Kristi and Lee had their engagement session in Annapolis in January. This was our first engagement session for 2017! The original date rained all afternoon. The next morning was chilly but dry. This is why we always set up a rain date! We went on a stroll throughout Annapolis. They were worried about looking awkward, but they were able to be themselves and have a good time.
How did you two meet?
Two people fell in love all because of a karaoke bar and a jello shot…. We were both at The Waltz Inn for birthday parties of different friends. It was getting later in the night and things tend to get [black out] rowdy at the Waltz. If you’ve ever been to the Waltz, you’ve probably had a jello shot at one point – you just may not remember. My friend Nick was passing out jello shots and took one with whipped cream and smashed it in my face. Well I thought it would be a great idea to wipe my face off on the shirt of the stranger to my right (sorry, Pat)! The guy ended up being there with Lee and his friends…. Lee’s version of the next part of the story was that he wasn’t sure how Pat was going to react, so he intercepted and bought me a beer. We ended up talking for the rest of the night and before I left, Lee told me (this is my favorite part) to grab a pen and paper and take down his number…. because, ya know, cell phones couldn’t take numbers or anything ;)
How did he propose?
I like to think I’m the planner in the relationship, but Lee proved me wrong for sure. He planned a scavenger hunt and incorporated key milestones and people in the hunt throughout the day! About four weeks before he proposed, he had his little brother (our best man) text to say that he would like to come for a visit – I jumped at the text because he never gets up this way. The day of the proposal, Lee was nervous that I knew something was up so he picked a fight in the morning that made me so mad I was holding a grudge well into the afternoon. We had a football game that ended up running late – we got home from the game and I sat down to eat lunch and catch up on an episode of Dance Mom. Lee “ran out” to clean up his car before Logan and Jess arrived. Mid episode, I hear this loud banging at the door – I open the door to find my little sister Katie (maid of honor) and my brother in law Matt (groomsmen) at the door. Katie hands me the first of many envelopes and it’s a letter from Lee explaining how the day was going to go…. I was going to spend the day taking a trip visiting key places in the last four years of our relationship. He would give me clues, but I had to try and figure out each place and if I got stumped, Matt and Katie had clues to help me along the way. Of course The Waltz Inn was included in the day – The Waltz actually opened an hour early and I wasn’t allowed to leave until I took a jello shot and sang “Going to the Chapel.” The final stop was our favorite restaurant, Woodberry Kitchen. When I pulled up, all of the people who were part of the day plus additional family and friends were there for the moment! Lee got down on one knee, I almost knocked the box out of his hand, and the rest is history.
Tell me about the details you’re most excited about for your upcoming wedding!
Our wedding is going to be pretty casual – It’s a special day for all of our friends and family to come together and just have a blast. We have a lot of friends and family coming from out of town and it’s such an honor that they are going to travel to celebrate with us. We’re also super excited about the Whiskey and Cigar Bar that we’re going to have set up – it’s something we both enjoy and we thought it would be fun and different for our guests to experience.
Where are you getting married?
Patapsco State Park. My best friend Ryan, who was there the night we met and has been part of our relationship for the past 4+ years, is going to marry us in front of all our friends and family.
Who is catering the wedding?
We are super excited about the food! We’re having Mission BBQ cater and for dessert we’re going to have the Iced Gems Cupcake Truck and The Cow ice cream truck!
Who is the DJ?
P Wiz Entertainment – Paul Boyer.
What did you each wear to your session?
My first dress was actually a pick from a bunch of coworkers at MGH. I sent them snaps of my outfits and they unanimously decided on the first outfit because it was edgy but also sweet. It was the white lace with the black leather jacket. I incorporated blue into Lee’s first outfit because he’s got these baby blue stunners that really pop when he wears blue.  I chose the second outfits because I really wanted a pop of color – I also had shoes that matched both the dress and Lee’s pants (did anyone actually notice that detail?!)
What kind of look were you going for?
I think both outfits were true to our ongoing styles.
Do you have any tips or advice for other couples about to have engagement photos taken?
Have fun with it. We were both a little nervous and we were anticipating a super awkward time and for those reasons, we were going to skip the engagement session altogether. But after seeing this pics, we’re so glad we did them with Nick and Clarissa!!! Just be yourselves – those end up being some of the best pictures! Also, save some conversation topics for your pictures because you’ll do a lot of walking and looking at each other so it’s nice to have something to talk about.
How was your overall session experience?
It was amazing! We felt so comfortable and we had so much fun. We’re so pumped for our wedding now – bring it on you guys!

AND I'M BACK. I took a long break from posting on this account because I wanted to give my (somewhat new, but now established) wedding photography company the love and attention it needed to keep up it's Instagram. (If you don't follow @karlinvillondophotography, follow it now!) I'll be slightly more active again, especially posting a whole bunch of photos from the @plannedparenthood show at @930club that was seemingly impossible to find tickets for and from the @womensmarch. Here's @common from that Planned Parenthood show. The full photo set is on @brightestyoungthings. #BYThings #NotASwamp #aCreativeDC #ShowUp #PlannedParenthood #Common #930Club #musicphotography #DCityStyle #FotoDC #NikonD810 #Nikon (at 9:30 Club)
