i hate how non-canon ships have become so controversial nowadays, like i just miss how most people were multi-shippers. we even used to ship characters that were in different fandoms, what happened to that??

I'd like to add my two cents. I absolutely love all of the points made here, though it seems focused on Hiccup and Toothless being strange just to people. Which isn't bad, and Hiccup being weird isn't talked about nearly enough. But since this is about them as a duo being weird to other dragon/rider duos, here's some things about them being a little strange to dragons.

Starting with toothless, he's legit shown to copy human things, like when Hiccup smiles and he responds with that signature gummy grin.

Also, may I draw your attention to the entire sequence of him attempting to woo the lightfury.

He has no idea what to do. During one of his first attempts at a courting dance, he stands up and walks with his forelimbs on his hips

which is him directly copying hiccup

for all of his other attempts, he seems to be copying other dragons courting, and it's definitely very strange.

Like, just look at her face:

he's disturbing. Uncanny, even.

IF Toothless was ever around other nightfuries, he clearly hasn't been for a long, long time. His behaviors are an amalgamation of things he's copying from several different species, including humans.

Meanwhile, Hiccup isn't necessarily a disturbing sort of weird, but he IS odd.

In the first movie, dragons find him strange seemingly just because he's not hostile, and they're not used to humans that don't try to kill them. (See: monstrous nightmare in the arena when hiccup threw away his helmet.)

In the second movie, he makes peace with dragons by acting like a dragon. He ignites monstrous nightmare saliva while moving is slow sways, and lights zippleback gas in a circle.

The dragons are seemingly hypnotized by this. Who is this human that weilds our fire?

Sure, it's still strange that Hiccup isn't hostile, but these dragons have been around Valka, who also isn't. Yet even Valka, the "crazy feral vigilante dragon lady," can't breathe fire or fly on her own.

Let me reiterate, even dragons who are used to a weird human think that Hiccup is weird.

Valka: "This is what it is to be a dragon, Hiccup"

Hiccup: *Flies with his own wings*

(Also another moment of Hiccup being wierd to humans, a random person thought he was an actual demon)

I love these two masking weirdos. They've effected each other deeply, as any best friends do. Toothless is just a bit too human, and hiccup is just a bit too dragon.

We should talk more about Hiccup and toothless being strange compared to other rider/dragon duos.

I’m not talking about Toothless giving Hiccup scary dog privileges, I’m talking about both of them being a little uncanny.

All dragon riders care for their dragons, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’ve never been in the situation those two were in. They’ve never had to be.

Most dragon riders have never made a prosthetic for their dragons. They’ve never had full control over where they went. They’ve never had the ability to choose whether their companion flew into rock and bleed.

They’ve never had to worry that being seen around their dragons would get them exiled or worse.

And I think it should be recognized more.

Hiccup who by now is used to sensing and Feeling movement before the action happens moving out of someone’s way before they even realize he could be in their path, so used to focusing on body language to avoid catastrophe.

Toothless who tried to be careful around humans, well aware of how squishy they could be.

He holds still while Hiccup changes his tailfin because the first time he didn’t hold still and they both ended up falling to the earth but it was Hiccup who had it worse. The bruises lasting for days and easily ignored by the people around him.

Despite the prosthetic being changed out to allow Toothless free flight without Hiccup’s input, they often end up acting like nothing changed.

The muscles underneath Hiccup twitch like they do when Toothless prepares to dive, and his foot moves to change a non existent gear before he realizes what he’s doing. Toothless waits the millisecond it takes for the foot to move before diving.

Do you think Hiccup would start wearing a bit of black once dragons are accepted, to help with Toothless’s attack camouflage?

No, y'know what, after thinking about this a bit I've realized that I forgot to even CONSIDER the comedy gold that is the implication of Jamie's mother believing in the boogeyman, cause she can see him. But at the same time she doesn't believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman, or Jack Frost

I can see it now, lol

Jamie and Pitch playing nice during like, dinnertime or something, but the moment they're alone it's just glares and quietly arguing until either Pitch pulls the "Now is that any way to treat your new father?" And/or Jamie pulls the "You're not my real dad!"

It's so dumb and I love it actually

Here’s a digital painting of what I imagined to be one of Toothless’s descendants. I tried to keep some very subtle elements of the light fury in there (smoother body, lighter markings as apposed to Toothless’s darker spots, etc) as this wouldn’t be a full night fury, but I like the idea of somebody down the line taking after Toothless.

I will say, I don’t particularly enjoy my digital background skills yet. I’m working on it. I also feel I could’ve done better with the lighting, so here’s the character without the background or lighting:
