All Things Fanfic (2.0)

A few years ago, I shared an in-depth questionnaire for fanfic readers & writers to help gather insight into our amazing community, and now it’s back and better than ever with new questions and some necessary inclusion updates!

This updated version is designed to collect responses (all anonymous of course) and create helpful stats about reader & writer preferences. Majority of questions apply to fanfic in general (no specific area) so you can participate no matter what fandom you're a part of.

update about the ao3 ai scrape situation & how to check if your fic(s) were involved

it sounds like the databases that were originally uploaded are currently disabled, but the scraper has been reuploaded them / selling them elsewhere (view linked posts below for more info)

now here's the tricky part. if your content was already scraped there's not much that can be done, but you can protect them from future scrapes by locking them (post 1 explains how to do this in ao3 settings)

however, this limits unregistered users from being able to read your fics without an account and removes your content from being found via engine searches. it's also not guaranteed that locking them won't be scraped as the scraper could make an account anyway if they're truly that dedicated.

it's up to you to decide the pros and cons of whether or not you want to lock them. for me, i crosspost on several sites (tumblr, ao3, wattpad, asian fanfics) so even if i lock my fics on ao3, who's to say that one of the other places doesn't get scraped next :')

regardless, i think having all the information is important, so if you want to check your own fics & their ID tags i would recommend it. idk what you can do with the information knowing it was scraped, but i think it's still good to know.

when you open one of your ao3 fics and the ID tag (the numbers at the end of the url) is less than 63200000, then it was one of the many that were scraped and uploaded for ai training purposes

15 of my 21 fics fell into this category, which for me was everything i had posted from august 2023 - february 2025. i was on a writing hiatus for a good chunk of 2024 so i wasn't hit as hard as my fellow mutuals who've had 50+ scraped but i hate to see this happen at all.

and i really don't like that these scrapers are making money from us by compiled our content that they turned into a database to sell to these these sites that are training their ai models for text generation and image generation, when we are writing it for FREE and sharing fandom content for FREE for other fans to enjoy. that really irritates me.
