The person who translated this comic has a pretty bad habit of cropping out comic panels they find too difficult to translate, drastically changing lines because they think its funnier that way, and just a general lack of quality.

123 Rhodes Island: Spot

Spot: It's alright as long as you remember to put it back. Last time during the department check, Instructor Dobermann nagged at me as the comics were too messy.

Midnight: Okay.

Midnight: Anyway. Is Instructor Dobermann counted as a long straight black haired type?

Midnight: A tsundere?

Spot: You're so geeky.

Midnight: The story of Spot leaving home is also very comic-like.

Spot: It's not.

Spot: But after all these years of roaming, these hands are full of calluses...

Spot: Look.

I'm pretty sure "like magic girl Homura Akemi" was supposed to be a translator's note, but without any visual indication, it just looked like it was part of the comic. And "gay doujin for fan service" was just entirely made up.

The Arknights Anthology series is kind of weird. Not to be confused with the Blacksteel manga, which you should also read by the way, which is more of a single (if slightly nonlinear) story, the anthology is entirely made up of self-contained stories by several different artists. Which is neat, but you also just get wildly different stories with little consistency.

A few chapters are just cutesy stories with the characters, a good amount are slice of life stories that oftentimes offer some good characterization, less serious stories that are still quite good and can sometimes go completely off the rails, as well as, of course, the odd fanservice chapter. There are actually a few action-oriented works in here, as well as more serious stories that offer a more serious look at the characters.

The ones I really want to point out are the final stories for volumes two and three by REM_hinotomi. This artist also did the final chapter for volume one, Family Vacation, which was great but more focused on a small cast than the other two. Both Everyday Rhodes and Extraordinary Rhodes are on the longer side, and they follow one character as they go through Rhodes Island and see various other characters. There are seriously too many little moments and interactions in these chapters to go into, and I suggest you read these two chapters if nothing else. You get the sense that the artist actually really cares for Arknights and the characters, and that they’re portrayed accurately. These chapters lean into something really appealing about Rhodes Island that often gets sidelined by some focused stories, and that’s the fact that Rhodes is this community of wildly different people who all come together and form a unique community under a single cause, and these chapters really give you a sense of that community. And my god it actually has an in-character nonviolent interaction with Lappland. Unreal.

Overall, I’d just really recommend reading the anthology series. It does seem like it’s a little weighted towards Penguin Logistics and more popular factions at times, but even less developed characters like Matoimaru get their time to shine. Sometimes the operators can be a little out of character but it’s got such a range of chapters that you can pick up and put down that it’s bound to have something you like. There were actually a lot more stories I wanted to go into but simply ran out of space, or things that I could just talk about individually, but to go on and on about all of them would be a Sisyphean task.

🚨New research alert! A study based on ancient DNA led by Museum researchers has resolved a longstanding controversy about an extinct “horned” crocodile from Madagascar. The croc, Voay robustus, was endemic to the island and likely lived among humans. Early explorers to Madagascar noted that Malagasy peoples consistently referred to two types of crocodiles on the island: a large robust crocodile and a thinner one with a preference for rivers, suggesting that both types persisted until very recently. But only the gracile form, now recognized as an isolated population of the Nile crocodile, Crocodylus niloticus, is now found on the island. To fully examine the horned crocodile’s place in the evolutionary tree, researchers made a number of attempts to sequence DNA from fossil specimens, including two well-preserved skulls that have been at the Museum since the 1930s.

We got beaten to the punch again! Arknights Anthology really is the wild west of scanlations. But since my TL was already complete by the time the first scanlation of this chapter was uploaded, and there were a couple of minor mistranslations with the one that was already posted, I thought it would be worth giving my version a quick typeset and uploading it anyways.
