SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT TESSA GRAY IN CHAIN OF GOLD:

just finished chain of gold and it was really good. i love all the new characters, the plot was great, the romance is spectacular. the book really just kept me up, y’all. i really enjoyed it.

but...BUT. i had to stop every 20 pages or so because i was SO ANGRY at cassie’s treatment of tessa gray. and righteously so. while reading the book, i hardly recognized tessa. she was...reduced to a housewife. a pretty little thing who hosts parties, decorates the house, worries after her children and adores her husband...that’s about it. hardly a mention save a few of her past heroics. narry a line about her personality or her little character quirks from the infernal devices, but of course we couldn’t go 20 pages without reading a line about will’s fear of ducks or love of books or boyish charm or his herondale bloodline and herondale this and herondale THAT! i love the herondales, i love them, but my god, if i’m not damn sick and tired of the herondales shining at the expense of every other character, particularly the female characters. in this case, james and lucie’s whole fucking predicament in this book revolves around the blood of their prince of hell grandfather that they got from their mother, the one and only tessa gray! so why the fuck did they never talk to her about it??? why didn’t we get a private conversation between mother and son? mother and daughter? why did will get to express anguish over his kids’ problems but tessa didn’t? like yeah, tessa now knows who her father is!! and you’re telling me all she does is nod and accept the fact??? bullshit. and why did we have to hear information about tessa from other characters like jem and will?? SHE IS STILL ALIVE!!! SHE CAN SPEAK FOR HERSELF!!! i understand that tessa is a supporting character because she, like will and jem and all the other tid characters, are parents now, but shit, why did tessa get the shortest end of the stick in terms of lines and narrative space and acknowledgement when she was the goddamn PROTAGONIST of tid??? not even a private scene between just tessa and cordelia? even tessa’s own children don’t think about or mention her as much as they do of will and jem. jem...who isn’t even their actual uncle!! i love jem but goddamn it!! i’m so frustrated!!! i get that this book and trilogy is set in the early 1900s edwardian britain era, when women are marginalized and sexism is rampant, but that doesn’t mean you as an author should marginalize one of the most iconic female characters of the shadowhunter chronicles within the actual story, stripping her of a potential legacy, narrative importance, agency and any hint of personality. did tessa have a personality in this book besides being practical, worries, and motherly? did she? DID SHE? tessa gray in chain of gold is NOT the same character as tessa gray in the infernal devices. and don’t say, she’s changed! of course she’s not the same character. y’all know EXACTLY what i mean. this same shit happened to clary in the dark artifices. i’m tired y’all.
