also worth noting that there is currently a loophole in the uk assisted dying bill that enables patients with anorexia nervosa to be eligible for medical assistance in dying. for an illness that is completely treatable.

and before you say “well actually mental illnesses aren’t included in the bill’s definition for terminal illness”, the bill also refuses to acknowledge the physical manifestations of mental illnesses like AN. already we see AN patients being deemed “terminal” or “pre-death stage” as a result of the physical deterioration of the illness, and these patients being denied treatment and placed on palliative pathways. the physical deterioration of the body in AN can make these patients qualify as terminal under the bill’s definition as “inevitably progressive illness… which cannot be reversed by treatment… [for which] death… can reasonably be predicted within six months” (section 2 of the terminally ill adults (end of life) bill).

and in addition, for some fucking reason, despite having tangible evidence of AN patients’ brains being structurally altered by the illness, someone decided that these patients are able to provide informed consent. AN has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, and one of the leading causes of death is suicide. severe malnourishment (like we see in patients with AN) causes cognitive impairment. many AN sufferers are unable to understand the severity of their illness (anosognosia), and though seeming articulate and lucid, may be suffering from brain atrophy, cognitive distortions, reduced executive functioning, and problems with emotional processing. malnourishment fucks your brain up A LOT.

at least 60 patients with AN across belgium, the netherlands, and the US have been assisted in death. a third of these patients were in their teens or twenties. in other words, these vulnerable individuals in need of treatment were assisted in premature death for a treatable illness.

treatment for AN is expensive. many patients will resist treatment as a result of the cognitive distortion and anosognosia experienced in malnutrition, but this doesn’t mean that they are terminal or not worth the resources.

an anorexia diagnosis is not a death sentence.

every AN patient deserves compassion, treatment, and a life in and after recovery.

the assisted dying debate is so crazy

because i do fundamentally believe everyone should have the right to die when they want.

BUT if they legalise assisted suicide in the UK right now i don't trust our ableist fucking government to not just start coercing disabled people into suicide to save money. they already won't give them enough money to live.

I'm writing on behalf of my family, from under the rubble of fear, hunger, and war. Life here has turned into a daily struggle for the most basic things: food, water, safety. We have lost almost everything — and what little remains is far beyond our reach.

There’s no bread, no clean water, no electricity. Medicine is a dream.Even when these essentials appear, they come with prices we simply can’t afford. Imagine going to sleep hungry, waking up to explosions, and wondering if you'll survive the day.

We divide a single meal among us like it’s gold. Some days, we have nothing at all. The fear is constant. The hunger is real. But the hardest part is watching those you love suffer and being unable to help.

He's been active on tumblr for a long while now, and was one of the first to have their campaigns vetted: #4 on the gazavetters list!

Nader and his family have lived through bombs, destruction, hunger, thirst and illness for so long, now. Recently, he was cut off from the rest of world with an internet blackout. Yesterday he nearly died today trying to get food for his family.
