Allie--23--CT/NY Elementary school teacher by day. Tea-drinking, animal-crazed, book-loving, baking-obsessed, Netflix-binging weirdo by night. You may be wondering, what is this weird, cheesy, hippie blog all about? Here's my longwinded explanation... I have always been a bit of a nerd for New Years resolutions (maybe introducing myself as a nerd is not the best way to attract you to this blog here, but let’s be honest, there's an inner nerd in all of us--embrace it). So, in 2010, as part of my New Years resolution, I began what I like to call my “Gratitude Journal”. Back then, I was an unhappy, naive college freshman, feeling lonely and particularly negative towards the world around me. My problems with anxiety were at their peak, my energy was low, and I felt incredibly down most days. What helped me to get out of that rut was recording in a notebook the everyday things that I was grateful for, on a day to day basis, no matter how big or small those things were. This could mean an old friend I crossed paths with, a food I ate, a TV show I watched, the fact that I didn't fail so-and-so's test, or whatever else under the sun. The list grew, and gradually boosted my moods, helping me to realize just how important it is to notice the little things around me in order to live a happier life. I have kept five written gratitude journals since then, and In 2012, I decided to make my journaling public, in hopes that it may inspire others to live a life rooted in thankfulness. So, long story short, these are the people, places, things, experiences, and moments that I am most thankful for. Every day is different, but every day there is at least one thing (oftentimes many) to be grateful for. Your name may or may not appear on here, but I assure you that I am very thankful for YOU, whether you know me personally or you just happened to stumble upon the blog of this random stranger :) What are you grateful for today? ...From my other Tumblr.

I’ve been having another string of strange nights, in which I can’t pinpoint what exactly I’m feeling or what’s bothering me, but just that I am not satisfied. I truly love my students and everyone I teach with, I find myself laughing more often than not these days, and I’m fairly confident about what May 17th holds…but somehow these things aren’t enough, and I don’t know why. Flipping through old photo albums helped a little, so did blasting Sara Bareilles on my way to class (shut up, she rules), also having gorgeous snow covering my lawn, and wearing slipper socks 24/7. Revisiting my journals was the next step. Nothing has helped more than remembering this moment, since it has brought me back to one of the most enlightening, clarity-giving weeks of my life.
"…When I stood still in that one spot, everything around me seemed to come to life, and I suddenly became fully aware of all five of my senses; I began to notice the wind. It was brisk, comfortably chilly, rustling against the few shrubs that dotted the grounds, but above all else, it was refreshing, almost as if Mother Earth was breathing life directly into my skin. Since it was late evening, the sky and landscape were especially beautiful in soft hues of orange and pink, with the sun casting shadows on the dusty ground and providing for a particularly meditative greeting with this new land. After all of the time we had spent driving, it was quite soothing to have a quiet moment, free of any worries, fears, excitements, or emotions, whether internal or external. It may have been challenging to come to terms with it at first, but l knew that this was a moment to just BE. I opened my clenched fists, letting my palms take full impact of the breeze, stretching out each finger, and letting the wind filter through the gaps like a river current. Occasionally I would glance in the distance behind me or beside me and I’d catch myself smiling at the sight of one of my newfound sisters or brothers standing similarly, but interpreting the wind, their own wind, in a unique way, some with their eyes closed, some with wide eyes. It only lasted for about five minutes, but I swear I could have stood there for hours, frozen by the beauty around me. I’m not sure if it was the physical force of the breeze or the spiritual force of my God, but tears clouded my vision by the time we reconvened as a group. Even from miles away, beautiful Shiprock, in all its majesty, appeared so distinct and breathtaking that I didn’t yet feel completely worthy of standing before it in my naivety. When the time comes, I know it will be very hard to leave this land.”
That’s what I’ve been missing, that’s what I’ve been needing. A moment to just BE. What I wouldn’t give to be back there now, soaking in the silhouette of Shiprock against the backdrop of a wide-open western sunset. Embracing the wind, my wind.
The first and greatest lesson that I learned out in the breathtaking Navajo Nation last summer was that Mother Earth is forever the greatest source of power and life. We can protest all we want against Her, complain about Her snow, whine about Her wind, and shiver against Her cold, but Mother Earth still has the final say. I don’t care how ridiculous and hippie-like it may sound, but She deserves to be recognized and She deserves to be felt. Having a moment to pause and draw in a breath of Her life is what I’ve been missing these days.

NO EXCUSES but oh it has been a crazy semester
I know I desperately need to update this. Hopefully that will happen very soon when life slows down just a little bit and I can breathe for more than a millisecond. These past few months have presented a few struggles, and some triumphs, but at the end of each day, I know I am doing what I love: teaching. And that makes it all worth it.
Love to you and you and you and you.
