Whether you're an og fan of prestige classic The Terror, love book clubs, always wanted to read a romance novel about Graham Gore, a combination of these, or none of the above — join us in reading The Ministry of Time.

How does the book club work?

We have set up a meeting time availability survey to find a time that works best for everyone who wants to join.

The book comes out May 7th. To give everyone some time to get their hands on a copy, we will kick off the book club in the week of May 20th.

Because Franklin's funeral and Crozier's drunken eulogy is so eyes emoji I think it gets lost in the shuffle that it completely replaces any sort of memorial for Gore (his name being literally crossed out! no honors or prayers for him! no burial either but that's on the Tuunbaq) despite the fact that it is one of the most succint summaries of the show's themes, namely, Colonialism Bad and Supplanting of Identity.

Like Sir John, Thee Avatar of Empire, takes the very funeral honors and, in Victorian Society, the only chance Gore's immortal soul has of being at peace, because despite him liking Gore very much he still takes and takes and takes because of the corrosive hierarchy they cling to when it will be their ruin. And there's the very literal taking of his name and ceremony over, in the way individual identities and even personhood are eroded, stolen and warped beyond recognition over the course of the show until they are Gone and even Crozier is quite Dead, figuratively, because only Aglooka remains.

James: specialist surgeon ("surgeon energy" "like being that good at something")

Silna: public defender who becomes a prosecutor, "still with the spirit of a public defender but prosecuting, um… bad actors."

Why won’t tumblr let me upload more than one video clip, my laptop is broken, I can’t paste them together, and I need visuals for my ineloquent “The power dynamics aboard HMS Erebus are odd before Sir John dies” ramble. Because in episode 1 alone there’s at least three scenes where someone asks Graham Gore a question or gives him a command (usually Sir John), and he looks at Fitzjames, who makes one clear deliberate nod or wordless encouragement, and only then does Graham do whatever was asked. He is not the only one, Dr Stanley physically turns away from Sir John to speak to James when Silna and her father are brought aboard. All this while Sir John clearly is the leader of the expedition, the most senior officer in general rank and actual position. Yes James is the Captain of Erebus, but Sir John technically is more so. There might be more, all of it was wordless on James’ part, and contrary to what you people might think, I don’t ONLY look at him while watching

I just think these historical dead men as interpreted by a fictional, limited series television show adapted from a novel would understand Ao3 in a way I will never ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Still thinking about Fitzjames and Gore and envy today, and there's one incredibly simple wee throwaway line from the script that's driving me wild with all the heavy lifting it's doing -

"Fitzjames sees: One of Gore's cuffs is smudged with grease."

It's from the scene where Gore is making his report to Franklin on Erebus' bent rudder. We don't even really see it realised on screen but, by God, doesn't it just say so much?

On the one hand, it's clear that Fitzjames is envious of Gore.

In Fitzjames' mind, Gore is the very picture of Victorian manhood and nobility. He's everything that Fitzjames wishes he himself was, everything he feels he's only pretending and, often, feels he's failing to be. And Gore, seemingly, doesn't even have to try! So in a way it makes sense to me that Fitzjames might zero in on any perceived imperfection, even just as a comfort to himself.

But on the other hand, another far more charitable and, I think, more accurate reading of that wee line is essentially 'real recognising real'.

Fitzjames, whether he always realises it himself or not, is an excellent leader - particularly at an interpersonal level - and an eminently practical one too. He's all about getting shit done and he isn't afraid to get his hands dirty in the process. So it also makes sense to me that he would take notice of Gore having done the same - having cracked on and gotten done the job of checking Erebus 'at the knees', having gotten his own hands dirty.

I don't think I'm articulating any of this very well yet but all the layers of that relationship - loving and respecting a man as your friend, seeing yourself in him but also wanting to be him and being unspeakably envious of everything he is and everything he has, even while he loves and respects you back and looks up to you as his friend and superior officer...?

There's just so much there and every bit of it is delicious!

thinking about how they still set a place at the table for gore after he died, his plate sitting there empty. and not long after sir john died and fairholme left (died, too, shortly thereafter, even if they didn't know it yet). how fucking lonely it must have been for dundy and fitzjames afterwards, sharing meals just between the two of them, everyone else who used to eat with them dead and gone.
