Pro-AI. 70% chance I forgot to reply to you. 20% chance Tumblr won't show me your reply. 10% chance I just don't care anymore. Also gonna be real and say there's like a 85% chance I won't reply if your comment is a reply instead of a reblog because replies are limiting and awful. If I wanted to argue on Twitter, I would.

we do need to revisit the wording of "you can't have your cake and eat it too" because i don't think it clearly enough conveys that it's more that you can't simultaneously retain a cake and also get to consume it (which would render you cakeless). for years i was like But why not....it's my cake....?

If you had told me 10 fucking years ago that, not only would tumblr be my favorite site but that I'd meet people here and talk to them and eagerly wait to hear from them, I'd say you were nuts. Yet here we are.

I feel like we lost the message that being racist meant you were ignorant. Like I swear it used to be that the only reason you were racist was if you held some genuine belief that X race or races were inferior to yours for whatever reason, and that you just didn't know or understand that that wasn't true.
Now it's like if you're racist you must be doing so knowingly and purposefully with malicious intent.
And to their credit, maybe there's something to that thought, since obviously race relations and just how we've come to understand and treat people by their race has come a long long way since Lovecraft's time. In this day and age, there's probably an argument to be made that being racist is certainly a choice you had to make, at least for most.
But I don't think you can retroactively apply that logic to people born during a time where thoughts like that were just the norm. I'm not saying you have to shrug your shoulders and say what they did, said, or thought was okay, but you kind of have to acknowledge that people were literally ignorant to any other possibility back then. Sure, some were absolutely malicious, but even that malintent was likely born of ignorance.
TL;DR: I don't think Lovecraft's racism can be attributed to malintent or personal choice, but instead is just a product of him being raised ignorant of any other belief.
Woodrow Wilson looked like HP Lovecraft and was racist like him, too

I've wondered that as well. The obvious answer I hear occasionally is that they want these companies to donate to LGBT charities, but that also gets accused of being self-serving because they're tax write-offs.
It's this "damned if you do, damned if you stop" mentality, and at this point I really wish businesses would just not show any support ever because in the end it's just better business not to. If they make a big go at support, then they're alienating one group of people for another. And if they ever decide to stop, then the pendulum swings back and now they're alienating the original group instead.
Better to just not do anything from the start, leaving you at least with that vague idea of "maybe they support, or maybe they don't".

Fair weather friends. This could be purely anecdotal ( maybe just my area) but companies felt quieter this year.
It means that society has shifted to a place where it can be risky to launch pride campaigns. They don't want a Bud Light or Target situation like we had last year. By no means do I like rainbow capitalism but these companies pulling out because of "risk management" is scary. I don't want to buy a tacky T-shirt or have their meaningless approval, but I liked the feeling that they felt bold enough to "support" us.
Good riddance, we didn't need those performative companies.

The Incel post you didn’t want to derail… who are the actors?
Not actors, but I was thinking of JK Rowling and Elon Musk.
It wasn't that long ago that both of them were more or less considered respectable people, at least amongst the Left, but because of something they said years ago that pissed off the wrong crowd, after years of incessant bullying combined with them being led purely by their egos invariably made them double down on whatever it was that they said to upset people long ago.
And to be clear, I'm not saying this absolves them or anything, I'm just saying I see why they wound up this way. At the end of the day, their actions are their own, and anyone who is led by their ego probably isn't going to wind up being the most respectable of people.
Hell, you could arguably throw Trump in there as well, since he's most definitely driven by ego more than anything and used to be a Democrat not too long ago.
These people did or said something "bad" years ago and received a ton of backlash for it, and instead of either apologizing, or ignoring the backlash, or even just standing by what they said/did and moving on with their lives, they chose to not just double down, but triple and quadruple down, making whatever that thing was their entire personality. Out of spite, really, but driven by ego.

"It's a MORE than common reaction to being bullied, to say "fuck it" and become what people say you are."
Really makes me think of two relatively famous people that used to be fairly level-headed but are most definitely driven by ego and were bullied into becoming bad people after saying one wrong thing years ago.
But that's unrelated to this post, so I'll leave it at that.
As a certified hater of incel ideology I do not trust Hollywood to handle the topic because they refuse to understand it beyond "conservative sexist jerk" or "men bad".

Am I crazy, I could've sworn Lusamine was redeemed in the end because it was figured out that she was being mind controlled. Doesn't she go with Gladion and Lillie to go find their dad at the end of the series?
Tumblr media
Pictured above: Two antagonists, one male and one female, who are canonically terrible people and massive narcissists that, out of trauma, stress, and a pathological need for control, gets themselves doped up on something (magical force or alien pheromones) that compells them to act in the interest of that something and puts their mind in a more inebriated, unfiltered state that hastens a spiral into total madness, but otherwise does not completely change who they are and they still act as they naturally would, with the inclinations and desires they naturally have, as they gladly sacrifice others to get what they want, prioritizing their personal happiness above all else, to the point where they abuse and try to kill the people they'd loved.
Common fan reaction to the male villain: What happened to him was unfair and the stuff he did wasn't his fault! He was traumatized by losing his home and family in the past, and was being a good king doing what was best for his kingdom before he got pushed too hard by those ingrateful people, and he was posessed by the evil magic in that book! It controlled him and drove him insane, making him do those terrible things! He deserves to be forgiven and redeemed!
Common fan reaction to the female villain: She's a horrible, selfish, monstrous, abusive sociopath bitch who's always been this way and was always going to act in this way! She never loved her family, losing her husband didn't really change her, it just left her alone to reveal her true nature to her kids! And her mind wasn't poisoned by the Ultra Beast to make her obsessed with it, she's just like that on her own 'cause she's a pure evil hellspawn! She should fucking die! She deserves no forgiveness or redemption!
Just something I've noticed. I wish there was more consistency online about these things and less double standards (either they're both tragic and potentially redeemable, or they're both just terrible and better off not redeemed), but that's just not how it seems to go.

Liberals calling out Trump for draft dodging feels a lot like that meme about atheists using religion against the religious despite not believing it themselves.
It's shaming a guy for not doing the thing you definitely weren't going to do either, but because he didn't do it that makes it shameful. But it's not shameful when you do it, of course.

Someone posted a headline the other day that said “hundreds of scholars say we’re heading towards authoritarianism”. And that was it “hundreds of scholars”. No indication as to what they’re scholars of. For all we know, they’re scholars of art history and feminist literature.
When you see “experts” or “scholars” with no added context, you can throw out the entire fucking point because at that point it’s no more or less informed of an opinion than your methed out neighbor.

Having the age-old "should Souls-like games have an easy mode" argument with someone who compared it to "an important building with no ramps or lifts", and asked the question why shouldn't accessibility be legally mandated like it is in real life.
Someone explain to me why Dark Souls is paramount to one's survival? No seriously, tell me why that of all games is the key to life and death; how if you can't play and beat the game, you will magically die on the spot.
It's such a ridiculous analogy, one which I even called them on thinking they'd maybe made it in haste and realized that after the fact, but no, they doubled down and told me the analogy was sound, but provided no argument as to why.
And then he has the gall to call me privileged while he sits there complaining about how he can't play a video game. Like, what the fuck. If anyone is the last person who should be calling others privileged, it's that guy.
No surprise he blocked me, of course lmao.

For as much shit as this game gets, this makes me think of Bioshock Infinite and how we see an interracial couple get shot right at the start. Like I think people forget that it's not just the "bad people" like gays or black people that get punished, it's also the "good people" that supported them that get punished.
If they're on our side, then that's for the better AND the worse.
i think this exchange is important, especially my points on allies, so im posting it separately here
