BASIL -
As a green witch, this is the information I’ve put together about basil to go in my book of shadows. I’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to ~ enjoy and feel free to use!
Common name: Basil
Latin name: Ocimum basilicum [pronounced ochy-moom bassil-ih-coom]
Ocimum is the Greek word for fragrant.
Basilicum has a double meaning: it could come from the Greek word ‘basilium’ which means king - in the sense that the smell of basil is fit for a king. However, it could also be derived from the Latin word ‘basilisicum’ which translates as ‘Basilisk’ - a creature that is known to cause madness and death.
Other names: Albahaca, American Dittany, Our Herb, St Joseph’s Wort and Witches Herb.
Gender: Masculine
Planet correspondence: Mars
Element: Fire
Links to other religions:
Basil known a ‘holy basil’ or Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is very sacred in Hinduism. Its leaves are mandatory in the ritualistic worship of the god Vishnu. Basil is a Hindu symbol of love fidelity, eternal life, purification and protection.
History:
For hundreds of years, basil has been associated with creepy crawlies such as snakes and lice - but especially scorpions. In the 1500s, doctors thought that smelling basil would conjure ‘scorpions of the mind.’ This meant that they thought scorpions would grow inside the brain!
This theory can be traced to an English physician who ‘observed’ while he was in Italy that is you placed a basil leaf under a stone in a moist place, then within 2 days a scorpion would be produced. There’s also another story of an English physician who had a patient with a scorpion infestation in his brain - though to be caused by frequently smelling basil!
In the Tudor times, pots of basil were given as parting gifts - use basil in your travelling and safe journey spells.
in Elizabethan times, sweet basil was used as snuff to clear the brain, and ease colds and headaches.
The ancient Romans used basil to curse their enemies. they would curse them as they planted the seeds, and to ensure good growth they believed that mistreating the plants and praying to the gods that it wouldn’t grow would actually help it grow faster. They associated basil with poverty, hate and misfortune.
It’s also common folklore that witches drank basil juice before flying on their brooms!
Main beliefs about basil:
- Carrying a leaf in your pocket or wallet can attract wealth, and if you’re a shop owner place it above the till or door to ensure the money comes rolling in.
- If a basil plant is given to a member of the opposite sex (these were the days before basic human rights and equality huh), they will fall deeply in love with the giver and be forever faithful.
- In some countries it’s seen as something ‘real men’ don’t eat because it’s associated with the teas used to relieve menstrual cramps.
- It can both ward against and attract insanity. The beliefs vary from place to place, but this myth stems from the fact that ‘basil’ may be derived from the Latin for ‘Basilisk,’ a creature known to drive people insane.
- After an argument, drinking basil tea can help you calm down and put you in the right frame of mind to peacefully settle the dispute. After a family falling out, cooking meals heavily laced with basil (this one’s for all you kitchen witches) can help reconcile emotions and bring harmony once again.
Modern uses and symbolism:
Steadies the mind, happiness, love, peace, wealth, protects against insanity
Medical Properties:
Basil contains cinnamanic acid which enhances circulation, stabilises blood sugar and improves breathing. It’s rich in vitamin A, C and K. It also has copper, calcium, iron, magnesium and omega-3 fats in it.
Natural cures and remedies:
- For colds, chew a few basil leaves twice a day until you’re cured
- To soothe coughs, add 8 basil leaves and 5 cloves to a cup of boiling water and drink. For a sore throat due to coughing, boil water with basil leaves and gargle with it.
- To eliminate stress, chew 10 basil leaves twice a day
- To combat acne, try making basil juice and applying it to the area once a day
- For stomach, pains swallow 1tsp of basil juice mixed with 1tsp of ginger juice
- For insect bites and stings, rub basil leaves on the wound
- Chew some basil leaves to get rid of mouth infections and ulcers
- Basil can also be rubbed on the skin to repel mosquitoes

Salts - Magikal Properties
Whether it is black salt, sea salt, pink salt or just plain old. Salt has a long history of use in rituals, purification, blessings and magical protection. Salt is created and thrives in the Ocean (or the Womb of the Goddess) It is the taste of Earth in the waters of life. salt is a amazing and versatile natural source for cleansing, and is a must have for anyone.
Regular Sea Salt - sea salt is overall very common, easy to obtain and affordable. It can be bought in either course chunks or fine like sand. White salt is associated with purification, purity, protection and blessings.
Used in consecration
Placed in water to cleanse it
Purification, cleansing and removal or negative energies,
Can be placed around areas to protect them
Commonly used in circles
Used in Curses
Can be made into salt scrubs
Celtic Sea Salt- is a “moist” unrefined sea salt that is usually found on the coastal areas of France. It has a gorgeous light grey, almost light purple color; it is harvested from the clay found in salt flats. This salt has similar properties to regular sea salt however because it is a much more natural and pure salt its properties are enhanced especially protective and cleansing. It also tastes amazing and is filled with vital minerals, I also find that since it is moist it clumps together nicely making it easy to work with and shape.
Used in consecration
Purification, cleansing and removal of negative energies,
protective spells
blessings
curses
soothing
great for cooking
medicinal
perfect in bath scrubs
Black Salt- black salt is as the title says black or very dark in color. It is commonly available at magic shops, and is also very easy to make. Not to be confused with black lava salt or kala namak salts used in fine cuisine.RITUAL BLACK SALT IS NOT FOR CONSUMPTION!!!. This salt is easily the most protective of the four as it is great at Nullifying or returning negative energy.
protective
Banishing
fire energy,
can be used for darker earthly Elementals & Deities,
the Crone or Triple Goddesses
working with the dark moon
Warding, uncrossings, and binding work
can be spread around doorways & windows to keep out evil
Himalayan Pink Salt- is a pure, hand mined salt that is from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. It is harvested from ancient sea salt deposits, it thought to be one of the highest quality and purest salts available. The salt ranges in hues from white to various shades of pink, and even deep reds; this is the result of the salts high iron and mineralcontent. This salt has the most soothing and loving energizes of the salts and can be used for bringing about love.
promoting love and friendship
promoting positive energizes
Healing
cleansing
spell bags
baths or scrubs
If working with salt keep in mind that it is a natural dessicating agent meaning it sucks all the water so if your working with it outside and are sprinkling it on the ground it will kill your grass and destroy the surrounding soil making it inhabitable for plants and such.

Hey there! I just started to study witchcraft, and have a couple questions... first off, what's an easy way to write spells? I've researched it, but all of the instructions I've seen are unclear. Secondly, I recently tried to summon a faerie, but I'm not sure it worked. What are some signs of fae being nearby? Thank you! :)
I actually have just the thing for you! I learned spellcraft from a book called
Power Spellcraft for Life
(Arin Murphy-Hiscock), and I use those techniques to this day. Here is my modified take on her method:
Identify your goal/desire
This is fairly straightforward. Let’s say you want a cat, and cats cost money, even if you scoop them up off the street. There’s the adoption fee, the vet fee (which includes spaying/neutering, vaccinating, microshipping), and then the other expenses such as routine check ups, more vaccinations, flee preventatives, worm preventatives, and, of course, food. Let’s say all this costs around $500 a year (that’s a conservative estimate, btw, and you double i if you have two cats).
That…is a lot of money, I know. This isn’t even including the cost of emergency vet care.
Decide on a time
Based on your desire, select an appropriate time to do the spell.
Now, based on what I wrote in the last section, what this boils down to is money. I’m going to assume you’re a young adult and unemployed like me, so this means you need employment. Oh. Joy.
Let’s crack open the Google Grimoire now and check some things. Now, I’m assuming you don’t want to wait any longer than necessary to get your hypothetical cat (damned kids don’t understand to wonders of delayed gratification…), so you’re going to do this based on days and hours.
In this case: Thursday (day of Jupiter, associated with finances and careers and good fortune), in the hour of Jupiter (Because redundancy).
Decide on a method
How will you cast?
Candle? Jar? Herbal Sachet? Or will you write it down and speak it (or just burn it, which I find works equally well)? This is ultimately up to personal preference, but today, you’re using a candle. Don’t look at me like that, I’m writing this, you don’t have free will.
Choose components
Ingredients. Pretty self explanatory.
You’re going to use an orange candle (success, career, action), Crown of Success oil (or olive oil charged with your intention), basil, and bay.
Create central symbolic action
This will represent “the larger change in the world that you wish to make. Performing it, in conjunction with the raising and releasing of energy towards your goal, is what triggers the change you desire.
Notice how I italicized ‘symbolic’ up there? In this case, the symbolic action is burning the candle. This must also be done in conjunction with a physical action, ie: submitting applications, sending out resumes, and following them up with phone calls.
Write the text of the spell
Do I have to explain this?
I hope this helps you out, Nonny.

I’m not sure if this graphic would be helpful to any other beginner witches, but personally I wanted to make it to clear up some things to myself. NOTE: This is how /I/ understand the topic. For more witchy art, go here.

May You Finally Learn of the Pain You Have Caused
Several of my friends and I have been plagued by some rather unsavory people. Many times I suggested cursing, but always while I was extremely angry and not thinking very well. After calming down tonight we discussed a much milder spell that simply makes people acutely aware of the pain and anger they have caused, and to not forget it for quite some time.
Supplies:
One red (or any color you associate with anger) candle.
A candle holder.
A small bowl, preferably in a color that you feel connected to (I used an orange one).
Some water (I used some from a bottle I happened to have. Since I live in the desert and have to hide what I do, moon, rain, sea, and storm water isn’t exactly something I can use, but if you have something that works for you, use that).
A lighter.
A smallish piece of paper.
A black pen.
A red pen.
A smallish length of string.
Any stones, candles, music, etc. that may enhance your powers.
Prep:
Clean the area of anything you don’t want to be contaminated with angry energy. Remove any clothes or jewelry you don’t want contaminated, either.
Collect whatever you use to cleanse yourself, your tools, and the area around you after working with bad energy.
Write out what the person has done to you with the black pen I recommend writing it in a way that flows most naturally to you. If you’e an eloquent motherfucker, write some bomb-ass poetry. If you feel more comfortable writing “u fucked up my shit,” by all means write that out. Just make sure it feels Right (revision may be needed). End it with “May you finally learn of the pain you have caused.” Then, write their name or whatever you most know them as (like “Asshole” or “Vomit-Filled Condom”) above it in red.
Do whatever you do before casting a spell-cast a circle, light a candle, etc.
Turn off/put away anything that might distract you, then turn off the light(s).
Getting This Show on the Road:
Sit with the empty bowl in front of you, with the candle behind it.
Light the candle, then pour the water into the bowl. You might want to visualize this person’s ill will seeping into the water as it pours into the bowl.
Gently dip your fingers into the bowl, and begin envisioning the subject as best as you can.
Speak their name, then say “You are guilty of…” and then read off what you have written.
Close your eyes and imagine all the bad things they’ve made you feel circling them, faster and faster.
Say “This is what you have done,” then roll up the paper, wrinkling it a little. Tie it as tight as possible wit the string. Say “May you never forget it/May you remember this for X amount of time/whatever you see fit.”
Close your eyes again, imagining all your pain, anger, anxiety, etc. crashing into them, then blow out your candle.
Store the roll of paper. I recommend not throwing it away, in case you want to end the spell sooner, or intensify it. If you’re confident in what you’ve done though, dispose of it in any way you choose.
Do whatever you need to do to cleanse yourself, your tools, and the area around you. Then, treat yo’self. You deserve it.
I wrote this spell with the intention of casting it on someone that’s REALLY pissed me off. Not because they cut me off while driving or some shit, but because they have seriously hurt me or someone I care about. Please keep this in mind as you consider doing this.

Study tips for herbalists
A lot of people ask me about how to start learning about herbs and which courses are good, so I decided to put this together for you guys!
Resources
Herbmentor.com
Here are a few useful herbs that are good to start out with
Check out my recommended books
Paul Bergner has excellent information and courses available here
The East West School of Planetary Herbology is a great place to take courses
The Lunar Apothecary is a great for leaning about herb magic and lunar herbology
This website will help you to find local plants (USA only)
Bear Medicine Herbals
Herbcraft.org
Herbal Remedies Advice
HANE is also a good school to check out
Tips
Check out local plant societies to see what activities they have planned. Some of them offer free plant walks that will help you to get to know your local plants
Start experimenting with your (safe) local weeds first. For many of you, this means sorrel, dandelion, plantain, violet leaf, and ground ivy.
Get your warnings and safety information from reputable books and herbalists, not social media (tumblr). There are many rumors on this site about what is and isn’t poisonous, please don’t believe everything you read!
Keep a few materia medica books on hand to check for contraindications and safety instead. My go-to books for checking whether an herb is okay with me are located in the recommended books post above
Pick 1 herb a month to really focus on. Keep in mind that you can do a lot with a few herbs, some of them have dozens of uses
Learn about your herbs by tasting and using them, not just reading! Personal experience is more important than book knowledge (except when it comes to safety)
Equipment
JARS (check the thrift store for cheap finds)
Alcohol - I usually use 80 proof vodka for tinctures but you can also use brandy depending on what you’re making
Oils- I like grapeseed oil and coconut oil
Funnels
Cheese cloth for straining herbs
Kitchen scale
French press (easy way to make loose leaf tea)
Idea of what to start making with herbs
Bruise/injury salves
Bug sprays
Calming tinctures/teas
Digestive tinctures/teas
Pain tinctures
Fomentations
Poultices
I probably forgot a lot of stuff so Ill be adding more in the future!

The Importance of Salt in Witchcraft
In witchcraft, as in biology, you cannot survive without the use of salt. Salt is the ultimate purifying agent, and it has extensive ritual and spell usages that every single magick-using culture has come to recognise and use. Everything from Terry Pratchett to Supernatural has used salt in their work related to magic lore, and this is because it’s extremely common in real-world customs, traditions and rituals.
Important Witchy Facts About Salt!
Salt is a cleanser. Salt is used when we cast circles and bless items; it is used when Sumo wrestlers purify the ring before a fight; it is used when a kitchen witch scrubs down their tabletop; it is used when a Christian priest wishes to cast out demons; it is used when a butcher wants to kill germs. Salt is the ultimate cleansing agent, killing not just microbes but malicious or negative magicks, holding them at bay and driving them out.
Salt is a barrier. Salt lines around doors, windows, beds and even houses have been used for thousands of years as methods of driving back dark forces and keeping bad spirits at bay. Negative magick and bad spirits cannot cross a line of salt, and often touching it is said to be enough to kill them (or at least burn them). Scattering salt grains before a fae will force the fae to stoop to count every single grain, because they’re a bit obsessive and can’t leave it alone.
Salt is cheap and safe. This is actually pretty important, because whilst some magickal items (like candles, pentagrams and athames) are kind of indisputably witchy, salt is not only cheap, safe and generally useful, it’s also something that you HAVE to have because humans NEED salt to survive. So, for those secret witches who might live at home with unaccepting parents, or in a country that does not permit witchcraft, it might be the only tool you can always have access to that won’t be questioned.
Salt is versatile. You can use salt in all kinds of different rituals and practices, everything from cleansing a circle to blessing a wand to calling down a curse. Salt is something that has many potent ritual properties, and it’s an essential part of almost all magic.
Mineral salts:
Look. I’m not gonna judge if you want to use fancy pink salt or whatever. That’s your call. All I’m saying is, it’s really expensive and it’s literally no different to the cheap table salt you get from the shops. Magickally speaking, salt is salt. Magick doesn’t care if it’s Himalayan mountain salt or if it’s Woolies Homebrand table salt. Don’t waste your money! Honestly, it’s not worth it unless there’s a very specific reason to do so.
So, keep a stash of salt in your house! It’s an awesome thing to have for magick, and boy is it good to eat too!
