I wish we got to see more of Ozpin's past lives and in particular his own inheritance of the curse. Give us a 3D model of the warrior king you fucking cowards. Give us teenage Ozpin!

How old do you think Oz is? And how that affects his perception of time, how he see death, morality and mankind as a whole. IDK, dude feels alien to me and my brain explodes in trying to get the man.

Ozpin himself gave us at least a general sense of his age in “Unforeseen Complications”: 

“For thousands of years I have walked the surface of Remnant; living, dying, and reincarnating in the body of a like-minded soul.” 

If it had only been a thousand years he probably would have said that, so the general assumption is that it has been at least two thousand years, perhaps longer. However, here he’s describing only his reincarnation. So to my mind it’s at least 2k + his original lifespan up until he died of illness. That is… so much. That is so very, fucking, unimaginably much. 

Ozpin’s age is partly why I defend him because yes, his experiences are alien. Imagine you had GENERATIONS of experience under your belt and were then being talked back to by a teenager who’d been out of school a year. How seriously would you take them? Imagine you had LIFETIMES of trauma and betrayals weighing you down. How easily would you trust again? Every time someone insists that Ozpin should have done X, Y, or Z–implying that these are easy things to accomplish and therefore the only reason he didn’t do them was because he’s a horrible, manipulative person–hasn’t bothered to put this into perspective. People stumble after a single trauma and need years, if not their whole life, to recover. People get backstabbed once and have trouble ever trusting again. People grow older and realize that there’s a difference between respecting teens and acknowledging that they still have a lot to learn. Now take that average human experience and multiply it by an unimaginable amount. Now factor in that we perceive time as speeding up as we get older, so Ozpin is subjectively losing loved ones faster and faster. Now take away any real support system or mental health services.Now keep in mind that this situation isn’t going to end any time soon, if ever. … Now acknowledge that despite this, Ozpin has done a damn good job. 

Ozpin still fights for mankind. He’s still patient and caring towards his hosts. He still praises RWBYJNR for having a sense of humor. He still wants kids to be kids while they can. He’s still terrified of death for others. He’s lived countless lifetimes, has god-like power at his fingertips, and is still humble enough to get down on his knees and beg a 17yo for mercy instead of just taking what he wants. And when she doesn’t show him any? Ozpin still arrives three days later to save her life. 

Brain exploding is right. Living 2000+ years is staggeringly hard for us to conceptualize. Imagine going to college 500 times. Or celebrating a 30th birthday over 66 times. Or living through 20 generations where you always reach 100. It’s insane. For me, partly what makes Ozpin a hero is his ability to care so much in the face of all that time.

Hkshvkj wait I misunderstood your AU. If Ozpin is alive why is Oscar there?

*slams a stack of papers down on a desk* ALRIGHT FUCKERS ITS INFO DUMP TIME

i’m kidding you’re not fuckers i love you all very very much. anyway

the deal with this au is that it diverges from canon right at the start of volume 4. ozpin pops into oscar’s head as per usual and oscar, who’s very definitely Not Having This Shit, manages to kick ozpin’s aura out of his head using magic. the aura turns into a physical person— ozpin— and oscar, after overcoming his shock, tells ozpin to get out.

ozpin, albeit very surprised that this incarnation managed to unlock their magic powers much earlier than usual through sheer teen angst and rage, and also shocked that he now has a body again after straight up dying, decides “ok yeah this is probably for the best, don’t want to endanger yet another child if i don’t have to” and leaves.

but of course, this doesn’t work out, and ozpin shows back up at oscar’s farm an hour later announcing he can’t leave.

not because oscar is destined to join him or anything, but because there was a bit of a problem when oscar separated their auras.

you see, what oscar had done was he took a look at his and ozpin’s aura and yeeted out whatever didn’t look right (read: ozpin) with no regards for being careful. he didn't take into account that his and ozpin’s aura are so intertwined and tangled that they’re near-impossible to cleanly separate. and so, what happens is oscar’s aura is left with parts of ozpin’s, and ozpin’s aura is left with parts of oscar’s.

this ends up meaning that ozpin, when he left the farm, physically couldn’t go more than a mile from oscar before the bits of oscar’s aura in him realized they’re too far from the rest of oscar’s aura and decided Hell No, ozpin cannot move any further without the rest of their missing aura.

ozpin explains this to oscar and oscar is, understandably, pissed upon finding out he’s been magically handcuffed to the wizard man. but, seeing as his options are 1. keep the wizard on the farm or 2. go on magical adventures with him (and as much as oscar denies it, he’s always wanted to be more than a farmhand), oscar realizes that maybe it’s time to leave the farm behind.

so oscar and ozpin set off together, and the adventure begins.

Want to know something funny? Don't feel bad - I actually really don't like Cloqwork! So no wonder I've had no luck finding fics! Sod's law. At this point I think I'm willing to at least try some Cloqwork fics if they star Oz, though, I'm in that desperation phase. (No hate to Qrow, but how come you eat up all the centric angst fics and the depressed millenia old wizard gets close to none!! Shakes fist)

Legitimately thank you for the links and summaries! Thie is way more high effort a response than I anticipated :) I hadn't heard of these and a couple do catch my interest.

I lovelove Oz lives too, I used to have an AU of it here on tumblr along with my friend @/dissonantharmony (I'll check that's still their @), I think there is so much creative potential to be found in there, especially in this latest scene with the Ever After (though that'd require a guy other than Jaune to get centre stage for once COUGH)

I wish we saw Oz fight more!! His climactic fight with Cinder is extra awesome because of the fact we've seen fuck all from him before it, but it's over in 30 seconds, and then subsequent showings have Oscar involved! It makes me so sad. I wish we got to see if he has a semblance, I wish we knew more details about his inheritance of the curse. It's extra interesting as I believe he directly followed the King of Vale.

PEOPLE ACTING LIKE OZPIN GROOMED THEM TO BE SOLDIERS IRKS ME SO BAD LMAO. He trained them to be warriors, in a world where if you're sad for too long monsters will rip you to shreds! A world with Salem, who can at any time decide to just wreck shop and obliterate an entire city! Everyone signed up for this, it's not a conscription thing, everyone in team RWBY could have opted to be a civilian if they'd wanted. Even Ruby - I'm not convinced Oz would have went after her for her eyes or anything, he clearly hadn't been keeping tabs on her like an Aizen figure, she was a genuine surprise when she rocked up going LETMEINLETMEINLETMEIN. Ozpin is smart and plans as best he can, but he's not machievallian like that.

Ozpin is absolutely suicidal, and carrying some industrial grade self hatred. We see it present in several past lives - a version stumbling along drunk and with bandages on his wrists who 'spent his life mourning', the Infinite Man who actively chose to be killed because he thought it would make things easier for his accidental cult. To Hazel he literally said he thinks he deserves to be tortured, despite the fact he's never been malicious and doesn't have a choice in his situation. But he keeps going anyway! It's almost certainly not his first rodeo tortured, we know he's been betrayed over and over and over, we've seen him die in some incredibly gruesome ways (being burned to death twice, ouch) and after all he's seen of humanity he has very little reason to continue believing, but he does anyway. I like to think it's that little fairytale determination he had in his first life, this cartoonish trait that was once perfect for slaying dragons to save medieval cities! And is now the tiny little part of him that keeps him from succumbing to despair.

...I too have many thoughts and feelings about this guy.
