actually ill expand on this a little bit cause when i posted it i was quite drunk.

while it is true that late stage capitalism sets the stage for the victimization of the crew and the entitlement/abuse from curly and jimmy, however i still hold my opinion that the thing that SHOULD be focused on IS the abuse and how the characters treat each other and fail each other. Capitalism is the stage yes, but the plot is about letting abusers abuse people with no consequences, the plot is femicide and misogyny, the plot is patriarchy. i dont think that people are really interpreting it wrong, but i do think that people arent really considering the complexities of it.

the focus isnt capitalism imo, the focus is letting abuse run rampant and unchecked. curly rolled over and didnt do anything about jimmys consistent displays of toxicity, manipulation, and abusive tendencies. jimmy didnt see anja as a person, just a simpering sack of meat, and he barely saw anyone but curly as anything more than that. swansea could only give minor disappointment the entire time until the story ramped up(even when he found out about the assault), and even then, his 'revenge for daisuke' was a hallucination of jimmys. daisuke was a bystander who was woefully unprepared and oblivious.

ive seen far too many people pretend like jimmy doesnt exist or that curly was the hero of the story, and that is such an insane take on this media that im actually astounded. the devs all but shoved it in our face that curly was a morally ambiguous character that chose to protect/ignore his friend and the terrible actions he was taking. we literally see him do it consistently, every single time theres an issue with the guy. and jimmy shouldnt be censored out of the story, pretending an abuser doesnr exist doesnt make the abuse go away. jimmy is a very real type of abuser, i myself have been abused by jimmys before. while calling him jabortion and jimesmee is funny, i feel like it got to a point where people were almost refusing to say his name as if he was the boogeyman.

AND ALSO im so tired of these people woobifying anya, shes not a shy insecure loser, shes not a snivelling fool. even if she was actively fawning to jimmy, do you not think that was a trauma response and not her being a sad sack of shit? personally i think she was either being sarcastic, trying to keep herself safer, or that jimmy was hallucinating it. stop being all like "uwu baby anya shy sweet thing" that is a grown woman who is a victim of repeated sexual assault and consistent emotional and verbal abuse from someone in a place of power. just please please please do more than watch a playthrough once, there are so many details that yall are missing.

you can say it’s poetic. you can say it’s situational irony. but you can’t call it justice. what happened to him was not just. it solved no problems, protected no one, and the scale of the “punishment” was incredibly brutal compared to the passivity of the crime.

and if it was just, why were the consequences so out of proportion? why did the actual perpetrator suffer less? why did the victim suffer consequences at all? the story is not about justice. being abused isn’t justice; being tortured isn’t justice; disability is not a punishment.

mouthwashing is a good game. but i hate that so much of the discussion nowadays (as opposed to what it was like early on when I got on the boat, before it blew up) is whether or not curly is a good person. if that’s what you focus on i’m sorry, you’re missing the point. curly is a real guy. there are guys in this world that are in the same position, and also chose to do nothing, and ive seen them. he is a participant in rape culture by protecting jimmy. this isn’t somehow me moralizing curly, it’s just what his character represents. but if you cannot help yourself and feel as if liking a “bad” character makes you a “bad” person instead of looking at what curly’s character symbolizes then just. idk what to tell you. you’re just not understanding the assignment, and maybe shouldn’t worry about it. spend less time arguing about whether or not he’s a good or bad person and try to engage with what his character is saying about broader rape culture. i implore you! engage with what this game is saying! please!

blaming neopronouns and non binary genders and nonhuman genders and bisexual lesbians/gays and multigender gays/lesbians and "weird" queer identities for being the reason why cisheternormative society doesn't respect us is missing the mark by a country mile- the queerphobic cishet people who scream slurs at queer people and attack us don't know what a neopronoun is. they don't know that people identify with nonhuman genders. they don't know what any of these smaller identities are, because they're not spending time inside the community with us. someone who isn't inside of the community doesn't understand our labels. they don't know that genders beyond male and female exist, do you think they know what a xenogender is, and hate our entire community for how "ridiculous" nonhuman genders are? of course not

all they see is "faggot" "tranny" and "dyke". that's all they see. they have no fucking clue what a neopronoun is, or a bigender person, or a bisexual lesbian, or a lesboy, or a girlfag. they can't even wrap their heads around genderfluidity and non binary genders. we are not the reason queerphobia exists, and we will never be the reason cisheteronormative society hates you or any other queer. they hate us because we're queer. that's it. they don't care about what kind of queer we are. they don't respect any of us- especially you. you are not immune to queerphobia. no matter how "normal" of a queer you are. no matter what.
