So I have noticed there are some mixed reactions to the Bucky Barnes Dishwasher Sceneā¢ļø from Thunderbolts* and I know Sebastian Stan has said he didnāt find it funny and didnāt find it necessary. Naturally I am here to drop my take on it
Buckyās metal arm started out as a symbol of him becoming the Winter Soldier. He loses it when he falls off the train and HYDRA gives him this titanium arm and itās a major centerpiece of his character as the Winter Soldier
Flash forward to the titanium arm getting destroyed by Tonyās unibeam and Bucky eventually gets a new vibranium arm in Wakanda. A major turning point where heās no longer sporting the titanium with the big red star that defined his career as the Winter Soldier
But Bucky is still uncomfortable with it. We see him wear long sleeves and gloves, constantly covering it up. Itās a sore spot for him. But we gradually move away from that. He starts wearing shorter sleeves, he loses the gloves, it doesnāt become about hiding the arm so much anymore (heck at the end of TFATWS the kids are playing on it like a jungle gym and Bucky doesnāt have a care in the world!)
Flash forward again to Thunderbolts* and we get a scene of just Bucky alone in his apartment and heās just a clumsy little dork who spills food all over his shirt while reading. He throws his arm in the dishwasher to clean it. And to me that just represents him becoming more comfortable with it. Something that has defined such a terrible part of his life and now we have this silly little domestic scene where he just⦠throws his prosthetic into the dishwasher. And I think itās hysterical and heartwarming to see the growth in that
View it however you want but thatās my take on it. Am I looking way too deep into it? Maybe. But hey, I got nothing better to do lol
#i should definitely be in bed#but alas this has been gnawing at me for ages#and I wanted to finally get these thoughts out#is it comprehensible?#somewhatā¦#bucky barnes#sebastian stan#marvel#mcu#thunderbolts*

Thinking about the trope of the good person manipulated into doing a bad thing by the villain using threats of violence against them.Ā
I realise that Bucky is so good that this trope doesnāt apply to him,Ā because Hydra tried violent punishments and threats of more against him, and it didnāt work.Ā
They had to add brain damage, drugs, andĀ amnesia on top of that.Ā
And, they still had to try and trick druggedĀ brain-damaged amnesiac Bucky into obeying willingly (eg. telling him that what they were making him do was good, protecting people, bringing peace, etc.)
And even then, brain-damaged, drugged, and with no memory of who he was to contradict their ideals, Bucky wouldnād do as he was told; he hesitated, he questioned.Ā He had to be given mind-control trigger words on top.Ā
In the MCU, Buckyās goodness is so intrinsic a part of him that total amnesiaĀ wasnāt enough on its ownĀ to make him do bad.Ā
#i will die on this hill#Bucky has NEVER been a villain#and everybody can fight me on that#thank you and goodnight š#bucky barnes
