Caretaker dotes over their favored whumpee. They cry when they cry and they're happy when they're happy.
Except when whumpee's physically injured. Caretaker turns into a personal stoic doctor who'll do even the worst operation imaginable, whatever it takes to keep them alive, calm through the entire thing.
-Once it's over, then they panic.

Stoic Caretaker forcing sleep-deprived and sick Whumpee to get some sleep.
"Mm . . . no. Caretaker m'fine. I have work I need to do-"
"If you don't take a god damn nap, I'm going to shove a bottle of Nyquil down your throat."

Stoic Caretaker and Sunshine Whumpee. Stoic Caretaker seeing Sunshine Whumpee's spirit breaking, watching the spark in their eyes fade. Stoic Caretaker gradually letting down more and more of their walls, because if they can be open and gentle with Whumpee, maybe Whumpee will know it's okay to be low and vulnerable with them in return until it gets better ❤️

cw: non-graphic gore, caretaker whump, stoic caretaker
the whumpee is already in horrible pain, but to relieve them or save them, the team has to do something even more painful. I'm talking dislocating a joint to get out of restraints, pouring antiseptic in a huge wound, pull glass shards or bullets out of their flesh, stitch them up without anesthetics, you name it.
the team sort of counts on the stoic member to take care of it and they do step up to go through with it, but their entire body tenses up even more the mere moment they kneel down to the whumpee. the exhausted, sobbing whumpee, who is already laying on the cold ground, almost unconscious but awake enough to feel everything. they're eyeing the teammate with sheer terror in their eyes, and if looks could talk, it'd be begging the teammate to just not do the thing that they're about to do, not now, they wouldn't be able to take it.
teammate grabs the tool needed for the procedure and lays their now trembling hand on the skin near whumpee's wound, preparing both of them for what's about to happen. they feel their breath get faster and every sound going distant for being overpowered by their own racing heartbeat. everyone watches them, losing precious seconds.
"jesus fuck," teammate suddenly drops the tool and leans back as if something startled them. "i can't do this. i'm so sorry, i-.. i can't do it. please."

Prompt
Whumpee, who has night terrors, has never had anyone to comfort them. When they meet Caretaker, a gruff and stoic person, they don't want them to think they're a burden, so they try to stay awake using caffeine and distractions.
After they get injured in some sort of altercation, they fall asleep out of physical exhaustion on Caretaker's couch. They wake up screaming, startling Caretaker.
Caretaker's soft side begins to shine through as Whumpee apologizes, much to Caretaker's confusion.

Stoic and gruff Caretaker who is forced to take in innocent and naive Whumpee by forces beyond their control. It takes them a while to warm up to each other, but what really breaks the tension is when Whumper comes back, and Caretaker realizes they have to put their differences aside to keep Whumpee safe.
Feel free to add onto any of my prompts!

Hi, it's me again :3
First of, I just wanted to say that I've loved whump for a while, and you're the first person I read whump from, so just--thank you for whumping all this time :)
For my ask: Could I get a stoic whumpee and a near-emotionless caretaker who is under oath to protect whumpee? Caretaker is well trained is survival, such as building a fire, and perhaps when they see whumpee shivering, caretaker tells whumpee that they'll make them a fire. Said whumpee feels challenged, so they tell caretaker that they'll do it themselves. I just like Whumpee being unable to do it, and, even though they're getting really frustrated, they keep trying--
And eventually caretaker has do it for them.
Hello! Ahh, thank you so much for your kind words <3
Sorry to be this late, I hope you like it!
--------------------------------------------------------
Deep in the heart of a dense forest, Caretaker and Whumpee found themselves in the midst of a long journey. Caretaker was an adventurer with a repertoire of survival skills, quite accustomed to undertake this kind of challenges. Moreover, Caretaker was used to be alone, as they weren’t the type to create bonds, so being in the middle of the forest with Whumpee wasn't exactly their cup of tea. But Caretaker just couldn't break the promise they made long ago, the promise to protect Whumpee at any cost.
Caretaker’s keen eyes scanned the surroundings, assessing the situation, as Whumpee struggled to keep up pace. Caretaker sighed, rolling their eyes. “Would you mind moving? It's getting dark out here.”
“I-I’m trying m-my best… I-I'm not a m-machine l-like you!” Whumpee replied snorting, their teeth chattering and their lips trembling.
Now, if it had been up to Caretaker they would have continued walking all night, the sleep and cold certainly weren’t a problem for Caretaker. But for Whumpee…
Upon noticing Whumpee's shivering form, Caretaker broke the silence that had settled between them. “Alright, we’ll stop for now. I'll make you a fire,” Caretaker declared with confidence, their hands deftly collecting dry leaves, twigs, and branches.
However, Whumpee, prideful and perhaps feeling a bit challenged, responded with determination, “I-I can do it m-myself. I-I don't n-need your he-help.” Ignoring the chill that seeped into their bones, Whumpee began fumbling with the gathered materials, attempting to emulate Caretaker's expertise.
Caretaker watched patiently, a small smile playing on their lips as Whumpee struggled to spark a flame. “Look, you don't have to play mikado, you just have to light a fire...” Caretaker smirked.
Whumpee glared daggers at Caretaker and their frustration grew, but their determination remained unwavering. They had to prove themselves, to show that they were not entirely dependent on Caretaker's skills. “I can do this,” they muttered through gritted teeth, refusing to admit defeat.
Time went by and despite their best efforts, Whumpee's attempts were futile, they were getting so cold that their hands were losing feeling and they were even unable to hold the wooden sticks.
“Ah come on! Give me that!” Caretaker, sensing Whumpee's struggle, finally intervened, their experienced hands swiftly turning the scattered elements into a roaring fire.
Whumpee, a mix of relief and embarrassment etched on their face, stared at the flames flickering in the darkness. “I could have done it,” they muttered defensively.
“Yeah, sure thing…” Caretaker growled, shaking their head and sitting in front of the fire beside Whumpee.
As the warmth from the fire enveloped them, the tension between Caretaker and Whumpee dissipated. Together, they sat by the dancing glow of the flames, a silent understanding forming between the two.

A whumpee who’s too stubborn to accept help during their recovery. They insist on acting like nothing happened, ignoring their doctor’s advice and pushing through the pain. Their face is scrunched up in pained concentration throughout the day as they go about their business, and any offers of assistance are met with a snapped “I’m fine,” and a glare.
And the caretaker who knows Whumpee won't listen to reason, and so they do not try. Not out of spite or anger at Whumpee’s pridefulness, but out of understanding. Understanding that Whumpee’s pride is just as injured as their body, and that offering help now will only worsen the issue. And so they wait, lingering outside of Whumpee’s personal space, watching them struggle and swallowing the desire to intervene.
When Whumpee’s body inevitably fails them, Caretaker is there. Whumpee’s anger and shame is clear on their face, and Caretaker knows that scolding Whumpee would only worsen their pain. When Caretaker approaches, Whumpee looks away, shaking.
"It's fine if you need help," Caretaker says as they effortlessly lift the collapsed Whumpee into their arms. Whumpee doesn't resist, nor do they speak. They simply bury their face into Caretaker’s chest, one arm draped over Caretaker’s shoulder. Caretaker can feel their shirt becoming wet with tears, but Whumpee stubbornly refuses to make a sound.
"Let me help you," Caretaker whispers, carrying Whumpee to bed.

Cold Leader glanced over at Whumpee, analyzing their stern face for a only a second, before promptly deciding to ignore it. The two have pressed onwards hundreds of times in the past. They did so tirelessly; little breaks, mainly stops in order to scavenge, pauses to get the job done.
In the past, Whumpee's tired breathing bothered Leader in a different way. It was annoying how tired they got, how machine-like but still needy they were, how despite their obvious non-humanness they still acted so.
Today Whumpee's heavy breathing was bothering them in a different way. With every step the two took Leader leaned more and more into the idea of giving them a break. I mean they couldn't run Whumpee forever. Everything needed to rest, including Leader.
"Let's stop here." The words felt foreign and strained coming out of Leader's mouth.
Whumpee stared at Leader like they were looking at a dying dog that just begun to limp. However they resigned to the idea when they realized the seriousness that was in Leader's face. The two plopped down right on the spot. An uncontrollable sigh of relief from released from Whumpee when they sat, hissing through their teeth, and squeezing from their muscles in a stretch.
Leader simply rolled their eye at the notion, however they couldn't stop glancing back. They've been noticing a lot more lately. A whole lot more. Whumpee's tired eye bags, sometimes their feet hurts so much they limp. For as long as they've done this work together Leader needs to start treating them like so. Today Whumpee was a bit more beyond tired so that meant, Leader couldn't remember when either slept.
Before Whumpee even got a chance to begin laying out the night's camping equipment, Leader snatched it from their hands.
"I'll do it tonight." They droned.
On missions the two never really had much for "camping", Before Leader knew it they were offering Whumpee more than they offered most.
"I'll take night shift." They commanded, shoving a thin scraggly blanket into Whumpee's hands. Whumpee quietly nodded their head. Leader was Leader. Who were they to ever question? Ever.
Leader spotted the twitching in Whumpee's face. Whumpee probably thought that Leader has finally gone mad. Scanning the environment Leader thought over their journey. They needed to treat their "friends" better. Neither could go back to being experiments in that lab after all.
Whumpee fell asleep immediately, slumping against Leader. They half-awoke sensing they messed up and needed to move, or apologize or something. Leader's warm hands cautiously wrapped themselves around Whumpee.
Leader hushed, "Don't move. You need the rest."
Whumpee looked almost scared, but most definitely listened, relaxing onto Leader. The warm hands carded through their hair, messaging their shoulders. They made sure to sooth the base of Whumpee's wings, and press gently against where they assumed they last enemy tried to kill them. Neither ever realized how warm the other was.
Leader knew instantly they'd do this a million times over, however long the journey needed out of the two of them.
"You deserve better than me, Whumpee."
Whumpee sighed to that, before meekly answering, "Us nonhumans need to stick together."
"You're right."

when whumpee was in captivity, whumper would act overly sweet and intimate to them before pulling the rug from under their feet and hurting them
now whumpee's with caretaker -- a callous and standoffish prick who's infamous for keeping to themselves. caretaker inwardly feels bad that whumpee ended up with them, but the contrast between whumpee's captor and savior helps differentiate them so whumpee naturally associates them with safety. whumpee comes to trust caretaker faster than anyone ever has in caretaker's life and they're very confused

No one in caretaker’s life has ever been safe.
Simple association paints a target on their back; and when whumpee came into their life, caretaker held them at arms length as far as possible.
This only left whumpee confused. Trying desperately to either win their approval or understand what could be ever wrong with them that keeps caretaker away.

Consider this:
Caretaker getting tortured, but keeping a strong face. They refused to talk. They refused to give up info to their captors. They are stoic as all hell.
But the moment their captors turned to hurt Whumpee?
Screams and threats towards their lives, maybe even pleading to them to hurt them instead. They'll do anything to keep Whumpee from getting hurt.
Not on Caretaker's watch.

(W:) "It hurts" (C:) "That means it works. It will be over soon, I need you to stay patient for me"
(C:) "Did you do this on purpose?" (W:) "N-no, you know me! You know I would never-!" (C:) "Then why do you apologise so much for an accident? No one is upset with you, and certainly not me"
Whumpee slaps Caretaker's hand away during the treatment of the wound. (C:) "Listen, I know you are irritated and tired. I know it hurts, but I have to end to suture this, so it doesn't get infected. Do something for me and hold on the bedframe instead. I promise to make it quick."
Caretaker ends the argument of the Teammates by: "Let's stop arguing about who've done wrong and start to plan what we can do to make it right".
(T:) "But they said-" (C:) "They are in shock. What they want now is not good for their health."
(C:) "I know it's scary, but we have everything under control. Breathe deeply and trust me. Yes, like that. You are very brave, good job. It will be okay."

Stoic Caretaker having to call Whumpee’s family and tell them to come from far away because Whumpee is in critical condition. Quietly bearing the brunt of the family blaming them for not protecting Whumpee as they should have. Eventually, when the shouting’s over and everybody’s giving them the silent treatment, slipping away into a dark, empty room so they can break down in privacy.

Burns+Scars x Defiant Whumpee
Based on my last two polls, this is what we've got! TW: Swearing
Caretaker dreamt of Whumpee at night. The witty comebacks to any insult hurled their way, the constant sarcasm, the flirty attitude towards them... They were the fiesty fire to their calm waters, the ray of sunshine that brightened their life. God, Caretaker lived them.
As Caretaker made their way down the hall, they could still see Whumpee as they lifted the debris from the explosion off them, the way they ignored the pain of the fire eating away at their hands for them. Caretaker needed to save them, if only to thank them. If only to tell them how they felt...
They opened the door to the cell, eyes immediately drawn to where Whumpee sat in the corner, head buried in their knees. "Whumper, I told you, if you touch me again, I swear to fucking God, I will break your fucking hand and shove it up your ass."
Caretaker smiled weakly. "Whumpee, it's me."
Whumpee lifted their head, a blindfold covering most of their face. They smiled, a fresh cut still bleeding on their bottom lip. "Caretaker, you're okay!"
Caretaker laughed. "Yeah, thanks to you and Medic. I still can't believe that was all so Whumper could get their hands on you."
Whumpee held up their cuffed wrists. "You got a key?"
"A lockpick." Caretaker headed over to Whumpee, crouching before them. They fussed with the lock, sighing as the cuffs fell to the ground. Whumpee held their irritated wrist in their hand as Caretaker pulled the blindfol from their face...
Whumpee's smile faded. "Caretaker, what's wrong?"
Fresh scars crossed over one another, probably from some sort of acid from the looks of it. Whumpee's eyes stared blankly in front of them, even as Whumpee cocked their head to the side. "Caretaker, did you take the blindfold off yet? What's wrong? You're being awfully quiet, even for you."
Caretaker struggled for words. "Whumpee, I took the blindfold off already."
