i. torn down, full of aching Saul Silva should only be in his second year at Alfea. And, well, technically, he is. But he's been pushed ahead into the fourth year curriculum so he can graduate and get out into the field "for the war effort" sooner rather than later. That's what he gets for killing a Burned One before he even arrived on campus, he supposes. Still, he can't entirely bring himself to mind that his time as a student will be getting cut short. Being a Specialist is what he's good at and what he likes. Besides, he figures one day he'll have time to catch up on the academics he's missed, if he ever really needs them. On top of all that, taking classes with fourth years means taking ones Farah Dowling is also in. They know each other well enough and are friendly – he'd go as far as to say they're friends – after a year of being paired for training sessions. (Apparently he was declared best Specialist to her most powerful fairy at some point. As a result, the professors and especially the headmistress seem determined to get the most out of both of them, together and separately.) Beyond their value as soldiers, he knows they have quite a bit in common. He couldn't not know, not after they'd spent all of the past summer together and for the most part alone on campus. Learning they share the pain of not having anywhere to go back to during the few school vacations and no family waiting for them had been what brought them closer together than anything else they'd said in their many conversations. Somewhere in those months of break, that friendship had turned into more. On his part, at least. He can't be sure she feels the same but he can hope. And hope does he ever.
