This was done mostly aurally, but even if it hadn't been, some parts were just so hard that there was no way I'd have gotten them right. So know this translation is far less accurate than usual.

I do love this play. After so many years thinking of it, I was starting to wonder if I hadn't imagined my appreciation but I was right. It's got a lot of wins. It's not perfect though. The resolution of the plot is so underwhelming you barely realize they've solved all the points. Still, it was worth all the hair I lost to translate this.

And of course, Ichiro, Tom, they're all wonderful. This was also Ohana's first Grand Theater as the top musumeyaku. Plus, there are some scenes all the characters would later become top stars/musumeyaku, it's impressive. And baby Touko as Fubuki's minion! So cute!

I finished transcribing the the Ichiro Ohkouchi (G Witch series composition and script) interview included with the Season 2 Vol.3 Blu-Ray.

Here's a translation of the snippet about Suletta and Miorine's initial concepts:

Miorine, the deuteragonist, is a cool character. Did you mean for her to be a contrast to Suletta? Ohkouchi   Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury takes place on two main stages: the school and the corporate world. In the initial concept, Suletta was the protagonist of the school side, while you could call Miorine the protagonist of the corporate side. In those early drafts, Miorine stoically bore her burdens and was the mistress* of Suletta’s enemy – she was the direct opposite of her current character. The plan was to have Suletta and Miorine’s adverse circumstances reverberate against each other, until they finally meet and their destinies are transformed… something to that effect. But as we revised the scenario, we decided to place both of them in the school setting from the beginning. This way, the story became more straightforward and ignited more quickly – we could highlight their chemistry as soon as possible. Because we were writing an original series, instead of taking the audience’s attention for granted, we wanted to quickly start showcasing the story’s appeal. That's how we came up with the current version of Miorine, who has to take on the responsibilities of running a company while she attends the school. *TL Note: 愛人 (aijin); literal definition is “lover,” but its primary usage in modern Japanese is “a person, usually a woman, in a relationship with someone other than their legal spouse” aka “mistress”

Interesting that Mistress!Miorine was still a thing even after the pivot from the initial war-oriented concept to the school/corporate setting. The staff decided to make her a student character in order to bring Suletta and Miorine together earlier.

I will translate the rest of the interview as well but it's gonna take a while...

“I’m unfamiliar with Ichiro-kun. But I can’t say that I haven’t heard about him. A few coworkers have talked about him and his brothers, commenting on how helpful they have been. I’m sure that if I lived in the Ikebukuro area, I would be open to hiring him and his brothers as help.”

Samatoki Aohitsugi

“Apparently my brother knows of him thanks to his unfavorable history. I wish I could say more as to how I feel about him. As far as I understand it, the way some mafia members may be temperamental makes for a bad reputation, but their choice to stand on their own without the government is admirable. How they do it is questionable, so I doubt I can truly trust this Aohitsugi character.”

Ramuda Amemura

“I’m not big on fashion. I have heard of his brand however. The female students love to gossip about him, especially one particular student. I can’t say I feel strongly about him overall.”

Jakurai Jinguji

“I’ve met him once or twice when Ryuko landed himself in the hospital. Shinjuku is pretty close to our city after all, so it’s a convenient location. He is kind and I admire the amount of independence he has within his work environment. I suppose being a doctor has those kinds of benefits.”

Sasara Nurude

“Humor is something that is lost on me, so I’m not one to have met Nurude-san. Manzai is important part of history as a part of the long history of theater, similar to rakugo. I’m sure that Nurude-san is a great performer, but the fact he doesn’t have a ‘tsukkomi’ partner makes me wonder how he does on stage nowadays.”

Kuko Harai

“The way people describe Harai-san reminds me of Ryuko in some ways. A very wild child with strong principles… Harai-san is better at upholding his morals though in the form of his religion. Perhaps Ryuko could learn a few things, like meditation from Harai-san? I’m sure that there’s some benefits from spiritual activities that Ryuko could gain from it.”

Regardless of your personal favorites, who would you say were some of the most impactful otokoyaku in takarazuka's history? for example, I'd say I'm a fairly new fan, but i hear a lot about miki maya, yuki amami, yoka wao even nowadays. Maybe as a long time fan, you can give us some insight on who you think were some of the most significant otokoyaky? Thank you

Sure! This is like, me judging on vibes/stories basically... others may feel differently!

The first generation of top otokoyaku: Anna Jun (Flower), Haruna Yuri (Moon), Migiwa Natsuko (Snow), and Ootori Ran (Star). These were the prime participants in the "Berubara Boom," skyrocketing Takarazuka's mainstream popularity, and leading to the establishment of an official top star system.

Ooura Mizuki, considered one of the best dancers in Takarazuka history, went on to become an internationally renowned tango dancer. It's impossible to attribute this definitively to one person, but I also think she started a steady incline in the difficulty of Takarazuka choreography over the years.

Amami Yuuki, who you mentioned, was famed for her natural acting style, unusual for the stage at the time. She became the youngest top star ever largely due to her popularity, and the fear that she would be offered better opportunities on and off stage outside of Takarazuka. She has also had a successful career in movies and dramas, and is probably the biggest household name amongst OGs.

In my admittedly biased opinion, I think Mori Keaki and Ichiro Maki set the standard for top stars and nihonmono

Maya Miki was noted for actively studying everyday men and somewhat revolutionizing otokoyaku style (think charmingly disheveled suit vs. the traditional buttoned up tailcoat look). She has also had a successful TV/movie career post-Takarazuka and is a household name in Japan.

Wao Youka is the longest running top otokoyaku, and had extremely notable chemistry with Hanafusa Mari (whose record of 8.5 years and 5 husbands will likely never be unseated)

Yuzuki Reon was 2 months shy of Wao's record, similarly had notable chemistry with Yumesaki Nene, and was wildly popular. She and Maya Miki are the only two otokoyaku to perform in Nippon Budokan, which is 7x the typical Takarazuka venue seating capacity.

I also have to mention Nanami Hiroki for a different reason. While those above were IMO very influential otokoyaku in Takarazuka, Nanami Hiroki's graduation marked a notable turning point in the opportunities available in the entertainment industry to OGs who didn't make top. Prior to her graduation, it was fairly rare even for a top musumeyaku to get regular leading roles post-Takarazuka, never mind actresses who were not top stars. Nowadays we see a lot more of this. Miya Rurika has gone on record in print saying the breadth and success of Kai's OG activities have hugely influenced her and paved the way to "be herself" in her career, and we've seen a large number of 2 and 3-ranked former otokoyaku follow similar steps since.
