Ernie Davis’ full article about learning about his diagnosis and that his professional career would be over before it even started but inspiring as he was to a nation gripped by his story the ending of the article would not be what fate had in store for him but as the article is aptly titled “I’m Not Unlucky” and his optimism is something I hope everyone affected by AML can appreciate and seek to imulate although it’s a tough outlook to take having lost someone to the disease. I will always insist we didn’t get enough time & how could this happen to the most health conscious person I know but upon reading this article in its entirety I can say she too was “Not Unlucky”. So if this doesn’t inspire you to give I don’t know what will and every dollar donated means we are a bit closer to our objective a cure. Donate at this like, my family greatly appreciates your support in this fight and of Claire becoming Woman of the Year 2019.

Read This It’s How I Think I’d Feel In The Situation
Nothing is going to be okay
Don’t tell me everything is going to be okay. We know that is not going to be the same again. I know people around me wants me to be okay and I want that too. But there’s a possibility of cancer not responding to chemo, even the possibility of it coming back after I finished the treatment, and no matter what how tough I am, it could kill me.
Ever since I was diagnosed with cancer, I knew the life I had before will be over. I knew my life, even if I survived this ordeal, will be different. I could not turn back to the life I once live. The side effects of chemotherapy are painful – overpowering – that people like me who are taking it just want to give up, and even the chemo could get me first before cancer gets me, and that’s not okay.
The fear, guilt, anger, sadness, and loneliness are some of the feelings I am constantly dealing with every single day, and it makes the ordeal even harder. You can easily say to me to just get over with it and you will be okay and be positive, but I just can’t. I can’t be positive every single day. It’s hard to cope up and just not to think of it when you’re in pain from the moment you get up from your bed until you sleep at night.
Every time I see my parents taking care of me, I feel sad and guilty. I was supposed to take care of them, but it became the opposite. Their life has been interrupted because of me. Their finances just to get me cured became a problem. When I see them smiling at me and acting like everything is going to be fine, it saddens me the most. I know they’re in pain, and they’re tired. And when I die, that could kill them.
I know it’s hard to understand the ordeal I am going through. It’s not that easy. We wouldn’t have shed tears if cancer is just like any other diseases that when you’re cured, it’s over, that we don’t have to worry and just move forward with our lives – but that’s not the case. Cancer sucks.
For the years I would live, for the hours and days and months, I just hope for the people around me, for my parents, to come to terms with it and accept whatever the outcome would happen. I will still try to live my life to the fullest and do the things I wanted before I die, for all we know everything is not going to be okay.

“Your disease took you away, but not before you put a contagious smile on my face and yeah, I’m not always doing just fine, but today… I’ll try to be okay, I’ll try my best because in your memory, dear stranger of mine– you won’t die, in these poems, you’ve got a forever home.”

“But when I look back I can’t call myself unlucky…In these years I have had more than most people get in a lifetime.”
—Ernie “The Express” Davis #47
An athlete who was at the peak of his game and was making history as an African American student athlete got the diagnosis that he had LEUKEMIA and although drafted by the Browns would never play another down again. He was asked to write an article bc he was such an inspiration to people from all walks of life and this statement came out of it. The wise words came from a 23 year old man who knew the end was nearing but that he had a whole lot to say about those 23 years he was blessed with.
At 23 I don’t think I’d have had the poise and the grace that this superstar who never was (@ the pro level bc he’s a college football Hall of Famer) did in saying this. Me I’d want MORE JUST BECAUSE OTHERS WOULD HAVE IT but he accepted his destiny and shared it with the world.
Individuals like him fight the same battle as he did day in and day out without the support system of the NCAA Syracuse University the NFL President John F Kennedy and the whole country behind them BUT THEY DO GET UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT FROM ONE ORGANIZATION The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is there for all affected by blood cancer whether your the patient or family.
This cause is close to my ❤️ and I ask you to donate at the attached link bc the potential funds will go towards research on the strain of Leukemia that killed this bright spot in a country that was racially divided & brought people together to cheer for him and the hope for a positive outcome. Today’s tumultuous climate is not unlike the one he had to break out into as an outsider worthy of respect, admiration, and following in his historic footsteps and wouldn’t be nice to come out of this era in our nation with a cure for the very disease that killed the talented halfback on May 18th 1963.
