This is kinda light on the whump side, but imagine a robot whumpee cowering in fear of a harsh storm outside. Not necessarily because they’re scared of getting wet; they may be waterproof. But they’re still a person, and anyone can be scared of thunder and lightening… Especially if getting hit by that lightening could mean their body reacting badly enough to fully destroy their AI (effectively killing them). Storms are not a fun time for the robot, as can be evidenced by them shaking in a corner as the storm rages outside.
… Now if only the humans around them could be a little more compassionate and stop teasing them about “getting rusty from a little rain.”

Whumpee waking up from a nightmare and lashing out at the hands that have grabbed them. Adrenaline crashing in as they kick and scratch and shove, forcing what they think is the whumper onto the floor. Pinning them by the throat and drawing back their fist. It’s fight or flight and they chose fight, until…their eyes adjust to the dark and they see Caretaker staring up at them, tears filling their eyes as they choke in a small voice, “It’s me.”

Robot whump!
- Whumper asking Caretaker what they'd do to get a specific part they need to repair Whumpee.
- The Team entering Whumper's lair, ready to get their android back. "FriEnds..." they hear, above them. And they look up and they see Whumpee, maybe not entirely whole, dangling by the neck on a noose. "TurN... Back..."
- Caretaker repairing the android. "You are crying," it says. Caretaker continues working and just nods. "...Why?"
- Whumper hacking the android and reprogramming it, marking its own team members as 'enemies'. Then sending it back :3
- Whumpee overheating trying to help their team to escape.
- Android Whumpee 'hiding' 'injuries': turning off its warnings. "What's that red light?" Caretaker might ask. And Whumpee just turns it off going all, "Probably an error."
- Whumper being all callous, going, "fuck, just get another android. They're replaceable for a reason!" And Caretaker going Apeshit™

Attention Whump Community!
Clogging disability tags is a massive problem that we need to address. Many tags, especially those surrounding permanent injuries, paralysis, vision loss and certain illnesses have become unusable due to being flooded with unrelated things. Yes, that includes your writing. Those tags are not for you. It's isolating, frustrating and depressing to try finding a community and other people who share your issues but all that comes up is whump, fandom shit, gifs, headcanons, etc.
I'm newly paralyzed. I have looked at many tags surrounding paralysis, trying to find support, a community, anything of people struggling with the same thing. Nothing. There's barely anything for us in the general disabilty tags. I am BEGGING you to understand and recognize how AWFUL it is.
So, I have a proposition. A tag you can and should use exclusively for disability content in whump writing. Not any other tag surrounding disability, lest you'll clog it up.
#disabled whumpee
It's tempting to use more specific tags, I get it. Due to being in the whump community myself I know #medical whump is already a tag. You have those tags. Use them. Don't use the disability tags. Don't clog up the few spaces us disabled people have.

Thinking about small hints that whumpee isn’t “fine”:
- That small grimace when they move the wrong way and aggravate an injury they were trying to hide (also, that hiss of pain through clenched teeth)
- Cautious movements, a split second of hesitancy and/or changes in posture
- Faux-casually leaning on the wall because they’re too exhausted/weak/dizzy to stand properly
- Talkative whumpees getting quiet and quiet whumpees talking too much
- Nervous laughter, fidgeting and shakiness
- When they try to keep their voice steady but it still sounds off
- Rubbing their temples/forehead and closing their eyes (or better, squeezing them shut)
- Tiny beads of sweat
- Abruptly leaving the room (not subtle but I love it, especially when [B] follows to see what’s wrong)
- Making excuses not to do something they usually do (or alternatively, trying extra hard in order to prove they’re ok)
- Zoning out mid conversation
- An indescribable something seems… off about them today

Put your nonhuman whumpee out in the cold today!
Currently thinking about a whumpee who is a different species from the rest of their team, and whumpee’s species happens to be extremely sensitive to cold. Bonus point if the team doesn’t know this and whumpee doesn’t tell them because they don’t want to be annoying.
For whatever reason, everyone has to spend a long time outside in winter. Maybe they’re traveling through a snowy landscape.
Whumpee is falling behind. They can’t stop shivering. Their hands and feet have gone numb. The rest of the team treks on, unaware and unbothered, and whumpee refuses to become a burden on them by complaining about a little cold.
So of course, no one notices that whumpee is doing Bad until they’ve collapsed in the snow.
“Whumpee! Hold up everyone! Hey, what happened? Whumpee? Can you hear me? Healer, get over here!”
Cue a frantic rush to get them inside or by a fire before the cold finishes them for good.
(Thanks @whumperofworlds for making me think about hypothermia today)

B has been feeling a little weird all day. A little shivery, a little tired, a little achey, starting to get sniffly, but overall okay. They don’t feel sick per se, just a little off.
Cut to B having a little movie night with their partner A, who is cradling B’s head in their lap. A is carding softly through their hair as they feel B’s breathing start to grow deeper and slower. They smile and move their fingers down towards B’s eyes, only to brush their forehead and stop. Is it just them, or is B feeling a little warm? They move their hand to B’s cheek, their other cupping the nape of their neck.
“You feeling okay? You feel really warm,” A asked, feeling B roll a little bit in their lap.
B mumbled something before burying their hot face deeper into the blankets and sniffling liquidly.
“Aw honey, let me get you some Tylenol so you can get some rest.”

I love Gamzee being way more present n it scares the shit out of his friends.😯Like he comes down from his sopor high n is nursing a migraine while all this drama is happening around him
The weird looks🤨he gets when someoen tries to talk to him n he waves them off saying that he's not in the mood and doesnt have the energy for talking rn, getting snappy n irritated.
Eridan ranting abt how they should all just give up and join Jack🐺and Gamzee's like "Motherfucker- If you really wanna get yo wicked on and kill all your homies, how about you do me a fucking favor and start with me? Can't stand this shit."💀
Karkat screaming nearby about all the junk people leave on the floor n Gamzee's getting a headache like💢😠 "Ay man, would you kindly do a brother a favor and SHUT IT THE FUCK UP? DAMN. Got a brother's pan RINGING. How the fuck you JUST woke up and already poppin off at the mouth with that motherfucking RACKET. Killin my head man, killin me. Shit..." 😒
and then he just storms off to a quieter part of the meteor with evry1 vry confused n concerned like😬
Seek The Highblood is just Equius walking in on Gamzee fully clothed in the shower running cold water🚿 trying not to vomit🤢Evry1 slowly becoming more n more concerned with the clown who seems to be fucking dying🙁Sollux giving tips on how to better deal with intense migraines, Equius n Nepeta demanding that he lay down and drink some water 🥤. Can barely keep down solid foods after living on a diet of slime, soda and chips.

“you’re safe now.”
“you can rest now.”
“you’ve fought so hard.”
“you don’t have to fight anymore.”
“just sleep, okay?”
“i won’t let anything hurt you.”
“it’s over. it’s all over.”
“you don’t have to worry about anything right now.”
“shh, shh, i’ve got you. you’re safe here.”
“i know it was scary.”
“i know it hurts.”
“you’re all done hurting. there’s no more pain.”
“just focus on resting, okay?”
“you need to save your strength.”
“your job right now is to heal.”
“i’m getting you out of here.”
“i’m taking you home. we’re going home.”
“you’re safe in my arms. the hard part is over.”

🖤 Whumpee Looking…Not Okay 🖤
There’s a distinctive moment at which Caretaker realizes something is wrong. Maybe something gives it away. Like…
Staring at nothing.
A nervous habit, like tapping a finger or biting a nail.
Breathing too fast.
Not breathing.
Talking just a little bit too loudly.
Not talking, all day.
Refusing food.
Visibly tired. Eye bags.
Dead eyes.
Eyes slightly widening at the sight of a trigger.
That very small shudder.
Gripping things. Chairs. Railings. Sinks.
Going suddenly pale.
Excusing themself to be alone.
“You’ve been quiet all day. Please talk to me.”
A tear escaping despite their best efforts.
The moment of realization. The way Caretaker’s heart just drops.

love a fictional character who will scowl and tell people “I’m not sick” “I’m not hungry” “I didn’t get injured”
meanwhile he has an extremely high fever, he ate some soup last week, and the blood is soaking through his jacket

HOW TO WRITE A CHARACTER WHO IS IN PAIN
first thing you might want to consider: is the pain mental or physical?
if it’s physical, what type of pain is it causing? — sharp pain, white-hot pain, acute pain, dull ache, throbbing pain, chronic pain, neuropathic pain (typically caused by nerve damage), etc
if it’s mental, what is the reason your character is in pain? — grief, heartbreak, betrayal, anger, hopelessness, fear and anxiety, etc
because your character will react differently to different types of pain
PHYSICAL PAIN
sharp and white-hot pain may cause a character to grit their teeth, scream, moan, twist their body. their skin may appear pale, eyes red-rimmed and sunken with layers of sweat covering their forehead. they may have tears in their eyes (and the tears may feel hot), but they don’t necessarily have to always be crying.
acute pain may be similar to sharp and white-hot pain; acute pain is sudden and urgent and often comes without a warning, so your character may experience a hitched breathing where they suddenly stop what they’re doing and clench their hand at the spot where it hurts with widened eyes and open mouth (like they’re gasping for air).
dull ache and throbbing pain can result in your character wanting to lay down and close their eyes. if it’s a headache, they may ask for the lights to be turned off and they may be less responsive, in the sense that they’d rather not engage in any activity or conversation and they’d rather be left alone. they may make a soft whimper from their throat from time to time, depends on their personality (if they don’t mind others seeing their discomfort, they may whimper. but if your character doesn’t like anyone seeing them in a not-so-strong state, chances are they won’t make any sound, they might even pretend like they’re fine by continuing with their normal routine, and they may or may not end up throwing up or fainting).
if your character experience chronic pain, their pain will not go away (unlike any other illnesses or injuries where the pain stops after the person is healed) so they can feel all these types of sharp pain shooting through their body. there can also be soreness and stiffness around some specific spots, and it will affect their life. so your character will be lucky if they have caretakers in their life. but are they stubborn? do they accept help from others or do they like to pretend like they’re fine in front of everybody until their body can’t take it anymore and so they can no longer pretend?
neuropathic pain or nerve pain will have your character feeling these senses of burning, shooting and stabbing sensation, and the pain can come very suddenly and without any warning — think of it as an electric shock that causes through your character’s body all of a sudden. your character may yelp or gasp in shock, how they react may vary depends on the severity of the pain and how long it lasts.
EMOTIONAL PAIN
grief can make your character shut themself off from their friends and the world in general. or they can also lash out at anyone who tries to comfort them. (five states of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and eventual acceptance.)
heartbreak — your character might want to lock themself in a room, anywhere where they are unseen. or they may want to pretend that everything’s fine, that they’re not hurt. until they break down.
betrayal can leave a character with confusion, the feelings of ‘what went wrong?’, so it’s understandable if your character blames themself at first, that maybe it’s their fault because they’ve somehow done something wrong somewhere that caused the other character to betray them. what comes after confusion may be anger. your character can be angry at the person who betrayed them and at themself, after they think they’ve done something wrong that resulted in them being betrayed, they may also be angry at themself next for ‘falling’ for the lies and for ‘being fooled’. so yes, betrayal can leave your character with the hatred that’s directed towards the character who betrayed them and themself. whether or not your character can ‘move on and forgive’ is up to you.
there are several ways a character can react to anger; they can simply lash out, break things, scream and yell, or they can also go complete silent. no shouting, no thrashing the place. they can sit alone in silence and they may cry. anger does make people cry. it mostly won’t be anything like ‘ugly sobbing’ but your character’s eyes can be bloodshot, red-rimmed and there will be tears, only that there won’t be any sobbing in most cases.
hopelessness can be a very valid reason for it, if you want your character to do something reckless or stupid. most people will do anything if they’re desperate enough. so if you want your character to run into a burning building, jump in front of a bullet, or confess their love to their archenemy in front of all their friends, hopelessness is always a valid reason. there’s no ‘out of character’ if they are hopeless and are desperate enough.
fear and anxiety. your character may be trembling, their hands may be shaky. they may lose their appetite. they may be sweaty and/or bouncing their feet. they may have a panic attack if it’s severe enough.
and I think that’s it for now! feel free to add anything I may have forgotten to mention here!
