No reason for posting this other than the fact that Sinners is trending and I want to start a discussion.

HELLO, my name is wordyneonlights and I want to talk about Remmick. When I went to see the movie with my friends it was glorious, Remmick as a character is extremely compelling and very well written and yes I'll admit he's fine. Not necessarily my type but I like a good vampire. Obviously MBJ for the WIN I was vibrating in my seat cause we got two of him at the same time. Anyways, when Rocky Road to Dublin came on I was jiving, that is a catchy song!! Of course I didn't agree with the context of it in regard to the movie itself but the song on its own had me doing a little jig. Anyways I loved Sinners and as with any movie I went to go see what the tumblrfolk thought of it only to come gave to face with alot of Remmick x Reader and Remmick x Sammie. So let's discuss.

Remmick x Sammie, Or Sammick

I really don't like telling people what to do as a girl who honestly ships mostly anything and if I don't ship it I don't make a big deal. As an MLB AND MHA girlie you kind of have to become a multishipper or drown.

All this to say that I usually don't make my ship opinions public but something about Sammick makes me very uncomfortable. See Remmick represents forced assimilation, he wants to steal and dilute Sammie's music something that is essential to the formers character. He stands for white greed, never satisfied with viewing only interested in taking. Now Remmick is interesting because he was once on Sammie's side of the equation- ok I'm getting sidetracked the point is that in this situation Remmick is the oppressor and Sammie is the oppressed and that sort of dynamic romantically is something I really do not like. And I'll say it outright it's because I'm a black woman. Being black is,among many other things, having to inherit the prejudices that have come from years of oppression and when black characters are romantically or even platonically paired with white oppressors yeah... I get a bit testy. It's also the nature of the movie and the message it was trying to send. Like, if you paid money to go sit down and watch Sinners and the most you got was Sammie × Remmick, it kind of says something about you. And I know shipping doesn't necessarily represent your moral code ( like, hey I like some toxic yaoi/Yuri as much as anyone, which granted isn't alot but you get my point. I would never support a toxic relationship in real life but it's interesting to see how certain characters would relate romantically ) but if Sammick is the shipping hill you choose to die on.... yeah I'm passing a bit of judgement.

Anyways onto

Remmick x Reader

There's actually a post on Tumblr that literally predicted the hype Remmick would have. Now, x Reader is alot harder to condemn or judge because it's different from shipping in quite a lot of ways.

I suppose the only real grievance I have is that there seems to be a real lack of my husband's the Smokestack twins and my lover Bo Chow but that is just tumblr's love for pathetic evil white men in full effect.

Untangling beauty from morality is actually alot harder than I thought it would be.

Like, on a base level it sounds easy: just because a person's pretty doesn't mean they're a good person

And by pretty I mean in any way that's attractive to you as an individual just for the sake of personalizing this conversation.

But then I catch myself thinking stuff like: she's too pretty for this and I have to stop and be like oh wait that's completely wrong. Because no one is 'too pretty' or 'too ugly' to act in a certain way and it just happens to be that I find this person nice to look at and they did something bad.

It's also the whole: too pretty to be acting like that which is also an odd statement to make. Like why do we equate attractiveness with morality?? Why is that the base expectation for people who we view as good looking. When, in reality it would be better for everyone else if we separated those two completely.

If we were to use correlation ( and now I'm talking on a societal level ) it could be argued that people who are conventionally attractive are often treated better and because of that they act in more conventional ways ... but then that may not be the most accurate way of looking at things as the skewed treatment of those who are viewed as conventionally attractive often leads to the fostering of negative traits like an over inflated ego.

But then there's a paradox because there's a tendency to excuse these behaviors because of the level of attractiveness but then condemnation because they're: 'too pretty to be acting like this'
