The big secret to finishing stories is sitting down and doing it.  That’s it.  A lot of people will only write when they’re inspired, and that’s setting yourself up to fail.  Nobody can be inspired 100% of the time.  You can be inspired 10%, 20%, maybe even 50% of the time.  The rest of it is discipline and it’s essential you teach yourself that if writing finished stories is a long-term goal.

Let’s Talk Plotting

I’ve seen a bunch of posts lately in the writeblr-sphere about how to plot. And as we all know, everyone plots in their own way! So here’s my way.

First, I dream.

Literally. Every single wip I’ve ever had has come to me in a dream (this can also be a daydream). Usually that dream involves several characters and is either a pivotal scene or the climax scene.

(For those of you who want to try this method without the dreams at all, just take a major scene from your novel and do the same thing!)

Then I dissect the scene:

Who are the characters and what are their relations to each other?

How did we get here? What events lead up to this?

What is the next logical step? How will these characters react?

After that, I pick each point and flesh it out:

I build my characters starting with their relations to each other. If they are best friends, why are they best friends? What do they do together that shows they are best friends? What would happen if something were to challenge that relationship?

Now that we know the characters, how did we get here? What kind of plot points make sense in chronological order for these characters? If we are witnessing a fight, what led up to that fight? Why are they fighting? What are they fighting about and how did that come into their lives?

Now that we know why they are fighting, what comes next? What is the resolution? Does one storm off to go do heroic things? What does the best friend do? Does the best friend let them have their moment, or do they go after to try and help to the best of their abilities? Does something else come up that delays the best friend from reaching the hero in time?

And that’s it!

Now obviously there’s a lot more work to be done than just what I have outlined here. Heck, there’s real writing to do! That’s the hardest part! But this is the bare bones of how I get my plotting down.

Top 11 Tips for Staying Inspired on Long-Term Projects

for the writer whose inspiration keeps running away.

Recognize that inspiration is, essentially, a faceless trickster deity and, to control it, you must be very, very clever.

Feed it carefully. If you want it to focus on your dark fantasy rather than your optimistic science fiction … feed it darkness, feed it magic, feed it the grimmest of aesthetics.

Remember that you only have so much creative energy. Use it wisely.

Set up a reward system. If you finish this draft, you can print it. It can be on your shelf. Your book. On your shelf. It exists!!

Remind yourself why you started it in the first place. Make a concise list of all the things you love about it (and conveniently forget those that you don’t) and pin up on your bathroom mirror. Add to this list.

Share it with a close friend. Make them love it. Make them want to read it to the end. Make them promise to swear at you if you don’t finish it.

Set reasonable goals and deadlines.

Let yourself take breaks. During your breaks, consider feeding your inspiration monster art and music and movies and peanut butter cookies.

Write down any and every idea. From the most bizarre to the most wonderful. Don’t discount anything.

Stay alive. You can’t keep inspiration if you don’t stay alive. Eat often (at least once a day), hydrate even oftener.

Find a writing community to scream at and just scream. AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
