Piñata Line, Prospect Park, Brooklyn, 2009.
This was at a birthday party in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. The children ironically are waiting patiently on a line for their turn to hit the piñata. All are the children of our friends at the time, most being musicians and artists. I love the mix of friends here, it reminds me of myself growing up in Brooklyn, on Washington Avenue in Clinton Hill. I was the child of two European Pratt students, who sometimes took me with them to their college art courses. I would play on the streets of Clinton Hill and Bed Stuy, with my friends of all different ethnic backgrounds. – This photograph is available through the rewards in my Kickstarter as a signed 8” x 10” with a copy of the book WONDERLAND, 11” x 14” or 16” x 20” limited edition print.

– Only 2 more weeks left! 🚀 Be a part of the Journey! Please support my Kickstarter campaign by pre-ordering a copy of the book or grabbing a limited-edition print to help make this book a reality! I need your support to make the book happen. 📕

I wanted to share the good news with you! Kickstarter has selected WONDERLAND: 2007 - 2023 as a "Project We Love" which is their way of highlighting brilliant examples of creativity and they will feature the campaign across Kickstarter. I’m thrilled!!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/valeryrizzo/wonderland-brooklyn-2007-2023
I’d like to explain some of the reasons why a photographer might use Kickstarter to fund the publication of their photography book. Kickstarter is a platform that helps bring creative projects to life! It’s where creators share new visions for creative work with the communities that will come together to fund them. For it to be successful I need to reach my goal.
Producing a fine art photography book, a monograph, is expensive. I’m crowdfunding for half of what it costs to actually produce and publish the book. The costs of paper, ink, binding, quality printing and distribution grows each year and it is nearly impossible to fund the book through sales alone.
For independent book publishers to stay afloat they ask their artists to underwrite those costs. In return photographers, like myself, need to turn to a platform like Kickstarter which gives us the ability to offer backers of the project advanced sales of the book, limited edition prints and other creative offerings so that we might subsidize the cost of publishing.
It’s a dream of mine to have this book, my baby, published by Kehrer Verlag in Germany, but why publish a book if it's so expensive? A photo book, a monograph of one’s photographs pushes an artist's career to the next level and lives on past the artist themselves. It's also your largest calling card and a work of art on its own. It can be held and experienced from beginning to end, with the turn of each page. I’d like to share that with all of you and the rest of the world, in my lifetime.
We have 21 days to go and we are at 17% of our goal. Please see the Kickstarter link to learn more about the book and the rewards I’m offering in return for your pledge. Your support would mean so much to me and it would make the publication of this book possible!

It’s with great excitement that I share the news about my upcoming monograph “Wonderland: Brooklyn 2007-2023” that will be published by Kehrer Verlag later this year. The book comprises photographs I made with plastic toy cameras in Brooklyn during the years of 2007 -2023 with a foreword by award-winning photographer Claudio Edinger and an essay by Colin Spoelman, co-founder and distiller at Brooklyn’s Kings County Distillery. This is a project very near and dear to me as a native Brooklynite and something I’ve been working on for over 15 years. - Today I also announce the launch of my Kickstarter campaign! which I hope you will consider supporting to help raise funds to make the book a reality. If you’d like to be a part of that, or are interested in hearing more please click the Kickstarter link. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/valeryrizzo/wonderland-brooklyn-2007-2023 The campaign offers pre-orders of the book, limited edition prints, photowalks and more in return for your participation. Please also feel free to share this post with friends and colleagues! _ 😘 Very special heartfelt thanks to my early supporters: Barbara Rivolta, Rossana Rizzo, Amy Touchette, Deborah Rogers, Kelly Jones, Michael Mullen, Angela Mirro, Isaiah Whisner, Kathi Conway, Shanti Beckman, Herb Edwards, Lillia Frantin, Eva Cruz, Bethseye, Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley, Joanna Tallantire, Michelle Filigno, Amena Mitchell.
