mickey 17 : my thoughts
context: a bong joon-ho directed film, mickey 17 is a sci-fi satire about a man (mickey barnes, who's played by robert pattinson) who signs up as an expendable on a space expedition to colonise a planet alongside his 'friend', timo (steven yeun), after their financial troubles on earth. the expedition, led by presidential candidate kenneth marshall (mark ruffalo) and his wife ylfa (toni collette), included hundreds of other crew members. on his mission, he is experimented on, used to explore this planet, and reprinted every time he dies. on his 17th print, he is reprinted without him actually dying (since timo thought he had died when he fell down a ravine). however, having multiple copies of oneself is actually illegal in this universe, so they must hide in secret and only come out one at a time. throughout, his 2 copies uncover the harsh reality and conditions of the mission.
in this movie, there are heavy implications about it being a parody of trump and the US. colonizing a planet and claiming it as your own, even when natives already inhabited it, is quite similar to trump's attempts to remove most all of the POC, even the ones born there, and revive the "white country" approach imo. also, I feel like it also had the message of the lengths humans would go to escape—like mickey and timo literally fled earth just to avoid confronting their debt and loan sharks—even if it means enduring harsh conditions.
however, in the end, i didnt really like it that much, unfortunately. i think its just not for me, though. still worth a try too!! if you're into the eternal sunshine, severance, and eeaao type of weird, I think this might suit you—although its not really similar to them. its more similar to snowpiercer, i think!!

this is going to hurt : my thoughts
context: this is going to hurt is a 2022 comedy-drama based on the creator's (adam kay) memoir about 2 junior doctors, adam kay and shruti acharya, who work in obstetrics and gynaecology ward for the nhs in the uk (told from adam's pov).
tw: mentions of suicide
first of all, i'd just like to say that this has made me appreciate healthcare workers even more—especially with all the high-stress situations they have to experience. i actually felt sick watching this, even though i myself wouldn't be able to verify how accurate it is to real life.
throughout the show, you see the mental, physical, and emotional effects of their jobs on their lives and the lack of support they receive from the system itself—although written in a dry satirical tone. everybody is overworked, yet underpaid and barely sleeps. its frank representation of it was an eye-opener for me. it actually made me viscerally sob and made my stomach feel like it was twisting. adam is written as a sarcastic, blunt, and lowk passive-aggressive being, whereas shruti is just this clumsy, overwhelmed new junior who's trying to get on top of things. most, if not every, one of their interactions ends with adam reprimanding or shouting at her. i kinda get his behaviour, but i don't support it either. like, if there was a junior who constantly needed help, i'd get annoyed—but it's MY job to teach them to help them. also, from shruti's pov, i'd also be doing the same thing. imagine just coming to this hospital, and there's nobody to help except this dude who literally always sounds fed up with you. like i wouldn't just do nothing, but i wouldn't keep up with his behaviour either. anyways, this just bruises their relationship badly and makes them see each other as nothing but nuisances (at least from adam's POV). from then on, multiple times, the protagonists break the fourth wall and narrate for themselves—and usually, it's adam making snarky replies or complaints. however, the last words shruti said to the camera were, "i'm sorry, i really did try." that line felt like a shot through my heart. it was right after she had finished a difficult night shift, right after she had passed her exams; she was going to celebrate with adam, too. moments later, she committed suicide. only then did everyone commemorate her. only then did adam finally appreciate her. i really sympathised with her, even though she wasn't the main character. what hurts me more is that she was supposed to represent other healthcare workers who take their lives, too.
overall, this show was extremely stressful to watch and get through. unless you're into dry, dead-pan humour and realistic settings (or looking for a good cry), i would not recommend this as a daily show to watch.
