Maggie is the Rolls Royce of actors, and the only challenge (as a director) is to understand the power and brilliance you have at your disposal. She is the supreme mistress of tone, able to modulate within a paragraph from high comedy to emotional verisimilitude to stark tragedy; her thought processes are so highly articulated that a moment’s mental connection will take her to places undreamt of by most actors, and her ability to conjure up pictures for the audience as she speaks is the glorious source of her comedy. Everything Maggie Smith is as an actor, I should wish to be.
