"Pearl! Look!" Pink's eyes traced the little creature, taking up her whole mind in an instant, as if nothing else mattered. It was- it didn't matter, not really. But it played a part in the web of the Earth, as everything did. As Pink now did. And - as she realised with a start - as did Pearl. However consequential she may find herself being, she was a string now, in this planet's tapestry.

The first book of three in a sprawling tale of the entire Gem War all the way up until Steven's birth, from Pearl's perspective. Welcome to Earth spans from Pearl and Pink first visiting Earth to Pink's first time falling in love with a human, with the first battles of the gem war, the introduction of Garnet and Bismuth and more and many philosophical ramblings in between.

Just a Comet

Greg pulled the window open carefully, quietly, and gently lifted one foot out onto the tree branch. He climbed out all the way, gripping the wood tightly before swinging down and dropping to the ground, and then jumping the fence. Lance would be parked only a few blocks away, waiting for him. Greg’s parents knew the car, and would probably put bars on his window if they ever saw it near their house.

It was cruel, really. It wasn’t like Lance was dangerous, but…

They were going to see a show. It wasn’t like a concert or anything, just some guys doing covers in a warehouse in a nearby neighbourhood, but he was excited. New people, new ideas — his universe was expanding at a breakneck pace.

"Ay Greg, I almost thought you were gonna leave me waiting here."

"Ha, no, just took a while for my parents to hit the hay." Greg opened the car door, climbing into shotgun.

"Hit the-" Lance giggled, "Jesus Greg, you’re so…"

"So what?"

"Unique."

"Hey!" Greg protested, jabbing him with his elbow. Lance leaned over laughing, before starting the engine.

It was a peaceful night, one of those warm ones. The road was easy, with few people out and about on a Wednesday night. "So, how’s home?" There was a quiet buzz in the air.

"You know, same old DeMayo’s." He didn’t want to think about his family. These nights were the few escapes he had from their tight grasp.

Beware the savage jaws, of nineteen eighty four-

Oh. They’d hate that. "I’d love to see the look on mum’s face if she listened to Moonbeam."

Lance leaned back, one hand on the steering wheel. Greg had never seen a cooler person. "Oh yeah?" A sly smile crossed his face, "And what if they met me?"

"Imagine. If they knew I was friends with someone like you, they’d never let me leave the house again."

"Someone like me?"

"You know… Cool. Interesting. They hate that."

Lance studied his face, searching for something he couldn’t seem to find. He let out a stilted breath of laughter and turned back to the road.

"Cool. I like that."

"Yeah. Well, they don’t."

“Could you imagine that running a colony could be this dull?” Pink wasn’t happy. That much was obvious. Pearl had to make her happy;

“I could imagine it, if you would like me to, my Diamond?” Anything she wanted.

But Pink’s eyes dulled. It was what she asked for; ‘Could you imagine…’ But it wasn’t what she wanted. She sighed.

“Show me the status of the Prime Kindergarten.”

“Yes, my Diamond.” Anything she asked.

Pearl placed her hand on the control panel. Her gem buzzed, producing a hologram of the planet in front of her. It was different from when she had last checked it.

“The first Quartz soldiers are due to emerge soon…”

Pink lit up. This was what she wanted.

“Finally, something exciting!” 

Excitement. Pearl took note; that was what Pink Diamond wanted. Maybe if she remembered that, she could make her happy more often.

Pearl walked down the steps one at a time, as was correct. Her Diamond jumped to the bottom, beating her down as she always did. Seconds of excitement. That must be why she did it.
