It was a calm Friday evening at the DX. Soda was standing outside, chatting with Dallas, who dropped his car off before the movies, and Steve was desperately trying to fix it on time. Dally was annoyed, didn't listen much, he only talked.
"This fucking car broke down, and I also have to pay rent this month..."
Yeah, Soda understood. As the years went by, the gang grew, but their problems grew too; practically all Greasers were in debt because of the fights and the police, plus Darry stopped one of his jobs because he got a girlfriend, which of course, was good news but without his job, Soda couldn't even take a break from his own.
Dally was always in debt, and most of the time, all his talks were complaints. Johnny and Ponyboy were the only ones who yet had some fun from time to time; the rest of them had to work. And sometimes fight, like they always did, because it made them who they were.
It was the night before the weekend, so the three Greasers were vigilant. They waited for one of the sides to light up the fire, but this time things went on differently.
A Mustang arrived from the West side. Steve stopped what he was doing, Dallas lit up a cigarette, and Soda tried to listen carefully.
"I can't deal with you no more!"
The guy who was driving the car sounded unknown to them β but he looked just like one of the Socs.
"Are they lost or something?" Steve rolled his eyes while Dally and Soda suspiciously followed the car with their eyes.
The car stopped, and the girl opened the door of the passenger's seat. When she got out of the car, all of the attention was on her. Soda felt starstruck for the first time in ages; he saw a lot of Greaser girls, some Soc's girls coming to the DX to see him and had no particular thoughts about them, but he knew that this one was a lucky charm.
"I'll take the luggage out of the car, it's going to take a while." The dark-haired guy warned her.
She was wearing an unusual dress, even if Soda never really paid that much attention to that kind of stuff. It was light pink, what was it, tulle? Or something expensive, something that rich or extravagant people wore, something that wasn't common at all in their side of the town, not at the DX. She looked overdressed; she had long hair, it was very straight, icy blonde that made her blue eyes stand out.
"Damn," Dallas said, inspecting her from head to toe, "Where are you headed to, kitten?"
Steve smirked, looking at her kitten heels (yes, Dallas knew more than both of them how rich people dressed), but Soda couldn't even dare to smile. He instantly felt weird; he felt so hot in his blue shirt, even though it was already past 9 p.m.
"Excuse me, may I use the restroom?" she completely ignored Dallas, glancing at him with disapproval, and addressed the question to Soda, who took it very personally.
"Yes, of course, follow me" Soda tried to hide his vivid emotions by smiling, making it look like it was nothing special.
She walked inside the station, filling the room with her floral perfume.
"Soda?"
"Huh?"
"That is your name?"
Her voice was sharp and gave Soda chills. He tried to play it soft, he tried to squeeze out a smile, but he felt unwell. Was she a Soc? His eyes inspected her; he once again remarked that her dress wasn't cheap and noticed on her neck a lustrous pearl necklace that lay on her bare skin. No, Soda had already been chased by Soc's girls, but he heard the tiny notes of an accent hiding between her English. She was a foreigner.
"Yes"
Suddenly both of them heard loud noises; Steve and Dally were arguing with the guy that got out of the car, and in addition to that, a few more cars pulled up to the DX. Soda looked outside to be sure of what was happening β indeed, the Socs had arrived.
Soda looked out of the window and saw the man approach Dallas and Steve.
"Stay here, and don't call the police."
Feeling some kind of heroism, Soda was about to exit, but another two cars pulled up β Mustangs too; the Socs were pulling to the DX; they had been searching to fight.
Luckily the Greasers weren't alone; Two-Bit, who knew that the Socs were planning on fighting them, alerted some other Greasers just in time.
The one that shouldn't have been neglected on that Friday night was Dallas. He knew exactly how to pay his rent the moment he saw her arrive. Dally had a better perception of life outside town than Soda or even the oldest of them, Two-Bit or Darrel, and had a better idea of this girl's possible background - that jewelry was the proof.
The men, or the boys as she thought, were so brutally involved in their fight that she could've seen the pleasure and passion in their eyes as they smashed each other's heads against any object they saw. She ended up being on the ground herself as someone had pushed her.
"My darling, we have to get you out of here."
Dallas helped her to get up, but she could barely stand. He took advantage of it by grabbing the suitcase that was next to the car and tore off the necklace on her neck, and put it in his jeans pocket. He had to pay his rent. He grabbed her arm and started walking towards the car. She was unpleasant and looked askance at him as his cologne was mixed with cigs, and his face looked dirty.
"If you behave, nothing will happen to you," he said, opening the back door of her car βthe audacity.
She didn't say much, but her face said it all. She knew deep inside that screaming would have done no good as the fight continued; that was not when she would've gained any attention.
"Oh, you're bleeding, doll." Dallas said as he started to drive, looking in the mirror.
"What?!" the anxiety suddenly came to her, and the feeling of dizziness took over her.
Dallas pulled into Curtis's neighborhood and saw that he was already followed by Steve. Was the fight over already?
Soda got out of the car and ran to see Dallas.
"The fight is already over?" Dallas joked as he stepped out of his car.
"The hell are you doing, Dally?" Soda asked, peeking inside the window. The girl was lying on the back seat, bleeding.
"Are they calling the police?"
"Not for now, but they sure will," said Steve, looking inside the window too. The door of the Curtis house opened, and Ponyboy and Johnny came running to see what was going on.
"Should we take her inside? She's bleeding a little, she fell." Dallas tried to explain casually, starting to feel guilt building up inside of him.
"Yeah, that's better." Soda agreed, opening the door, "Ponyboy, is Darry home?"
"He's taking a nap."
"Thank God."
It was better if Darry wouldn't know that there was a fight at the DX; there was nothing worse than losing Ponyboy and having Soda fired from his job. But again, Soda knew that he had to let him know.
Soda gently picked her up and carried her in the bridal style. His warm hands were placed between the chic fabric and her cold but soft skin.
"We look like criminals right now," said Ponyboy, opening the gate for Soda.
"Who's the girl? She looks odd," asked Johnny, following Pony inside the house.
The place where he wanted to put her was taken by Darry, who was taking a nap with his legs stretched out on the couch. He was missing something, for sure.
All the gang entered the house, and it became crowded, but the only person Soda needed was Darry at that exact moment. He was his big brother; he would've known what to do.
"Darry, wake up!" Ponyboy playfully punched his brother.
Darry didn't really react at first, but then he opened his eyes and quickly stood up. "What is going on?! What have you done?"
"Darry, please calm down," Soda said as he was trying to put her in the armchair.
"Did you shoot her with your car?!" his older brother was freaking out.
"No. I was working" Soda decided to start slowly.
"Great start," Darry was disappointed, Soda saw it in his eyes. "It's better to put her in your room. And come back to explain."
Soda went to his room, gently carrying the girl. While entering the room, he tried to see if it was somehow clean, and luckily it was. He carefully placed her on the bed and her head on top of his pillow. She was probably unconscious; he checked her pulse several times to make sure that she was alive, being very paranoid.
"Darry, don't be mean to him. It's not his fault," Dallas said as he was leaning on the door frame. "Look, he was fixing my car, and then she came with a man, he wasn't a Soc, but then they arrived...."
"Who was he?"
"No idea"
"Weird. Continue."
"Socs arrived shortly, I think it was planned," Dallas tried to elaborate. "There were only us three β Steve, Soda, and me at first, so I put her in the car and drove her here so that it could stop the fight."
"It worked?" Darrel looked at Soda, who came back into the living room.
"It did," Soda said quietly, looking negatively at Dallas, who started to lie.
"We have to pray that they don't call the police on us," Darrel sighed. "And if she doesn't wake up in the next five minutes, we have to take her to the hospital."
"Everyone out, it's better." Dallas ordered, "We have to go and watch out for any visitors."
When Ponyboy and Johnny left, Dallas rushed to Soda's and Ponyboy's room to look closer at her. Soda felt as if something was wrong; he felt terrible for Dallas approaching after him, probably scaring her to death.
Darrel went to get some band-aids from the storage.
"It must've been the blood that knocked her out, she must be afraid of it," Dallas said out loud.
"I'm not," she muttered as she slowly opened her eyes and started looking around. She suddenly sat up and touched her face. "Wait, what?!"
"I'll get you some water." Dally rolled his eyes.
"I don't need no water, I need a mirror."
"Come with me." She followed him to the bathroom, where she finally saw her reflection.
"Oh no, no, no." she started to comb her hair with her hand to see where she was bleeding, and mostly, she tried to hide it.
"Don't worry, doll, you still got all the charm." Dallas said as he looked in the mirror with her.
She turned her head and gave him the coldest, deadliest stare. Her mixed emotions, her dizziness, and her fear were seen by both Soda and Darrel, who stood in the corridor.
"Dallas, please come with me," Darrel said as he brought the band-aids and the aid kit.
"Fine," he answered emotionlessly and walked away past Soda, not looking at him.
"It doesn't look bad at all." Soda tried to cheer her up, you can hide it with your hair."
"You think it's noticeable?" she was starting to tear up, and Soda saw it.
"No, not at all. We need to clean it up a little bit, and it's good to go." Soda said as he stood right next to her, "You are going to call on us?"
"I have better things to do." She said, looking at herself in the mirror, "But tell me what happened."
"The Socs started a fight, you fell, and Dallas took you to our place."
"The Socs?"
"They areβ"
"That's not how it went." She said as she cleaned her wound, "I remember what he told me."
"Who? Dallas?"
"He told me that if I would behave, then I would be safe." She finally looked at him, "Maybe I should call the police on you; you are right."
"I'm sure he just didn't want you to run away and hurt yourself even more. We don't do anything bad to those who don't deserve it."
She stayed quiet.
"He doesn't seem to be a nice person, who is he?" Soda asked about the guy, trying to get some answers.
"I don't want to talk about it. But I'd like to make a phone call."
She was the diamond in the room. Johnny and Ponyboy were silently sitting next to Dally on the couch, who was smoking and observing every move that she made while being on the phone. He watched out for every gesture, not taking her eyes off her.
Soda, who stood in the door frame, saw Dally's observations, as he didn't even bother to look at him. Soda was also attracted to that diamond that filled their Greaser's house with light. Diamond... Soda looked at her feet - bare. Where were her shoes?
Suddenly, Soda realized what it was all about. He looked at her neck - it was missing something, and Dallas knew exactly what it was.
Soda was beyond mad at Dallas, and in addition to that, he couldn't even catch his attention.
She was calling her parents.
"Hello, who is this?"
"Mom, it's me, Natalie."
"Oh dear, I was so worried. James is in the hospital right now, his mother told me. She didn't know where you were; we wanted to call the police."
"No, it's fine, I'm in a hotel nearby. I just wanted to get some rest; I feel tired and worried. I shall call you back."
"We'll see you tomorrow morning at the hospital then."
"We can't let her go out. It's too dangerous, we can't even drop her off, she probably lives on the West side, it's not going to end well for us if we go at night," Ponyboy whispered to Dallas.
"Yeah, you'll have to convince her to stay."
"She can't leave, she doesn't have her shoes on." Soda snapped at Dallas, lowering his voice.
"Relax, they are in my car."
"You have some explaining to do," Soda warned him, taking a seat next to him.
"Not right now, let me admire."
"I feel too dizzy to go anywhere right now," she said as she hung up, trying to sit comfortably, "Can someone bring me a glass of water?"
Ponyboy stood up to grab her some as he felt excited for her to stay - it's been a long time with no girls in the house. Darry didn't bring his girl very often, and it seemed that Soda hadn't fully healed from Sandy.
"Where are my shoes?" she looked at Dallas with disgust.
"In my car, you should go grab them, you'll have to walk a long way home." his answer was very dry, and Soda knew that he wasn't pleased that she wasn't all over him.
"Don't worry, you can stay here, we owe you." Ponyboy said as he brought her water, "I'm Ponyboy, Soda's and Darrel's brother, this is our house."
"Thank you for clarifying." she smiled at Ponyboy.
"Come talk outside." Dallas said to Soda as he stood up from the couch and walked closer to the guest, "I said come get your shoes."
"Come here for a second," she called him. Dallas was instantly going crazy, he approached her, and she whispered in his ear, "I think it's time forΒ youΒ to leave."
They both looked with hatred at each other.
