The Erebus flower shop AU (from a former florist) 2/3 parts
- Fitzjames : wedding planner in his heart, has really bad scars on his fingers because of hot glue, never stops talking about his travels and the techniques he learned there (for your own good never ask about the Netherlands), there is always red or orange flowers in his bouquets, hyacinths are his favorite
- Gore : does everything with a green apron on, his skin has bad reactions to some resin, loves making Christmas arrangements and table runners, “did you know this flower was edible? :)”, the only arms that can carry a bouquet of more than 30 roses, is known for having a huge and beautiful garden at home, sunflowers are his favorite
- LeVesconte : likes to draw his bouquets before doing them, noisy asf about everything that happen in town, bets on how many years the couples whose wedding he’s decorating have left together, always makes the highest funeral arrangement, iris are his favorites
- Fairholme : knows pretty well the language of flowers, had slipped on a leaf once and nearly broke his ankle -is now traumatized, acts like he knows how to take care of interior plants but doesn't (make up random advices to customers when he is alone), makes the most insanely detailed buttonholes, gets lost while making deliveries, snapdragons are his favorites

his shirt looks way too big for him. i fully believe it's billy's shirt.

as @levithestripper said over on twitter (which is so evil): "wearing his girlfriends shirt so the last thing he can feel and smell is her"

saw this on the "joy in the terror" post and was weirdly struck by the image of Hickey laughing with them while conspicuously not joining the dogpile. A ship must be such a weird situation for him -- he gets this glimpse of honest and open fraternity that would be anathema to his situation back in England. He's workshy and untrustworthy and contentious and striving and staggeringly out of his depth but shipboard, for once, the danger is not other men. I wonder if he's ever up til now been a participant of something bigger than himself, rather than a victim or scavenger of it. I wonder whether the thought of wholeheartedly joining them is alien and uncomfortable, if he longs for it but fears losing that cultivated sharpness that has kept him alive all this time. Why he couldn't imagine that they would have ever just let him "join up" like Crozier had said he could.

love how jop's hallucination epitomises his dynamic with crozier — not only the perceived abandonment of the present, but his invisibility leading up to it.
I mean, how many times has he been in this position?

stewardship grants him access to command (and a face of crozier) that others are denied, yet it comes at the requisite of servitude. he's close enough to see, but too low to touch; allowed to listen, but not to speak. he's a background piece; a half-thing with a decanter while the real people talk. he's communicated at (rather than with) using a nod or shake of the head, a 'yes' or 'no' to whatever he's offering, in brief asides to conversation — which he can witness but not partake in.

then there's the fact that, when jopson confides in crozier about his mother, it's completely unknown to his captain. it's the first time he's confiding in him (according to garrigan), likely the first personal thing crozier learns about him. and crozier has to prompt him to talk about it, since he doesn't raise the subject or elaborate of his own volition.
when crozier tells him a story, though, jopson is already familiar. he knows how it ends, remembers its details (like names). he's probably heard it countless times before, around those tables, unseen but still listening to words meant for other people. and when crozier asks if he wants to hear it, he says yes anyway, because it's the first time he's performing it for him — talking with (not to) him, looking at him, touching him. he is his sole audience member now.

all that to say: jopson's role as steward positions him as watcher/listener (passive) and carer/informant (active) to crozier. the power differential there says that he may touch, but only in servitude — to attach epaulettes, to sew cuffs. he may share a story, but only when invited to speak. he may act if it's for someone else. but, for himself, he cannot even ask, let alone have.
so jopson crawling on that table, that's not just him crawling to a man he thinks has abandoned him. that's all the time he's spent watching someone who's looking away. that's him abandoning the silence of servitude and asking for himself. it's more or less his only request.

and it goes unheard.

Considering which one is worse: Edward turning his frustration with Crozier into silent resentment towards Jopson, Crozier's goodest boy that doesn't have to beg for scraps of approval, silent resentment that might blow up suddenly when neither of them saw it coming, or Edward internalizing Crozier's treatment of him, adding it to his low self worth, Crozier's judgement of him might as well be the right judgement, which adds to him being convinced he's not good enough for Thomas, he's commiting a mistake picking Edward to be with and everyone can see it, everyone (Crozier) knows it.
