This is the last module I will be positng about! A little infographic highlighting some of the content and tools coverd in CEID100. Being heavily interested in technology and the components which involve social media, the course was highly engaging and interesting to participate in.

HTML code is something I was planning to learn on my own this summer and I’m glad I was able to start doing so within the course curriculum. I always had plans but never went through with actually taking the time to learn HTML. I tried a different resource previously to attempt to learn the language but found codeacademy to be more engaging and fun especially seeing my changes and website come to life.

Misinformation - https://www.influencerintelligence.com/blog/zh/instagram-takes-a-stand-against-dietox-culture
Misinformation relates to content which does not mean any ill intent but is not correct or fully accurate. Misinformation can create plenty of issues when it is disseminated to a broad audience especially if they are young and influential. Girls and women alike already face many body image issues with the amount of photoshopped and edited media creating unrealistic expectations for beauty standards. The promotion of Fit Teas and diet suppressing lollipops the Kardashians like to promote promise easy weight loss. This, however, is not the case as many of the products are in fact natural laxatives and there is no such thing as easy weight loss since it takes plenty of time and effort to correct one's diet, sleep and exercise.
Disinformation - https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/foreign-disinformation-social-media-campaigns-linked-to-falling-vaccination-rates/
As some parts of the world begin the return to normal life pre-pandemic, many will remember the hard work put into developing the vaccine allowing us to return to this state. This, however, did not stop thousands from spreading disinformation online directly harming the rate at which vaccinations were administered. Disinformation refers to information that was purposely falsified and or fabricated for the purpose of harm. As disinformation about the side effects of the vaccine, its effectiveness and its legitimacy were disseminated among other things, it decreased the number of people who would get vaccinated. It should be noted that this doesn’t only apply to the COVID-19 vaccines but to others such as smallpox, and measles among others as well.
Mal-information - https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/ive-seen-how-institutions-protect-men-accused-of-abuse-heres-what-we-can-do/2018/12/18/71fd876a-02ed-11e9-b5df-5d3874f1ac36_story.html
A popular court case that has been trending recently involving Amber Heard and Johnny Depp has procured a large following of the trial. Mal-information relating to information which isn’t inherently wrong but is distributed with the intent of harm is one of the main causes of the trial. As the verdict was reached on Tuesday in Johnny Depp's favour, it is valid to say that this article heavily affected Johnny's career and reputation. Although there may have been some truth to Ambers's statements, she ultimately defames Johnny in the article by stating things he didn’t necessarily do by creating elaborate wording.

Cookies!? That’s one unsightly internet treat Having used the internet for many years of my life, I have only just now realized and learned the full extent of cookies and how they impact my internet browsing. As there were no warnings or pop-ups prompting to specify cookies beforehand, I thought this was something new when they started appearing. Introduced in the 1990s, HTML cookies have become a large part of internet advertising allowing data brokers to access your personal information based on the website you visit to understand your needs. A simple banner adverstisment could’ve gotten 44% clicks vs 0.5% in todays internet age. This was developed to make advertisement less intrusive and annoying but to try and cater more to the people and make it seem almost more convenient given that before. Especially when the item you’ve been needing or thinking about magically pops up whenever you need it. Once downloading the disconnect plugin, I was shocked to find just how much third-party websites would have access to my information about how I am visiting a particular site. Despite this, I should have expected it as I personally have experienced very convenient advertisement and it is interesting to finally confirm the reason for such. Recently I started looking for a tattoo artist that can do coloured floral work in Toronto on my Google search. The next day my Instagram feed would be full of every other sponsored post mentioning a new tattoo artist coming to Toronto as a guest and who has openings. It’s almost crazy to think how far data brokers managed to do and how influential even the smallest search can now be on your social media feeds. snack!

Elon Musk, a popular entrepreneur, has recently become a figure of attention given his recent activity on social media. He set out to purchase the popular social media platform Twitter and there have been various public statements in regards to this. Regardless, Elon does not seem to care if at all but even more so is creating more tweets to add and engage more individuals in discussion. I neither support nor reject his actions but am interested in viewing what is happening on the sidelines as I believe this may create different ways in which individuals curate their content. Many have already abandoned the platform in protest of this new ownership by him however, given the sheer size of the platform not everyone is ready to completely jump ship. It is sometimes uncanny to think that an individual of such status is tweeting things you would expect to find someone random to just say, or more so “shitposts”. What he has been saying online is highly uncommon for an individual of his influence, as he also commonly chooses not to follow netiquette guidelines. Often dismissing others' opinions, he uses Twitter more like a personal account and does not create a distinction between a professional and a personal account. The post pictured in particular gives rise to interesting conversations as to how far a joke can really go. Given in the context of social media, Elon Musk really did start creating his own unique platform by purchasing it and giving him the possibility to himself to create his own rules.

When reading about the impacts of self-branding and creating content, the first thing that came to mind was a food account that I run with my friends. Ever since Toronto Metropolitan University opened up for in-person courses, my friends and I found that we often eat out yet fail to remember how much we spent and enjoyed the food. Given that we three are all active on social media, we had our fair share of encounters with “food bloggers” who review food and visit many different cafes, restaurants and bistros to state their opinion on the place. They are creating a unique branding for themselves while also keeping a professional image up, given that they require partnerships to facilitate their accounts. This leads to a commercialized account which can give rise to biased reviews depending on how much the individuals were compensated for reviewing the place/food.
The way my friends and I are curating our content gives rise to a more authentic and unique account. There is a trend online in which individuals create “shitposts” where content is not taken too seriously but still conveys a message. We created this account not for others but for ourselves and our friends with the possibility of attracting other individuals in Toronto that would understand our type of content. We are consistent with following an outline we curated, including the date, a rant or blurb about the food followed by pricing, rating and a sign-off of the individual who wrote the post.
There is still much we can improve on, particularly the consistency and frequency of our posts. However, given that the account has not been created for too long and we have many more places to visit, we trust that we can reach more people and improve within time.
