial Japanese filmmaker. He has directed over seventy theatrical, video, and television productions since his debut in 1991. His films range from violent and bizarre to dramatic and family-friendly. He has since gained a strong cult following in the West that is growing with the increase in DVD releases of his works.
Miike has garnered international notoriety for depicting shocking scenes of extreme violence and sexual perversions. Many of his films contain graphic and lurid bloodshed, often portrayed in an over-the-top, cartoonish manner. Much of his work depicts the activities of criminals (especially yakuza) or concern themselves with non-Japanese living in Japan. He is known for his black sense of humor and for pushing the boundaries of censorship as far as they will go. (x)
