Whisper and slinger childhood friends

everybody listen the hell up to me they've been friends since first grade as the two with obvious disabilities -- slinger was born with only one ear and whisper has weak knees + her kneecap dislocates for fun and profit . and slinger figured out he was gay as hell at age 9 and whisper didn't figure out she was gay until literally the year he died. thumbs up. he was the number 1 whisper protector forever <3

Sudden idea I think is actually really fun, the Babylon Rogues aren't currently planned to be really relevant in my AU, Metal Breakers. There's only one story arc I planned where they'd have any substantial role. But I thought of something involving them that I think would be really fun, which is Tails loving Jet. I don't know why but I suddenly had this idea, since Metal Breaker Tails is usually really stoic and serious it would be really entertaining if for some unknown reason Jet's cocky personality and constant taunting actually made Tails laugh and he was just like "I like this guy he's funny"

so yeah like it’s pretty harsh lol

the thing is… this is all how it feels in her own head. this is how she got impacted. but man her own story about her isn’t the ONLY story about her. and uh… she knows that

the reason she’s so hazy and fragile post-#64 and thru the riders arc (and perhaps into #79) is because there are two very important stories still unfolding right around her, real stories, that she herself is part of… but doesn’t feel connected to

one of those stories is tangle’s, and like… there’s… she trusts tangle. probably with her life, definitely with her heart and her wellness… most of al lake trusts tangle as her ground. her rock

there’s even the chance for her to reconnect there. the chance. they really do try. but uh, for lots of reasons mainly circumstantial, it goes pretty bad

(mimic spontaneously outing himself isn’t a big help either LOL)

meanwhile with lanolin, well gee, look, clearly she doesn’t have like… “let’s kick whisper off the team” beef, clearly she thinks whisper still belongs, clearly… clearly…

it’s not really a mystery that she’s re-centering after all these events. i mean, it’s harsh, but they’re parting ways anyway. she’s had a time of it. mimic is here and dangerous now, it’s on, it’s time

she’s made peace with the others about as best as she can in this moment. it’s really not great, and there are Problems, but… right now… she’s gotta work some stuff out for herself. and square one? getting someone who keeps inserting himself into her life, not just as a memory or phantom but as a freaking assassin, to screw right off

so yeah, like… tangle’s coming along

they’re in this together

but whisper is here for herself. that’s how she’s going to be the person she wants to be. hellish though it is…

because i am fictive and canon brained and like uh. sorry. but the diamond cutters 2 is over. and this IS her story, going forward, and it has BEEN her story, this whole way… so talking about branched off hypotheticals kinda breaks my brain lmao

fanfics where the relationship between lanolin + tangle & whisper is portrayed as ‘tangle and whisper never let her ‘in’ to their group and make lanolin miserable’ make me so sad

cause A: i don’t think tangle would do that. she loves making friends and having her friends all in one place, and especially before anything happens between them she wouldnt have any reason to be closed off towards lanolin. and the main reasons between tangle and jewel not having much time together were jewel being busy as director of the restoration and tangle being busy with her own missions and adventures (and not entirely tangle’s fault, since jewel was equally capable of asking tangle for some hangout time if she wasn’t a workaholic) - so especially with lanolin being on the same team, there’d be little reason not to spend time together, even just for training or missions.

B: whisper might do that and it’s fairly reasonable, considering how much tangle had to work at it to connect with her in T&W and how much difficulty whisper has now forming connections with people, out of fear of being hurt again. she’s more likely to shut lanolin out than tangle, so i can see some situations where tangle leaves whisper in her ‘comfort zone’ and does stuff just the two of them… but also many situations where tangle encourages the *opposite*, to try and get whisper to form more connections. and even still, whisper’s been getting better about opening up! we can see she HAS healed some over the course of the comic! less desperate, more happy where she is :)

my reading of canon is that they’re compatible as teammates, they just didn’t come together well at first - all just a little off compared to each other, rough edges turned out. and i don’t think any of their behavior gets to the ‘toxic’ point

(plus i see ‘all the paperwork being foist onto lanolin’ a lot… which seems an exaggeration for the purpose of worsening their relationship. certainly jewel would ask for some paperwork done, but… she knows tangle, and intentionally set up a team dynamic that’s set up more for action and ventures for tangle’s sake - she’s not going to ask for 4 hours of paperwork filled per day! and while i can see tangle wanting to avoid paperwork, she wouldn’t if she knew it was burdening lanolin - she’s not cruel or THAT avoidant of responsibility! and she WAS doing things like inventory/stockroom duty with jewel. writing her as ‘cant do paperwork because too distractible’ is firstly discounting ways of helping people focus, ie tangle fidgeting with her tail or a fidget toy while doing paperwork, and secondly reducing tangle to a flanderized version of herself, she isn’t JUST bouncy and excitable, and she isn’t ALWAYS 100% fullspeed hyperactive, and she isn’t JUST goofy physical fighter, and by no means is she brawn without brains…)
