Okay but concept based on john being kinda the new tony stark (shipped with everyone and their mother)

john "living PR crisis" walker constantly convincing the public that he is dating each of his teammates:

It starts when the New Avengerz have like a really bad mission. A publicly bad mission. And they are trying to do damage control at a press conference. One of the more conservative-leaning reporters (who all only address their questions to John and maybe sometimes Bucky) starts asking questions like, "what has it been like going from being led by very decorated men in the military to being an Avenger under the leadership of Ms. Belova?" (basically implying Yelena is a bad leader because she is a woman). And John is. Just so tired and his body hurts and he is tired of being some weird pedestal for these annoying misogynistic racist people. So he just loses it. Starts ranting about how Yelena is the best leader he has ever had and that he would "follow her to hell and back without question you fucking losers."

And the press doesn't understand that John at his core really is that loyal when he trusts someone (and he has trusted Yelena since they got out of the vault together). So OF COURSE the press assumes that they are sleeping together.

None of the thunderbolts take it seriously--it's just some stupid gossip that will eventually pass on. (But Yelena does give John a hug when no one is around to thank him for supporting her).

Except.

It keeps happening.

Ava has a bad day spiraling about her childhood growing up in labs and John invites her to come with him during his visitation with his son. They all spend the day under the sun running around playing games before getting ice cream. The next day, the headlines read, "Current Avengers, John Walker and Ava Starr: Relationship Timeline (co-parenting?)."

And then, Bucky gets thrown into a wall during a mission, and John just freaks out, eyes glassy, and starts frantically petting him, making sure that he was okay. Someone takes a photo of John holding Bucky's face in his hands, looking terrified.

After that, during one of those PR "friendship test videos" (that all of them hate but Val forces them to do) Alexei and John are paired together and one of the questions is what is the other person's favorite food. And John's answer is not only right, but like insanely specific, i.e., the borscht from this shop in this random street in St. Petersburg, outside of which Alexei had his first kiss. Alexei talks alot, okay-and John had unfortunately asked what everyone's favorite food was as the resident cook and was plagued with a good enough memory even without the serum to remember every. single. word. Alexei said. (When this inevitably blows up, Yelena immediately makes fun of John for being such a whore that he goes for two generations in the same family).

Eventually, the press also start asking questions about who this random dude living with the team in the Avengerz tower is and John just immediately panics and say "he's my....guy?" (he had a blond moment and couldn't think of anything fast enough).

Bonus: John's old tweets resurface and it's just. Him fighting people on main during the height of civil war on how Sam Wilson is a great Avenger (He can fucking fly??) and just generally being kind of lowkey obsessed with Falcon (like c'mon Sam did some crazy missions for the military as Falcon, there were probably tons of military people who were kind of obsessed with him). And the public are just like...oop Captain America totally rejected Walker's ass lmao

I’m adding onto this bc I thought it should be relevant. The movie warfare is a great depiction of some of the things John would’ve seen during his time overseas.

The movie is based on a true story of a real veteran and is dedicated to someone who was in that same mission. The movie is graphic and vulgar but it prides itself on being accurate. Surprisingly, movie is actually pretty accurate with only a few, minor flaws.

This is one of those movies that a veteran, who was in the war on terror, probably could not watch until a year or more had passed after they had gotten out. This movie also does a great job of not portraying a good vs evil type of situation. Sure, there’s “protagonists” and “antagonists.” But not good or bad guys. The politics are more neutral in this film, leaving them in the background for just brutal realism. The end of the movie leaves you with the sentiment of “this is why an entire population could hate us.” It’s life over there during that time, both as the natives and the foreigners fighting.

Idk, food for thought. Especially with what John says about his time overseas, it just makes a lot more sense.

If my memory isn’t playing tricks on me, there’s a show called SEAL Team that has an episode in Season 1 where they mention SERE training. In that episode, the character Clay Spenser gets abducted and tortured in the most dehumanizing way. (Yes, it’s not a real situation. It’s part of the training but it still felt real to me though.)

That made me think about John going through the same kind of training during his time in the military. After all, what would it mean to rescue hostages without even passing the training that teaches you what it's like to be a hostage yourself?

He must have gone through it, which is why he knows exactly what could happen if he doesn’t storm in quickly to help. That’s why it becomes second nature for him to end things fast because dragging it out never leads to anything good, only death. That’s also why his fighting style leans heavily on brute force. He believes there’s no time to think, only to act. Slowing things down makes him anxious, so he’ll do whatever it takes to end a fight quickly, even if it means hurting himself or putting his life on the line.

hehehe Flag and IFL football. Sorry if it's rough around the edges, I just wanted to get it out there bc I miss playing flag football and going to a IFL game inspired me :p

Ava and Yelena are both playing flag football so I get a little bit more freedom as there's not really a major league akin to that of the IFL. Ava's team is the Ghosts for obvious reasons and I modeled it after her og suit. A lot of people, younger and older, wear long sleeves/tights, so translating Ava's body suit for her chronic pain is pretty easy. Yelena gets Thunderbolts bc she literally played for a team called that. The blue and pink were just colors I thought would stand out as an actual thunderbolt as part of the design for her team. I also translated her eye makeup to the smearing of the eye black (I hc that Natasha would do a spider one). With Yelena's hair, I think she would slick it back to hold it in place and then wear a halo as a headband/protection.

Alexei played professionally too. However, he played hockey for Russia. He kind of understands football so he doesn't understand flag a lot but he loves to cheer Yelena on. Bc of his track suit in the end credits scene, i feel like he would get all of the personalized merch he could to both embarrass Yelena and support her.

John currently plays for the Quad City Steamwheelers. Unfortunately, there's no current Georgia or New York team so he couldn't play there. So I stuck him where Lemar's from, Illinois. I gave him the national anthem pose bc i think it fits. I also think that John and Lemar played together on said team. However, Lemar still dies in this universe. It's one of those tragic car accidents. So, the following game there's a little spiel and a video showcasing Lemar's life. The following year, the Steamwheelers showcase Lemar's mom on the big camera shortly after the anniversary of his death. The two seats beside her are typically occupied by Lemar's sister/dad but they weren't there. I also put Lemar's mom in a 2024 jersey bc Lemar dies in 2024 (mcu timeline is weird and I don't understand it but I think that's when he dies).

I really wanted to draw both Joaquin and Bob in the sharks outfits, however it doesn't really make sense for them. I don't think Bob would actually play because of medical reasons. Like, he played when he was younger but didn't continue. So, water boy for the sharks, hence the merch rather than a jersey. Joaquin would play for the sharks bc of his background, but I think it would be funny to tie in his original lore of bring from Arizona to make it so that he's played for the Rattlers in 2024 when they won then got traded to his state team.

Sorry for inaccuracies when it comes to the stadiums. I loosely based it off of the game I went to recently. Also, I really had fun designing Ava & Yelena's because I know how teams design them. The older you go, the less fun of a design it typically is. But the colors are pretty much everything when it comes to uniforms. In club flag football (less in college) you get these cool color combinations/designs, plus you get to choose your name. College wise it isn't that great but it's still pretty badass looking in pictures.

Forgot where I read it but someone on here said that John’s arm would be fucked up because he’s taking the brunt of whatever he’s doing with the shield with that arm constantly, so much so the serum doesn’t really heal it completely. And considering that’s also the arm Sam and Bucky broke in FATWS I’d imagine it isn’t even perfectly healed from that.

I’m gunna need that to be canonized in fanart asap
