Every mythology and religion has a creation theory, whether it was born out of chaos or perfectly planned within 6 days. Each creation story has its own unique idea of how our world was created. Each rely on mighty deities to create the world and its many wonders. All this made me think – even though The Sanctuary is nothing more than my “Happy Place”, I believe it should…

Terra in Trouble
Tumblr media
Acrylic on Canvas
September 2016 This painting was born from the heartbreaking realisation that our planet is literally fucked! I started this painting after watching James Cameron’s “Avatar”. The scene where the home tree falls and the grief the Na’Vi feel left me with an emotional surge so strong that I felt all I could do was paint in order to process it. The majority of Humans don’t feel that…

Peacekeeper

Acrylic on Canvas
May 2016
Peacekeeper is the guardian of the new world. She plays an important role in the narrative of Sanctuary. When I began painting her in the February of 2016 my life was  on a downward spiral. I wasn’t coping at home and with big family dramas on a constant loop. My Aunty was trying to be as helpful as she could and became a great inspiration to me as she began to play…

August 2016
This painting was created months after Peacekeeper when I entered a period of my life where painting was not a possibility for me because I was moving and staying at different locations, unable to set up a permanent location for an easel. That suddenly changed in at the start of summer 2016 when I finally found a place to call my own. I was full of so much positive…

June 2015
Well, best start at the start I suppose.
In June of 2015, I was completing my degree. It was a rough part of my life, loads happened. My final project had just taken a sudden change from LGBT based issues to one of escapism. My tutors were not happy with this decision, they couldn’t understand that after a year of researching into global LGBT issues it began to be too much for me too handle, there was so many devastating stories. I tried to explain this, but tutors always think they know best don’t they?
So I decided fuck it! If they wanted me to continue with a project I couldn’t put my heart into I would find a way I could. At the time I had been binge watching Once Upon a Time on Netflix, and the idea occurred to me; if all these worlds exist and all they need is a doorway to open one why don’t I make one, so that’s what I set out to do!
I had already created a large amount of work by this stage, so the problem was; what would do I do with it? During my second year I discovered my love for transposition, that and my recent trip to Paris give me the idea of recreating The Raft of the Medusa by Théodore Géricault. I decided this would represent how I thought this world was a wreck and I was planning on leaving it.
I began to open the portal to this world, the world of Sanctuary, that I hadn’t even considered at this point. However it wasn’t meant to be.
My tutors vetoed my piece before I had the chance to complete it. If you have never had to paint over a artwork of yours before I can honestly tell you, it rips at your soul as if you were about to make a Horcrux.
Then a whole load of shit happened, but I don’t want to bore you with the details so I’ll keep it short. My boyfriend broke up with me the week of my degree exhibit. I had to move back to my parents house, which doesn’t sound to bad but think of it as more moving into Tartarus. The mixture of all this was enough to give me the biggest artistic block of my life.

Do I have a God Complex?
As Sanctuary is completely and utterly my own creation, wouldn’t that mean that I am it’s God. That is of course if Sanctuary is a real place, but depending on some multi-verse theories, the fact I have simply had the thought could possibly mean that it does exist in the multi-verse.
However back on track, I never truly wanted to be Sanctuary’s God I thought of it more as somewhere I could disappear to when reality was beginning to be too much for me.
This raises many religious questions such as does Sanctuary have a God? or many gods? Or is it a Godless land? I’m sure there would be a God, due to my belief in creationism, but the question still stands: Who would the God/Gods of the new world be??

The scene where the home tree falls and the grief the Na'Vi feel left me with an emotional surge so strong that I felt all I could do was paint in order to process it. The majority of Humans don’t feel that type of connection to our host planet anymore, and it saddens me greatly. The beams that are coming from Terra are the planet’s chakras as if they where screaming for spiritual cleansing. The pressure sets off a chain of volcanoes that destroys the pests that cover Terra.

August 2016
This painting was created months after Peacekeeper when I entered a period of my life where painting was not a possibility for me because I was moving and staying at different locations, unable to set up a permanent location for an easel. That suddenly changed in at the start of summer 2016 when I finally found a place to call my own. I was full of so much positive energy it was for the first time in what seemed like millenia. I could see a clear and positive horizon. To capture this feeling I painted a self portrait of my arrival on the island of Sanctuary.
The wreck of my Raft laid across the beach before me as I sat peacefully on my own and contemplated the many paths that still stood in front of me.

My Aunty was trying to be as helpful as she could and became a great inspiration to me as she began to play the role of peacekeeper between me and my family. As my Aunty has a slight obsession with angels I thought it best that the guardian and peacekeeper be an angel. In the world of Sanctuary, the Peacekeeper is the one that created and protects the world with her mighty wings.

Sanctuary
Acrylic on Canvas
January 2016
After several months of stress and the biggest art block of my life so far, I decided to go back to the start, before the block began and recreate a piece that I had to destroy. This is my inner world, a place where I can go to inside myself to calm down and create new ideas, with the difficulties that are added onto my life because of my Aspergers’ Syndrome it is a nice relief to disappear into this world when the real one simply becomes too much, the idea came from a life long obsession fairytales and fantasy world’s such as, J. M. Barrie's Neverland, and similar works. The waves in the piece are transpositions of Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off of Kanagawa.
