There is some mention of Nazis and the Holocaust, but this story takes place at the end of the Cold War. Do be warned that there are deaths, a quick scene of war, and there is one (needless) suicide happening off stage. I'm sorry if there were more triggers I can't remember.

It is overall an uplifiting story, despite all the politics Takarazuka loves inserting to make the middle part drag. (eyeroll)

'The Prisoners of Lilac Walls' (Rira no Kabe no Shuujintachi) (Star 2010) subs

These subs were timed to the Bow Hall version with the Star Troupe. I timed it to a broadcast on Sky Stage but with some retiming it should fit the DVD release. Let me know if you have problems and I'll do my bets to help you do that, or you can use online tools like sub shifter And if you use VLC you can resync them on the go.

Note that they also filmed the day in Tokyo, and the subs won't sync to that one (the audio is quite inferior to the Bow version if you're in doubt which one you have). The lines should be the same, and you could use the subs as a script, though. That won't work for the Moon Troupe version with Kaname, as it was unfortunately heavily edited to fit whatever time retraints they had at the time.

Last, these subs were done by ear, so there will be more mistakes than usual.

Why I've been away

I've been postponing this post for reasons of having to write it, and I'm glad I didn't do it before because it would have probably sounded much worse.

You've probably noticed I haven't been releasing much, and for the same reason I haven't been replying most of the messages I get, so I thought I should be more honest with all of you.

Be warned for drama, or just skip to the end for the news. Or just scroll down to the next post.

Of course the state of Takarazuka doesn't make me so happy. Even if we don't touch the elephant in the room since the end of September, so many of my favorites are leaving this year. Sora is taidaning at this very moment actually. People leaving without having been able to shine their most is just the bitterest part of this, though Sora still got to do a whole lot, unlike my other favorites leaving. Too bad she had her chance too late for more. From time to time, Takarazuka makes me feel like it doesn't want me following, and with everything happening irl, it's even harder. However, that hasn't been the reason for my distance from here.

I haven't been well in my mind. I wasn't fine before because of how unstable my job was and how I couldn't find something else no matter how many resumés I sent out, and then I eventually did lose my job, and still couldn't get anything. It's been almost a year now. A whole year of questioning my whole life path, of trying to follow each advice and still not get anything. So yeah, I'm far far far from being well. I'm lucky enough I get to live with my parents even if that is also some curse when you don't have an alternative when it becomes too much. I'll stop here because you probably got the picture already and this is making my mind go places.

And no, I'm not here to ask for money lol Anyway, everyone in the fandom already helps me enough with anything I ask. I'm really grateful!

The intention is to first, let you know I'm not gone. I busy like crazy trying to stay together, and the times I'm not, I'm simply drained from living my life. So even if I did have projects I could be working on, I can't do it as much as when I was feeling better. For you to have an idea of how my rhythm has been, Yukinojo was the only one I did since I lost my job. However, I also still don't have the resources to fulfill the commitments I've made—Blackjack, missing the closed captions because Sky Stage never shows it, and Flügel, missing the script—so there is that too. It's the reason I dared try Yukinojo actually. (Though deep down I'm just too sad about Reiko's taidan to be going actively after it all...)

In sum, here's the state of things,

Blackjack - waiting for Sky Stage to get it back from war

Flügel - I don't have the script yet

Hoshi's Memy - some have asked me if I'll do this one. Hibiscus is already working on adapting the subs, so I'm gladly sitting out lol

Hanafubuki, Koi Fubuki - I've checked these subs so long ago and I still haven't gotten myself to work on the release. Shame on me.

Ai, Futatsu (from Yukigeshiki) - I was timing the Koma version to Chigi's so I could check them and see if I could get some more words, as I've done this by ear, then I ended up changing so much of the translation I'll have to retime them back to Koma's. Who knows when that'll happen... Even though it's just an hour long show, the lines are sooooo long and quick and crazy, speeding the video up to time faster won't do.

Prisoners of the Lilac Walls - unless you like checking my Next page, this will probably be news to you, but I've been low-key wanting to work on it for a long time. Now I've finally fulfilled my dream of finishing Yukinojou, I thought I could try this one. I'm doing Teru's version (the Bow one) solely by ear. I'm far enough to know I will release it so just have to cross your fingers I don't need to fanfic my way out of the ???'s. Despite the Nazi parts, it's a nice story, and I fell in love with Beni and Otoha since the first time I watched this. I know it's years too late, but I hope you can see what I saw.

Next? I've got my eyes on this or that, but I'm always hoping someone else will do it instead, so I'd better not say it and let others thinking I'm claiming anything.

In scene 4 "East China Sea", there is a song that mentions Qingming Festival. While the day is marked by people playing respects to the dead, it was also a time when young couples traditionally started courting.

The math in the song "24000 kisses" doesn't add up, but that's how the Japanese lyrics were...

The Winter's Tale subs

Scripts for other than Grand Theatre musicals are very hard to come by, but thanks to this excellent script collection for the Shakespeare series I managed to translate The Winter's Tale. There's no way I could have done this one by ear! There are a couple of lines where they depart from the script and I'm just taking a wild stab. (They're marked out with question marks - any help much appreciated.)

I commissioned the wonderful @paleosart to redraw Takarazuka's Bonnie & Clyde leads, Yumeshiro Aya and Ayakaze Sakina, as the iconic Barbie mugshot scene!

This musical has consumed my mind since it was first announced, particularly because it was the Top Musumeyaku debut of my princess Yumeshiro Aya! 2023 was a rough year with a lot changes in my life, but Bonikura and Aya had a part in keeping me sane. Barbie was also very important, it was a film I watched with my mom and best friend which gave me precious memories.

In short: Two things I love a lot now finally together! I hope everyone appreciate this beautiful art Paleo made! ♥️♥️♥️

'An Actor's Revenge (Yukinojou Henge)' subs

This was done mostly aurally, but even if it hadn't been, some parts were just so hard that there was no way I'd have gotten them right. So know this translation is far less accurate than usual.

I do love this play. After so many years thinking of it, I was starting to wonder if I hadn't imagined my appreciation but I was right. It's got a lot of wins. It's not perfect though. The resolution of the plot is so underwhelming you barely realize they've solved all the points. Still, it was worth all the hair I lost to translate this.

And of course, Ichiro, Tom, they're all wonderful. This was also Ohana's first Grand Theater as the top musumeyaku. Plus, there are some scenes all the characters would later become top stars/musumeyaku, it's impressive. And baby Touko as Fubuki's minion! So cute!

If you don’t know her but was a Daimon fan, please, discover this precious little thing!

Trigger warnings, same from the honkouen, and not limited to gun, war, death, white men being white men, racism, and so on. Those get very little screen time, except for the white men (though the actresses are neither, of course). Sorry, I should be bothered by a lot of things, but I laughed every time we got to the shirts scene, like... ugh. Considering all that, it’s amazing, but I still like and recommend this musical.

“The Red and The Black (Bluray 2023)”  subs

The translation was done aurally, so there will be more mistakes than usual, even if I did disturb a lot more people for this one. Special thanks to Penguin and Barafubuki, as well as the usual suspects I need to cry to.

I’m not a fan of this novel and I didn’t really like the old version (but it was a lot because this novel wasn’t really for me and not Takarazuka’s fault). And yet, this is a good musical. The songs are all good, I can’t think of any I didn’t like. Coto is amazing, as expected, but also more than I had expected. The cast is solid, and if I were to change anyone it would have been solely for personal preference.

'Manon' (2015) subs

I think someone else has already done the subs for this and that's why I never gave any priority to getting this release ready. Also, because I did the subs back when I couldn't even dream of strangers seeing it. So I apologize for the Vietnamese lines especially.

I did these subs as soon as I could because Masao was about to leave, it was around the time I did the first version of her Berubara before matchala worked her magic, so I was ultra emotional then. Even so, as it progressed, I couldn't help but frown at this script. I know the original is already hard to save, but there was so much more that could have been done to make it better. Or maybe it's supposed to be like that so we feel this bitterness in the end. (I doubt it was truly the intention but it's how I've come to read it, a white savior who can't even save his own ass.)

So many warnings for this... gunfire, orientalism, raceface, suicide, abusive relationship. There's definitely more too. Ueda Keiko is still a good director to deal with these themes with respect at least.

And the SONGS! The songs are the reason I still watch this show. They're so so so pretty at a level it's a waste on this story.

"The Rose of Versailles (2013 Moon) (Ranju André)" subs

This is a project in collaboration with @matchala who was just too patient to fill in the gaps, retranslate, edit, retime, and whatnot some partial old subs I had. Suddenly, it's all brand new! I'm just so happy this can finally be released!

To be honest, this was probably the worst adaption I've seen of Berubara. I mean, the gaidens are probably worse, but I bet they have more plot than this. They've cut so much of the original performances, they should have just made it like the gala concerts and it would have been more pleasing. STILL, this was the only tome Ranju Tomu was in a Berubara, and for many other reasons, this aberration became very dear to me.

(Also, I kinda love the selfish portrayal of Oscar Masao made.)

Notice this is timed to the show with Ranju Tomu as André. The script is the same as the others of 2013 Tsuki, but the timing won't sync as they're not really robots to do it all the same lol (They almost are when you notice they get almost every single word in the script but still not there). So, beware.

I'll be streaming "Nice Work If You Can Get It" (2021) next on my Rei streamathon series! I have never streamed this before and I could do so thanks to the generosity of @wtheckzukasubs!!! It's a very adorable tap dance show but also the original Broadway musical of the same name done by Takarazuka! I entered the fandom just when this started its run and didn't purchase merchandise on time and they were already gone due to copyright :( but ANYWAY!! i hope you all would look forward to this show !!
