Starting off strong: Rui doesn’t notice this at first

You two start off as friends, slowly hanging out more and more after practices

He just felt so seen when you went out of your way for him

Rui forgot his water? You aren’t thirsty anymore

He needs help on his homework? Suddenly afternoon plans are gone!

Rui felt special. He loved it. Couldn’t go a day without it

Then he noticed how much you’d do for the others. Sometimes at the same time as helping him

That’s when he started to realize that you would prioritize everyone else instead of yourself

Instead of asking for help, he started asking if he could help you

Sometimes if he bought lunch for himself he’d buy something extra to give to you

He gets worried. Especially when the both of you officially get together

Rui will let you “help” with his inventions (he’s got it all covered) just to see the smile on your face

He doesn’t mind when the others ask you for help, but if they start taking advantage of it he won’t be afraid to step in

(Once had to tell Tsukasa off because no way you were going to spend an entire day going through lines with him)

((He got jealous. But that’s another story))

Will do your small tasks. Sometimes you don’t even notice. He’s really doing his best to make sure that you aren’t burning yourself out

WILL call you out if you don’t take care of yourself

Overall, he really cares about your well being. He’ll try and steer you away from this habit of yours, but only when it’s detrimental to your mental health

The past week has been confusing, draining, and overall shit. You took the day off from helping the troupe, which you normally don’t do as it feels sucky to ditch, to work on your overdue assignments. Then, there’s the haunting thoughts of the director himself. The way he had stepped in between you and that creep that one night still lingers at the forefront of your mind. His hand on your waist, the slight growl in his voice when–

Homework.

You groan and shove the heavy mathematics textbook shut, the loose-leaf paper filled with scribbles and sad attempts sticks out slightly. The only thing keeping you sane right now is your Lana playlist. The weight of that party’s events has been holding you down. Right after the whole incident occurred, Rui just went back to normal. Didn’t talk about the fact that he pretended to be your boyfriend. Didn’t talk about how his personality flipped. Didn’t talk about the obvious tension between you two now. It bothered you immensely, so much that you went to An and ranted about your troubles to her over a coffee. She said the same thing your other friends said: talk to him. 

“That’s a lot harder to do than it sounds like, An.” You had said while distracting yourself with a sip of the hot latte.

“It’ll make you feel better. And have you ever thought about why this bothers you so much?”

“What?”

An sighs but leans forward, her chin resting on the palm of her hand, and a small smirk appears on her face. “Why would Rui pretending to be your boyfriend, holding you oh so close, then acting like he nothing happened bother you?”

“Stop implying what I think you’re implying.” She shrugs and then leans back against the seat again. “Just think about it.”

There’s no way in the entire universe that you could have feelings for Rui Kamishiro. He’s practically a coworker. A friend that you wouldn’t gossip with or rant to. He’s just Rui. A simple man with a slightly unhinged personality.

So why does he feel so highlighted in your mind?

You pause Spotify and swipe into your rhythm game that took the stress off of your mind, and the custom focus status you had set up appears as active. Studying wasn’t going to happen, and you sure as hell didn’t want to go out with any of your friends today, so rotting away playing a game would have to do. 

That’s why you fail to see the text nofiication when you enter the game.

Time passes quickly and you’ve used up all your bonus energy on a few favorites. With a sigh, you exit the game and turn your phone off, tossing your headphones onto the bed for dramatic effect. It’s eighteen hundred and due to your parents working late, you could either scavenge ingredients or go grab some ramen from the nearby convenience store.

It’s obvious what anyone would do. 

Your shoes slide on easily and you grab your keys and wallet, phone stationed in your back pocket for easy access. The door locks behind you but you don’t get far down the sidewalk when you crash into something. 

Or, someone.

You look up and see familiar purple hair looming over you, an anxious feeling settling in your gut at the same time a fluttering one appears. Even your body was confused about how to feel about Rui. 

“You never skip out on our brainstorming sessions,” He crosses his arms before raising a hand to cup his chin in a questioning manner.

“My studies…” You didn’t sound very convincing, not even to yourself.

He sighs and runs a hand through his hair. “Was it something I did? Did I finally manage to scare you off like everyone else?” His voice is teasing and playful, but when you look into his capturing eyes you can see the pain. The remainder of his childhood. How he thinks every relationship he has will end.

“What? No!” The words leave quicker than you would have liked them to. “I just–”

“You just?” 

A raindrop hits your scalp first, then lands on your shoulders in faster successions. The both of you don’t seem to mind the sudden change of weather. 

“You confused me, okay?” There it is, the admittance.

“How?” 

Does he really not get it? Then you laugh to yourself realizing that men just don’t.

“How would you feel if I had made you feel all these wonderful and confusing things in the span of a few minutes, and then completely disregard it all without an explanation?” 

He thinks for a moment. “I suppose I’d find myself in your situation.”

“Exactly. Rui, you…” The words don’t come naturally and you struggle to hide around the truth. The truth that you had just discovered. The truth is that you had feelings beyond friendship for him.

At this point, the rain had started to drench your hair and shirt. Rui’s jacket weighed down on him heavily, but he didn’t care. His focus and attention were plastered on you.

“Why did you do it?”

“Because I couldn’t let that asshole ruin your night like that.”

If you say this, it’s all laid out. If you say this, the conversation may go down a different route. “Then why pretend to be my date? Or boyfriend? Or whatever the hell you did!” 

He freezes and a few droplets of water run down his face like makeshift tears. He blinks. “That bothered you?”

“Of course it did! You can’t just play with a girl’s feelings like that. Throw her into days of goddamn emotional turmoil and–” 

Within a moment he steps forward to close the distance between you two. His hand tenderly comes down to hold your chin, pointing your face to look at his. 

“You’ve been avoiding me because you have feelings for me?”

“Yes.”

He almost chuckles but spares you the embarrassment. “You’re a fool.” 

But then he kisses you and it feels like the world exploded. All the confusion, all the turmoil, gone in an instant. Rui Kamishiro didn’t just leave you confused, he left you breathless.

It started off with innocent glances that you could only pass off as observing. It hadn’t bothered you that someone seemed to occupy their eyes on you as it felt harmless. A man across the room was swirling his glass around in his hand, watching as the liquid topples around the sides, while having his gaze linger on you.

Tsukasa had invited the troupe to his after-party with his acting class to celebrate a great show, and naturally, you got to come along. At this point it felt as if you were an honorary member, occasionally helping to polish off scripts and brainstorm plots with their director, but you weren’t much of an actor yourself. The troupe mingles amongst themselves until Rui branches off first, choosing to make conversation with one of the professionals to gain some insight into his own skills. Nene clings to your side knowing you aren’t the type to butt into a conversation like the others. You accept a beverage generously offered by the class and are pleased to find it’s tart cherry sparkling water. 

“If Tsukasa wasn’t having the time of his life with his classmates I think I would go congratulate him,” You speak to Nene first, breaking the slightly awkward silence between the two of you. 

“He’ll come around eventually,” She replies, “he can never get too much attention.”

You laugh lightly and drink more of the water, the aftertaste leaving you thirsty from the tartness. It felt wrong to be standing silent in the middle of the room, or maybe it was the social anxiety creeping up to make you question yourself.

“Should we introduce ourselves around? Join one of the others?” 

Emu seemed to be having the time of her life. The girl was laughing with the actor who starred as Wendy and appeared to be doing fine on her own. Rui looked intrigued by his conversation with an older, wise-looking man. No doubt he was gaining critical information he could use for the next performance. 

“I’m going to head to the restrooms,” Nene announces and points down the hallway. 

“I’ll wait.”

She seemed pleased by your words and offered a small smile and nod before departing. Staying true to your word, you stayed put and occasionally sipped on the beverage until the glass was empty. You make a mental note to grab a refill before everyone leaves.

“What is a fine girl like you doing alone in a place like this?” 

You flinch slightly, not expecting a deep voice to be right next to your ear. Nonetheless, you keep your cool appearance and turn around, not entirely surprised to see your not-so-secret admirer from earlier. Choosing to ignore his rather sexual comments, you take a steady step back to gain some distance. 

“I’m with my friends, actually. One of them was in the play.”

“I don’t see anyone with ya. I won’t abandon ya like they did.” 

His smirk is lopsided in a dark way, a grin full of malice. Alarms immediately set off in your body, but it wasn’t like you could do much against him, and he knew that. Your eyes search and search but you’ve lost sight of Rui, and you can’t exactly turn around to quickly spot the others. 

Where is Nene? Can’t she hurry up just this once?

“I’m not interest, sorry.”

Apologizing made you feel icky inside, but it’s best to seem polite and not to provoke a man like him. 

“Oh come on. What are you, a student?”

Lie. 

“A graduate.” You say curtly.

“I don’t believe that.” 

You want to crawl into a hole and die to cleanse yourself of the ick this man gives you. He senses your unease and knows that he has the advantage.

Where did everyone go?

“Why don’t we…” He steps closer, a smell of cigarettes and alcoholic makes you almost gag, “have some fun?” 

“I’m–” You swallow.

“Ah, dearest! There you are,” A firm hand wraps around your waist and pulls you close. “I was wondering where you had run off to.” 

A flood of sweet vanilla fills your nostrils and easily combats the foul scent of the creep. The moment the scent settled you knew who it was and calmed down. 

Is this the game we’re playing? You shoot the question silently with a pointing gaze. His cheshire smile says enough.

“I was waiting for our friend,” You don’t dare say her name, just in case. “She should be on her way back anytime now.”

Rui nods in understanding and turns his attention to the creep. His gaze locks, his eyes narrow, and if looks could kill, the creep would be in the deepest pit of hell.

“Have a kick out of making my girl uncomfortable during a celebration as lively as this?”

You hate to admit it, but hearing that term of endearment stirs something inside of you. Was it adoration? Gratefulness? It couldn’t possible be anything more, now that would be troublesome, wouldn’t it?

“She’s yours? I’m sorry, didn’t know, dude.”

A look of disgust crosses your friend’s face before the creep’s words even burn into your mind.

“She isn’t just an object to lay claim to,” His grip on your waist tightens, and you don’t think he even realizes. “She’s her own person. A smart, independent, and fucking capable woman.”

Damn. If you hadn’t had any sort of feelings for Rui before, you certainly do now. No one has defended you with such passion and demand before. It felt nice. Validating. 

“You–” The creep points a finger and tries to step closer to the two of you, but Rui is quick to shut that attempt down. He pulls you slightly behind him, and by now the attention of others has been attracted. 

“I suggest you stand down,” Rui smirks and plays with a pen he had been holding to take notes in his pocket notebook. He always insisted on bringing it wherever because 'you never know when inspiration may strike'. “Wouldn’t want to cause a scene now would we?”

The creep grumbles and contemplates his options. It wasn’t looking good for him, and the troupe had gathered behind you and Rui to back him away even more. He seems to decide you weren’t worth the wrath of the man protecting you and backs away, leaving the venue with a pissed off attitude. 

“You’re okay?” Rui’s persona switches around completely. His once malicious-laced words are now soft and cushion any hurt that creep may have inflicted. 

“I’m okay.”

He smiles and his hand draws back. Your waist feels oddly cold now. And just like that, everything goes back to normal.

You and rui met through school, sitting next to each other meant being partners for a lot of assignments

At first you struggled to talk to him. There was something intimidating about his presence, even if he’s one of the sweetest people in school

He definitely sensed your hesitance, so he’d make more effort to talk to you and even help with anything you’re struggling with

Eventually you warmed up to him and realized he really wasn’t as scary as he seems

You both traded numbers and started talking a lot more

When he found out he was pretty much your only friend he was really confused

He isn’t a stranger to the loneliness you feel and vows to help you get through your social anxiety

What doesn’t help either is your clumsiness. Sometimes during class you’ll knock something off your desk, causing your classmates to turn their heads towards you

Rui will pick up the item for you with a smile and reassure you. After you two get together, he will either hold your hand and rub your knuckles with his thumb, or leave his hand on your knee

When hanging out in public he will automatically talk for you

For example when you have your weekly icecream dates he’ll ask what you want and immediately order for you. You’ll never have to ask for him to do this

He wants a kiss for being the best boyfriend

When you told him you wanted to meet his group, he was ecstatic

WXS treats him amazingly, so he knew you wouldn’t be an exception

It was pretty nerve wracking, and he understands, but he’s with you every step of the way

Whenever you start feeling overwhelmed he’ll wrap his arm around you and gently rub your shoulder, whispering something in your ear to make you laugh, and attempt to get you out of that situation. If he can’t, he’s holding you the entire time (unless you don’t want him to)

Rui will never push your feelings aside, he understands and will do everything he can to make you comfortable

you always bake him a little something for dessert. either brownies or cookies, and depending on the season you’ll decorate them accordingly

makes his heart beat so fast. he fell in love with you even more

eating lunch with you on the rooftops is his new favorite activity, he never expected to be this excited to receive his food but now he can’t go back

his mom felt bad and made him bring you something💀

you guys make them together sometimes, and rui isn’t that bad of a cook surprisingly

he will write those cheesy “have a good day i love you darling” notes and stick them in your bento

even if the food looks a lil…questionable…it still tastes amazing and was made with love. he tried his best ok

it really isn’t much, but to rui having someone constantly caring for him enough to set time out of their day to cook for him really means a lot. he’s yours now, you’re stuck with him
