Why did I put dashes (-) in my fast fashion post?? People are going to think it was generated by AI. It was not. It doesn't help that I'm meticulous about spelling.
My stance on generative AI is as follows: no.
It's pretty pointless in my eyes and poorly regulated. There are jobs being threatened by it and hallucinations are a big issue, making it unreliable. It's used as a search engine by many, which is concerning. To me, it's just a fancy new-ish toy that everyone wants to play with and take everywhere (by integrating it into everything).
The most frustrating thing is that there is no choice with technology anymore. Things like genAI are shoved down our throats with constant popups. Bloatware comes with devices and can't be uninstalled. I don't want Adobe as my default pdf reader, damnit. Stop asking me every time I look at my laptop, that popup is supposed to be switched off. I can't even take the back off my phone to take the battery out when it acts up.
I understand the conversation around genAI has a bit of nuance. It has to, because people use it. I try not to view the world in black and white, so I'll hear what others have to say. There has to be some common ground though, right? Surely not every genAI user likes every place the technology has been integrated. Surely some "AI artist" out there has beef with a chatbot on a banking website, or something.
I've got to stop making these long rambly posts, all I wanted to say is that I don't use genAI. I haven't been accused, but there's only a matter of time before my robotic typing style catches up with me. I simply type how I think.

I read that you don’t like to buy from fast fashion. Could you please explain what exactly does it mean and how to understand which brands are fast fashion brands. I had a look online but I couldn’t fully grasp the meaning.
From my understanding, fast fashion is clothing that has been produced quickly and cheaply to capitalise on trends. It's biggest problems include:
Wastefulness - fast fashion websites often encourage people to buy a lot to get a discount, or keep their prices as low as possible to encourage people to purchase a lot of items without worrying about the cost. The garments are poor quality and are not made to last a long time. After the trend has passed, many products end up in landfill.
Environmental impact - Though the garments aren't made to last, their materials are. Cheap fabric is usually some sort of plastic, like polyester. Even just washing the clothes can cause water to become contaminated with small pieces of plastic.
Exploitation - Labourers are underpaid to keep retail costs low while still turning a profit for the company. Working conditions can be dangerous due to cheap materials, sometimes containing high levels of substances like lead. Working hours are long due to high demand for clothing to be delivered as quickly as possible.
That's basically what fast fashion is and why I prefer to stay away from it. Many fast fashion brands are online shops, though I have bought from H&M in the past due to them having a physical store in my country and me being uneducated.
Fast fashion retailers include: Shein, Temu, Pretty Little Thing, H&M, Zara, Fashion Nova and Boohoo, to name a few. Lots of Amazon storefronts have names that look like a keymash that also stock random trendy products. A sign that a brand is unethical is if they aren't transparent about their supply chain. If a brand has a chance to brag about sustainability, you can be sure that they'll do it.
While it's best to try stay away from stores like that, people don't always have the financial means to buy from other brands. It's a nuanced conversation, but my beliefs boil down to: Thrift what you can and keep consumption to a minimum. Buy what you know you'll wear, don't just purchase to keep up with a trend. I'm fortunate to have thrift shops near me that still have reasonable prices, as well as the skill to alter and customise clothes to a certain extent.

The Specials are a ska band. they don't exist anymore, but they were very influential to how modern third/fourth-wave ska-punk sounds. i can preach how their impact on the scene is what worth makes them checking out alone, but their "greatest hits" album is also genuinely just good
Ohhh. I didn't connect the previous ask to my question in the community, so I was very confused. Thank you for the recommendation! I still need to get around to listening to what other people have recommended to me, but I'll definitely check out The Specials.

It's always so terrifying to tag something as punk when I post on here because what if someone random person "yells" at me with words on a screen?
I love a lot of the music. I have hopes to support my local scene if I eventually find it (I also have anxiety, hate loud noise and fear people, but that does sound like a bunch of lousy excuses (working on doing what I can though)). I make stuff for the joy of creation and to inspire others to make things too. Buying from fast fashion is something I try to avoid doing knowingly. I try to help people where I can, though it's difficult to talk to strangers. I value community and enjoy partaking in local events.
People don't know that about me though, nor do they know what others do that show they care about the subculture. All they see is what gets posted. If some young person makes their first scruffy patch with some political slogan painted on it, should punks not aim to educate about the importance of the music and other core values? Or at the very least warn the person to put the political stuff on the front of their vest for their own safety? Education is a great tool and knowledge can be dispensed in a kind way.
I'm not talking about obvious ragebaiters. Ignore those and block them if you don't like what you see. For those who truly want to learn, be patient and kind. Answer questions honestly.
Many baby punks' first exposure to the subculture is through the internet, which can be a misleading and obviously hostile place. I still consider myself a baby punk because I know how much I have to learn and how many great bands I still have to discover, but also for fear of how harsh people can be to those who call themselves punk.
What is punk to some may not be punk to others. The important thing is to listen and learn. The history we have of the subculture is incredibly valuable and should not be left to rot. A big part of keeping a culture alive is knowing where the culture came from to begin with. It didn't start with a bunch of people sharing identical values and ideas and it definitely won't end with it.
I'll get off my virtual soapbox now, but if you take one thing away from this post let it be that education is kind, because punk sure isn't always.
If you read all that, thank you and have a good day.

I made a thing and I like it very much. I kept running into unforseen problems and MacGyver-ing my way out of them (meaning I just thought as creatively and practically as I could). It does contain can tabs (not seen in the picture) as any good DIY should (/j). It's nice to make my own stuff for a multitude of reasons. One of those reasons is that I can make stuff that actually fits. Working on one for my neck next!
