Holy shit, y'all. It's been a full 20 years since I started making these year-end mixtapes. Two whole decades of building strings of musical gems: the songs that made me happiest, that moved me to dance, that made each day a little better than the one before.

I'm not gonna lie; this has been a really difficult year, but there was also so much good music in it. There's a metaphor in there somewhere. Something something creativity in the face of despair. Isn't that how we fight the darkness, ultimately? By creating, sharing, listening, curating, sending?

2022 FLUXBLOG SURVEY || TOMORROW IS ALREADY HERE

 I’ve been making “survey” playlists every year for a long time now, and this is one of the more interesting versions of the idea as it’s basically a document of music culture at a transitional moment as Gen Z artists and aesthetics are gaining traction while Millennial artists and culture remain dominant. I’m curious to see how the next few years play out – will there be a clear tipping point in the next two years similar to how Gen X fully asserted itself in 1993 and 1994, or will the sheer volume of Millennials stifle this progress and largely keep Gen Z culture in the margins? I think you can tell who I’m rooting for here.

As with all the surveys this is a playlist covering music across genres, and I think this is a particularly diverse set of songs. As a result it’s very, very long – slightly shorter than the 2021 iteration, but still over 900 songs. And of course there’s going to be things I left out or forgot for one reason or another, but there’s always a point where I just have to stop adding things. This could easily be 1800 songs, but I don’t think that would actually be useful to anyone.

Please share this with anyone you think would find it useful or interesting! Tell me if you found anything you loved in this – I’m always curious what might pop out to people, or how this got around someone’s blindspots.

I'm going to find it absolutely hilarious if my obstinate MP3 hoarding ways come back into vogue. Next we're going to develop ways to share our MP3s with others on our networks. And we'll invent Limewire all over again.

Spotify this morning (Monday 2/7/22) decided to make an additional statement that they’ll keep Joe Rogan on their platform because “silencing him” (apparently he literally physically is incapable of finding another platform? Has he checked Gab or wherever his cretin colleagues hang out now?) is not the answer. Apparently 20+ uses of a single racial slur over a decade of broadcasting, plus comparing Black people to apes, is the horse they want to back. 

I did say these guys were nefarious. 

I don’t use music streaming services and never have, but if anyone has a good, clear, comprehensive guide for those who do, which discusses how to get off spotify and what the alternatives are, I invite you to drop a link in comments and I will reblog. (To be clear I’m not looking for comments about this or single platform recommendations but for a pre-existing guide to which I can direct others, since my understanding of streamed music is incomplete.)

To commemorate the passing of 2018, I’ve put together my fifteenth annual collection of the songs that made me happiest, that moved me to dance, that made each day a little better than the one before.

Janelle Monáe - Tightrope ft Big Boi This track is something like eight years old, but I found it this year. As far as I’m concerned, Monáe is a national treasure.

Oh Land - White Nights (Max Tundra Remix) Also several years old, but I love the jangly Scandinavian electropop sound of this. (This remix is not available on Spotify or YouTube, so if you want the remix, you’ll need to download the MP3 version. The original isn’t quite as good IMHO.)

Chick Quest - Explain Yourself to a Bat There are several genres I feel compelled to hit with every mixtape. This is the shouty post-punk entry for the list.

BTS - Not Today (Japanese Version) I’m starting to think that K-pop might have to have a place in the mandatory genre list, actually.

Skogsrå - Out Of Time But never fear, there’s plenty of Swedish beats to go around.

Japandroids - Arc Of Bar Japandroids. Neither from Japan, or androids. They’re Canadian, and one of them is named David Prowse, which is the same name as the man who was inside the Darth Vader suit. (Coincidence?? I THINK NOT.)

Janelle Monáe - Make Me Feel I told myself I wasn’t going put two Janelle Monáe tracks on the list. But then I found out that she was collaborating with Prince on this album before he died, so really this is basically a Prince track. Move along. (If you haven’t seen the 45-minute short film that accompanied this album, it’s worth a watch.)

St. Vincent - Masseduction Every time this came on in the car this year, I looked at it fiercely to try to burn the metadata into my brain so I’d remember to add it to the mixtape. (Hooray! It worked!)

Darwin Deez - The World’s Best Kisser A layer cake of vocoder-driven harmonies power this sweet little love song.

The Decemberists - Once In My Life 2018 had its peaks, but plenty of valleys as well. This song helped lift me out of said valleys by sinking my frustrations into its chorded swells.

Fall Out Boy - Young and Menace Seguing out of twee hipsterland into mainstream alt rock for a spell.

BROCKHAMPTON - JUNKY I listened to a lot of rap in 2018, but this one kept yanking me back to listen again and again.

cupcakKe - Cartoons I love the found-things rhythmic percussion in the background and the lightning-fast spat rhymes, as well as the catchy lyrics in the chorus. Plus, she rhymes “Where’s Waldo” with “Johnny Bravo.”

Swet Shop Boys - Birding This rap trio features British actor Riz Ahmed, better known as the defector Imperial pilot from Star Wars: Rogue One. It’s also the only rap song I’ve heard that rhymes “you need a manager” with “flame-colored tanager”.

Childish Gambino - This Is America Explicit This song (and the music video) encapsulated so much of the cultural rage that spun throughout 2018.

The Books - Beautiful People And now, for a wee dive back into twee hipster alternafolk.

Lee Ranaldo - Moroccan Mountains I find this droning, Mumford-n-Sons-meets-tanpura vibe to be oddly soothing.

Oh Wonder - All We Do Ticking off the ‘sad vocals with samples and a piano’ genre box….

Oneohtrix Point Never feat. Iggy Pop - The Pure and the Damned This song came on in the car a few weeks before my aerial studio’s grand opening. It reached in, grabbed my heartstrings, and yanked until I paid attention. I performed this song as trapeze solo at the grand opening as tribute to all the heartache that passed before we were able to come together here.

The HU - Wolf Totem My friend Ruby introduced me to Tuvan throat singing in general and this Tuvan throat rock track in particular.

Lorde - Green Light There’s something just so joyous about the way this track is shaped. Don’t be surprised if I perform to this at some point.

Andrew W.K. - You’re Not Alone I have an irrational fondness for Andrew W.K. His relentless positivity and efforts towards addressing mental health issues are inspiring, but I also just think his music is super fun.

Bonus track #1 comes to us from a lesbian Viking metal band, which is my new favorite conglomeration of adjectives.

Bonus track #2 is a delightfully bizarre music video that I turned into a choreographed warmup for my aerial classes. Good luck getting it out of your head. ;)
