Nathanael ran, the landscape and mountains blurring as he stumbled and tripped and cursed his fate. The hailstorm was slowing him down, the ice battering his skin, and with the horror flashbacks playing on repeat, he was struggling to focus. The stench of blood and bile was choking, his airways blocked with snot and mucus, but he ran. He ran from the vampire who had slaughtered his family, blowing the fuse on his life with a fucking bang.
When he reached the beach, the hailstones cracked underneath his tread, and he slowed his pace to catch his breath. The skin on his feet had shredded, his soles bleeding, but he didn't dare try to stop and tend them. He shifted out of talent speed and staggered towards the shoreline, to a cave where he'd spent hours with his sister, watching the surf break as the aurora flooded the sky. It was their safe space, their secret, and the only place he knew of to hide.
He'd started running after the vampire stuck a dagger through his mother's heart, and hadn't stopped to check if the demon was following. His talent for stealth should have masked his escape, but the vampire could have caught their scent, drifting on the wind.
He lowered Johanna from his arms, placed her on the ground, and knelt to examine her. The cave floor was soaked with sea-water, and there was nothing to protect her from the damp and cold. She was shaking, her clothes in shreds, her body vibrating with every breath. Cuts and splinters had torn up her skin, and a stake from the fence had pierced her chest. She was bleeding out, a drip, a trickle, but if he tried to remove the stake, she would die. Vampires had few threats to their mortality, but a puncture through the heart meant certain death.
He picked up his sister and cradled her in his lap. What the fuck had he just witnessed? His family wiped out in seconds. Gone!
He'd stepped out for a smoke, then heard Johanna behind him, screaming his name. The explosion had blown them off their feet, sent them flying through the fence, onto the lawn. Dazed, it had taken him a moment to come around, to focus his thoughts and rouse his body, but the gunshot and ensuing scream had sent him running so damn fast, it had made his head spin.
Hiding in the shadow of the house, he'd stared at his father's corpse in horror, at the hole in his skull where the bullet had barreled through his brain. Fighting shock, and the tinnitus caused by the explosion, he'd tried to eavesdrop on the conversation between his mother and the vampire. They were talking of love, of times past and hearts betrayed, which made no sense, but their words told Nathanael this was no stranger. He wanted a name. But all he had was the motherfucker's face, which he wanted to smash with a sledgehammer.

The World of LOCO
Tumblr media
Welcome to the World of LOCO!
LOCO is a world ruled by the supernatural. A place that exists alongside (or, metaphorically, underneath) the world of humans, inhabited by vampires, shapeshifters, wizards, witches, faery folk, spirits, shades, and mermaids.
The World of LOCO is a catch-all title for a series of weird and wonderful tales, written by me, @ediejacks, and which take place in the Land of the Council Obscura.
The series begins with SHROUD - Nathanael's story - and Part 1 of SHROUD will be available to download soon. You can read more at ediejacks.com, and I’ll be posting regular updates here on Tumblr.
Disclaimer: The World of LOCO is adult fiction and not always safe for work, so no minors, please!
Please feel free to get in touch, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I’m really looking forward to sharing the World of LOCO with you :)
