actually despite sjm claiming to be a feminist queen, the bit in acosf where rhys claims the weapons that nesta made, gifts them to eris, amren tries to convince rhys to use them as his to claim more power

the way ,,, nesta doesn’t fucking erupt ? nesta fucking hates these people - for what they’ve taken from her, how they’ve trapped her

and now she creates these weapons, perhaps the first thing (unknowingly) that she has control over and rhys takes them, thinks they are his? nesta should kill the inner circle and we all know it

and when rhys says no to amren’s plan it’s because he doesn’t want the responsibility or power not because these weapons are not his to use. he feels SO entitled to these objects as he feels entitled to nesta’s powers. he will belittle her and trap her but he does not feel any guilt in taking a women’s power for his own

The ACOTAR series has long been lauded for its allegedly strong heroines, uplifting romances, sex positivity and explorations of female empowerment. I have often found these claims dubious at best and outright contradictory at worst, as past forays into the series have shown me little progress has been made in the genre of paranormal romance wherein dominant, alpha male love interests conquer and claim the female lead whether or not she is willing. The only thing that appears to have evolved is the thin veneer of illusion that she has a “choice” in the matter and yet the forces of fate and narrative combined will determine to push her into the eager arms of this brutish man regardless. Resistance is futile. Alternative paths are closed. There is no escape from the shackles of traditional femininity and heteronormative gender roles.

The series originally follows Feyre Archeron as she is taken from the human lands to the fae society over the Wall as penance for killing a fae disguised as a wolf. The fae society in this world is a martial one filled with warriors and a more primitive approach to gender relations. The words “male” and “female” are often used to refer to fae men and women. There are mystical forces that predetermine sexual partners and misogyny is rife. Feyre soon goes from the arms of one hypermasculine fae male known as Tamlin to another known as Rhysand and after a war with a neighbouring fae territory is resolved they are left to settle into their Happily Ever After.

In this instalment of the series, the romantic storyline follows Nesta Archeron, the elder sister of Feyre, and Cassian, the general of Feyre’s mate, Rhysand. Up to now Nesta has been grappling with being forced to turn into a High Fae by the series’ prior nemesis, the King of Hybern, whom she later killed during his war to claim the fae territories of Prythian across the channel. The ordeal has left her traumatised and angry at the world, engaging in increasingly spiralling behaviours until Feyre and Rhysand forcibly intervene.

Until I read this book I had never felt I was being peddled outright conservative agendas from Sarah J. Maas. Yet with each passing chapter, I was met with another in an extensive line of worrying implications and disturbing scenarios to a point I grew fearful I might not even be able to fit it all into this one review. Let us try, therefore, to take it step by step. I am going to be focusing on a few of the aspects that bothered me most. That is, the Heroine’s Journey itself, the Romance, the Sex (which will surely need its own section) and the Reproductive Trauma. Thus without further ado, let’s delve right in…

lucien having DRIP!! lucien never forgetting how powerful she is. he is my favourite character and he deserves the world 🥺

rhys finally noticing she had trauma?? i mean why did it take so long to realize it was this bad... (but proceeds to not change his behaviour)

azriel and cassian in fear of her power so respectfully they bowed to it. honestly the whole scene of nesta beheading the kelpie is hot

we learned nothing new about cassian? like he’s just a courtier when there were so many mentions that he was like Enalius. they’re supposed to be matched up in power, so why didn’t sjm delve into that??

the second nesta accepted her powers as apart of her it was ripped from her. BUT the girls are saying she has a connection with the mother and she is the only one with access to the trove, but sarah didn’t mention her link to the trove. just that she has a small kernel left. maybe she hates nesta or maybe it’ll be wrapped up in the next novella idk

also the queens? aren’t they all supposed to be evil except vaasa and the queen that was killed? what happened to nesta wanting them all dead?

a lot of buildup of how nesta reminded the bone carver of his siblings. kochei being the death god.. the book of breathings referring to nesta as lady death, Lanthys from the prison calling her the queen of queens... is that just gone now? can she still kill the unkillable? can she still make trove objects? can she still produce silver flames??

i get her sjm making nesta being the one to save feyre, but why did it take THAT sacrifice to realize she’s a good person. did she not save cassian? kill the king? find the cauldron? why did it take this long for them to realize she wasn’t a shitty person just cause she processes her emotions differently

doesn’t sit right in my spirit that sjm couldn’t allow another character with as much power as feysand.. first with amren and now nesta.

doesn’t sit right that elain has more power now. she is the definition of a true bystander and now she’s the powerful one

okay some real substantial opinions on the book

- NESTA EMERIE AND GWYN + HOUSE WERE THE REAL STARS OF THE SHOW IM SO SOFT FOR THEM AHHHHHH

- NESSIAN okay the nessian was like 7/10 it couldve been better but im happy with it... i just feel like it got very simplified

- real talk: this was def, imo, nesta's book not nessian's book. this isnt a bad thing, j was a smidge unexpected. like, in an anime, this is nesta's arc (lmao).

- i do wish that a few more things got completely hashed out... ie. rly flashback of amren and nesta's fight, nesta confronting cassian abt mor and abt him saying she's unloveable, how shitty it was to trap nesta in that situation

- THE DANCING COULDVE BEEN MORE I WAS OBSESSED WITH THE MF DANCING CHAPTER that was BEAUTIFUL

- more abt the mother? like apparently she was a worse version of nesta but like??? i need more

- okay but like rhys not telling feyre she could possibly die?? that was shitty as fuck like what the fuck was that... withholding that information for THAT long was kinda ridiculous

- continuing with ^^^, like nesta needed to realize that she wasn't the shittiest person in the world for telling feyre - it just felt a little bit to me like she only realized she was worth something bc cassian like validated her??
